I wish you had covered a bit more about they "why" of branding and how it helps us control theft, prevent spread of disease and monitor and control movement of livestock within the state in a way that ranchers and the state can afford. Also why being an open range state is important and how branding plays into that. As a brand inspector for the state of Montana I would bet at least half of my "trouble"/"complaint" calls in the past two years have come from blue state refugees moving into Montana and not understanding that a lot of the underlying reasons they like Montana have to do with how our laws regarding land use and livestock have shaped our state. They want to come in and change everything to be the way it was in the states they are leaving which got to the point they wanted to leave because they voted in laws and law makers who shaped their former states differently from ours. I can't tell you the amount of times I have had to explain "fence out" vs "fence in" to new folks complaining that cows are wrecking the scenery, yard, public land (that they want to enjoy but not let anyone else on now that they are here) etc. I think you did a good job explaining the "why" of vaccinations, worming and antibiotics though.

If they don’t like how Montanans do things they can move back to the crappy state they left. We don’t want people from “Blue” states moving to Texas. Why? Because they try to turn my beloved Texas into California. They move here and immediately try to tell us how to live. I’ve actually had blue staters come up and try to tell me what all wrong with Texas. My answer, go back where you came from,we don’t want you here and no one forced you to live or move here. Yes, they get offended. They just don’t get it. They didn’t get in California either.

I'm sure theres more that a few people who move to Montana not because they did'nt like anything about where they moved from but for the better views and recreation that Montana offers. Many dont give a thought to what the cattle ranchers or any other occupations are doing.

Theft? How does that excuse torture? Do cattle want to be forcibly immobilized and forced to receive a brand? How exactly is any of this beneficial to the animal well being? Many are going to be slaughtered anyway. The animal enters life totally controlled, the animal is punished if too difficult, the animal is forcibly subjugated so it can be harmed with hot iron, it exists a few years more eating food that is naturally unhealthy but makes the animal increase in mass, the animal is injected with steroids, the animal is then slaughtered. But y'all claim its humane. Get the hell out.
The Midwest is a cesspool low intelligence hillbilly small dick energy. F'ing hell. Just look at this guy.

Everything starts much earlier in the morning. Milking at 5am? Up at 3:30, eat something, get down in the pasture by 4-ish, get the cows up from being "frozen to the ground" in -40° weather and into the milking barn to be milked at 5. Then getthe cows back into the pasture, "clean" the barn, feed the cattle and then "rest" while you drive a tractor around all day. Then get the cows back up to the milking barn at 5pm, rinse and repeat.
That kid mentioned "White fish" (Mt) and that's where u worked on the dairy. That brings back memories.
I remember round-up time as a kid, after all the chaos, branding, cutting horns and getting "gut punched" by a frisky calf who thinks it can run right through you (i was a big kid, they didn't get by me) and 12-1 o'clock came around, it was chow time. There was always a big pot of the best baked beans you ever ate (not just because we were hungry), fesh biscuits, bacon, ham, etc., etc., and it was the best time ever. Kids today, especially urban kids, just will never understand or know what they're missing.

Long comment here but for the correct reasons. My Grandfather and his father were both Veterinarians. They both practiced small and large animal science from 1900 until they both passed with my Grandpa in 1990. My grandpa wanted to fight in WWII but was denied so he could be USDA inspector for food safety for the troops serving. In 1942 he found a large outbreak of Anthrax in Northern Alabama. The worst day of his career. He ordered 5000 head of cattle to be destroyed but it saved lives of our troops. The brands used were instrumental in making sure only cattle possibly infected were put down.
Later he again worked for the USDA in greater Peoria IL as an inspector for Cattle and Hogs. Starting at the age of 7 he would take me to area slaughter houses so I knew where my McDonalds hamburger and hot dog from Oscar Mayer came from. He loved animals but also understood that we as humans eat meat. I get that many hate that. His job was to make sure it is safe.
Trinity! I learned more from your videos as ranching goes in the past 3 weeks than I did in 59 years previously. My Grandpa and Great Grandpa would of been your friends. By the way? Road a horse 2 times in my life. Both were not good. Born and raised a city boy in Chicago after the fact. I appreciate your thoughtful concern for all of your subject matter! Keep Montana Beautiful!

