I have a 2021 RG550 Genesis in Purple Neon. Love it a lot! I took some shims from under the nut, and lowered the action, and now I have an action at 0,9mm. Kept the original V pickups, but lowered them at around 3.5mms and they sound amazing like this. Very very underrated guitar this...
I’ve discovered your channel this morning while waiting for the school run. I’m a few years older how were you into 80s rock in the late 90s. So far I love the Rickenbacker cos I’m a Beatles nut and the the one you built but I’m a retro soul boy if I had met you in 1999 I would have told you Ibanez are horrendous rock guitars but I do have a rather lovely Ibanez semi hollow these days as I’m a bit less judgemental
Thanks! I love my RG550 BECAUSE it’s a horrendous rock guitar! 🤣🤘🏻 Ibanez have made a lot of really interesting guitars over the years - I think they might be the most diverse of the guitar makers and they’re playing a blinder at the moment, that nylon string Tim Henson thing is getting loads of attention on You Tube.
Also wanted a RG550 as a kid. Almost got one when I was 12 but didn’t. So always wanted one. When I was an adult I bought a reissue. It was my dream guitar and color…I hated it. The neck was too thin and the locking tremolo didn’t work for my style.
So many players just don’t get on with the super thin wizard necks, I feel like they are designed very specifically to enable fast legato style playing and not everyone wants to do play like that!
@@johnoakleymusic It’s a good’un! I used to have some great Darkness shirts but they all got destroyed at gigs or just wore out from wearing them so much!
Hey Joanne. Firstly, that’s a beautiful guitar and even more special as it was given to you by your parents. I can understand your predicament and I agree that half the battle is finding a decent amp which you have done. Those guitars can be quite versatile so it may be a matter of tweaking your amp to suit and it will all come together. Happy playing from Australia 😊
Aw thank you, yes I’m very late to the party when it comes to amps and other gear but I’m starting to look into it now, am looking for an EQ pedal which I think will help!
That’s great. Enjoy the journey. Guitars are fascinating instruments and I’m always learning new things about them and what to play etc. a great way to pass the time 😊
@@thegaindane Are they expensive nowadays? I haven’t looked it up because I would never sell it, but it wasn’t very expensive when my Dad bought it for my 18th birthday but that was a LONG time ago! 😆
Thanks! I’ve struggled a bit with it over the years, just not really knowing what to do with it because I can’t ‘shred’ and I feel unsure of what to play on an instrument that was so clearly designed for a virtuoso player. Maybe now is the time to up my game and get some Satriani on!
I know the feeling...went thru a Paul Gilbert obsession and decided I MUST HAVE his signature Ibanez guitar. Found one on ebay, nice guitar and plays well...but those super-skinny Ibanez necks are just not for me and I'll never have the dedication, ability nor desire to be a shredder so the guitar has been in its case for a long time now 😆
It’s just a constant reminder of the shredder I will never be! 😭💔 BUT now I’m old and I don’t care whether I’ve got the ‘chops’ or whether I’m credible or whatever, I’m going to play this guitar anyway and enjoy it even if that means it has to suffer the indignity of me playing songs by The Darkness on it because that’s all I can do anymore 😆 What’s the Paul Gilbert model like? Bet it looks COOL 👌🏻
It's the PGM301 model, a fantastic looking guitar...white with painted f holes, 2 humbuckers and a single coil. It's the model with the fixed bridge which suits me as I'm not a fan of those floating dive bomb whammy bar set-ups. I should really get it out of the case and give it another go...just that super-skinny neck puts me off. Nothing wrong with the Darkness..Justin Hawkins is the bees knees!
@@david_v2.1 Haha, yes he's the man of my dreams - or he was for 20 years until I discovered Richie Kotzen...anyway...get that Ibanez out of the case and rock out!

@@vladzubac5360 It totally is! The most classic Ibanez guitar you can get, IMO

That’s a great guitar, and very desirable…. I would love to own a RG 550… but they are usually too pricy for me.

@ Well, a new one is about £800. And that’s more than I can afford 🙂
It might not be expensive to everybody.
@ Oof yeah that is pricey. It cost less than half that much in 1999! 😱
Nice guitar am sure you will enjoy it regardless