Who among us would not take good care of our pets? Well, we would always take care of them. Vet checks, microchips, grooming, careful breeding to avoid physical deformities, all these things go into taking good care of fancy dogs and cats.
How about a vegetable garden? We'd want to put the best fertilizer and pest control into that garden so we'd have the best, tastiest veggies.
This is why they do what they do with these cattle. After generations of experience, years of research, and lots of care and compassion, these cattle are being taken care of in the most humane, efficient manner these cattle-people know.

It seems like several generations are removed from having an understanding of what is required for food to be ready for purchase at the grocery store, or be on a menu at a restaurant.
I worked on several ranches in New Mexico and Texas and always enjoyed branding season. Everyone called it “neighboring”, when they came to help us and we went to help them work cattle. It was a lot of fun and kind of like a big reunion.
Everyone was careful to work the cattle nice and easy, those cattle are the ranchers livelihood and if you handled them roughly you wouldn’t get any help the next year at your branding, nor be I invited back to anyone else’s.

They do a feed through of medicated feed early with poultry to help increase size quickly. However, there is a Hold Over period for any consumable animal that has been given antibiotics. So the Poultry folks do it early to get them big. Now with hogs and cattle the Last thing we want is a sick animal. The cost of the antibiotics, the time taken managing their care and the Hold Over period means money out of our pocket. We can get Hogs and Cattle to grow better by giving them better nutrition and appropriate vitamins and parasite control.

This is very informative. Thank you. Both my grandparent sets had some acres in Oklahoma. I spent 6 years of my life on the Tilbury's. They had just shy of 160 acres. They wanted it to be essentially a Wilde nature filled space for their family to enjoy. There were hills, gullies, a pond, and bottom land. You could find rose rocks, arrow heads, and trees you could climb. The water was well water and the best tasting stuf! There were paper shell and Native pecans. They were growing all over the bottom land, some were 100 years old. There were also Wilde plums, Possum grapes, black walnut, and persimmon trees. There was so much I wanted to do with that property. It wasn't in the stars. I love it here in Montana just the way it is. Housing could be more affordable is my only complaint, obviously Not the fault of the locals here.

Same, I got to live in a nature oasis fo a while, but not ranching. I have been very curious. My health won't let me try it now.

I like how you showed the “community” of coming together to get the big jobs done. I am so grateful for men and women who work so hard to keep us fed. Ranchers and farmers are often very misunderstood! Thanks for you view into this world. So many are so far from the food source and have little understanding of the how and why things are done.

I’ve read through some comments and ppl are just stupid. This isn’t Cruelty to animals. Most ppl live in the city or town and the way the tie up their dogs and cats and birds is animal cruelty

Yeah. Dogs are born to run at great lengths. Not tied to 6 foot leashes.

I enjoyed the video. I like buying organic produce and meat. A while ago I realized though: if I don't grow it, I don't know it. I decided that if it taste better I'll buy it. Words and labels are deceptive, and we never really know what is in our food... I live in Denver and noticed you all were already wearing jackets. Gotta love the variety in the vastness that is the U.S.A.

Yes I want to see more of this
You’re doing a good job, I guess. Never being on a ranch or around cattle I claim ignorance
You are helping me not to be so ignorant
    Thank you

Why do you have to hot brand cows? Why can't you freeze brand them like ppl do with horses? Freeze branding looks ALOT less painful. Holding a cow down and burning them like that looks and sounds like torture. There has to be a more humane way to do this....
Those poor calves choke the shit out of themselves because they're trying to get away from the horse. Aww so sad.

Tons O' Fun! For me anyway. I love your videos. Somehow, I keep tripping over these heads up you keep giving. Explaining to people about what is going on. Not sure why this floors me that people need to hear this. I'm the dummy for thinking that most people have common sense. Oops!! There. I said it. If a person watches these videos and needs to be told that the ranchers are not hurting the animals, wow. Just wow!

If they are sick they need antibiotics to help them just like if we get sick. They been treating animals this way forever now for some stupid reason someone came up with its bad. Ranchers have to make money to survive and keeping the cows healthy and growing is the only way.

But why do you brand them instead of tagging them? Wouldn't that be faster and less stressful for the animals?

Great video. Why do you brand and tag the calves? Is branding for external purposes (e.g., to prevent theft) and tagging is for internal purposes (e.g., to track calves to their mothers, etc.)? Thanks for the videos. They are great.

Just found your channel and your doing a great job explaining. It would be hard to show this side of ranching with all the backlash from keyboard worriers in the world these days but i think your doing a great thing with these videos explaining it all.
