I wasn't able to get to the polls in time for this one and am so happy to hear the results. You are giving us all a tremendous gift with your candid and insightful meditations, your courage to be "wrong" and to consider, and that includes all the non-industry, non-music aspects (aka being a human being). I think its your sharing of those make the other stuff resonates so deeply.

Oh man I love your grumpy videos..! The angry and impulsive part is always good fun, but I also really find fascinating how you analyse and categorise stuff afterwards. It's like trying to create order and meaning in the chaos of life and I find it very inspiring and I always learn a lot from this. I should probably start doing it myself as well, I believe it would be a way of being more aware of my own thoughts, by giving them structure instead of leaving them in a shapeless subconscious mess. By the way, I'm really curious now and I'll have to listen to Lemonade :)

Thanks for video! I think I may reference this to all the snobs that surround me as well. As education on music has gotten better over the years it seems many people have turned some rudimentary knowledge into a podium to preach what is "good music" and "bad music" to those around them. Sad to see an amazing exploration of sound turned into a debate

Cheers Christian for another great one! I really appreciate it!
One of the biggest things that I realised when I was studying my bachelor of music just recently was that a formal education in music means nothing, if you do not appreciate the music that you are being introduced to. Everyone hears Beethoven's music and Mozart, and of course Debussy's 'Claire du Lune' because of it featuring in films if not for any other reason, but definitely one of the things that I had to address myself (and still am) is that I too am a music snob. And one of the first introductions to my realizations of this is upon hearing Schoenberg's 'Pierrot Lunaire' and immediately thinking "WTF!"
Likening it to going out for dinner, I find myself to going to the same places and ordering the same thing off the menus, not because I would consider myself unadventurous or boring, but because I know what food I like; the same can probably be said for tastes in music. Even though I grew up in a musical family, jazz was never played / listened to, so I never gained an appreciation for it up until completing my classical education in piano and realising how bloody rigid you become when you play and how much you hate playing scales for your exams (which are kind of important for jazz playing so I hear? asking for a friend)
Having an aversion to jazz and pop songs / pieces and much of 20th century works throughout college really came out of not actively listening to them, and only for having to study jazz and 20th century works in detail as part of my course, I'd say that I'd still be in the loop of ignorantly hating on them. The first few times I listened Leroy Jenkins feat. Muhal Richard Abrams - 'The Weird World' or Ligeti's 'Poeme Symphonique for 100 Metronomes' or John Cage's '4 minutes and 33 seconds' I thought "that's not music" or even Ornette Coleman and free jazz. Because it was not something I was used to, I immediately hated on it without listening to it, until I actually listened to it and opened up to it and its ideas. Do I fully understand those works and others? Fucked if I know! Am I trying to appreciate the genius in them? Of course!...because if we can't appreciate someone else's work how are we going to expect anyone to listen to our own and give a damn.
And I think an important thing to note is that appreciating something isn't necessarily liking it, but is giving it the chance that it deserves on the merit that it evolved from someone's own creative process, and whats more vulnerable than that?
I'm open to opinions on this though.

Christian - This is not related to the video but i figured you may hopefully see this question on a recent video. This may be a question for a later vlog or maybe i missed the video where you explained. How did you start up with spitfire? Starting a sample/virtual instrument company must take a large amount of monetary investment up front. Your profession as a composer must have helped in that way and a few others i imagine? I would love to start my own company similar to Spitfire and many others. Of course, I would start small and promote sample packs but the end goal would be to have my own virtual instrument company. I can imagine when starting out the costs of hiring musicians, buying/renting the right equipment, and even just renting a proper studio must be quite taxing. Any insight would be much appreciated.
    All the best,
    Joe

Christian you are great! I love that smart and clever mind of yours and the way you expose facts. Your way of course but it's intrigueing. I cannot hide i'm a little envious for tha fact you have 3 pairs of Harbeth speakers. It means you could afford to buy them and you deserve the best. In Italy those speakers are quite difficult to find and they are so expensive I must still just look at them and wait with lots of hope...One day I will but my Harbeth speakers and I am looking forward to unpack them and listen in exstasy...I love jazz and used to play jazz in my early years but anyway I don't really distinguish music in categories. Music is music if well done and that's it...Beyonce is good music and that's it! Keep on rolling...

FM Radio arrived in Oz in the late sixties. As a student of classical music at the time, I also loved blues, rock and some jazz. Many of the old music snobs decried wasting FM channels on rock music because the music was low fidelity and did not need FM! It amused me a few years later that when CDs arrived, much of the classical repertoire was re-mastered to take advantage of the full dynamic range which vinyl was incapable of delivering.
    Loved the rant.

My awesome wife was really nervous about playing me the music she liked for a long time. Being a composer, she expected me to be a music snob, which I’m totally guilty of especially when I was a bit younger. But as someone who wants to communicate through music, knowing what music speaks to different people and trying to understand how it does that is so important. On a more human note, blanket snobbery is a great way to alienate people - and that’s not something I really want to do.
In my 20s I worked on We Will Rock You, the queen musical. I personally don’t really like Queen’s music (ahem, understatement) BUT listening to it every night for weeks at a time, I had to clock into the details to stop myself going mad - which was incredibly valuable!

I have found these vlogs a little late in the game so I’m a bit behind. I started from the beginning so I’m getting there. I had to comment on this one as it rang so many bells. I remember like it was yesterday when my piano tutor refused outright to let me have a break from my grades when I was eleven (1984) and I asked him if I could learn to play an Abba track that my Mum really liked. I was constantly practicing for my grade 2 practical at the time so still very much a novice. He said under no circumstances would he be teaching me anything of the sort, and that If I wanted to take this seriously I would have to continue with real music, the classical piano. It was this that made me give up the piano that same year. Luckily I started again 5 years later but I went it alone this time. I missed the poles but you do you Christian and Just ignore the crap.
One more thing, I listen to Kylie in the car and sing really loudly with the window down, it’s incredibly liberating.

It usually gets answers with “I like music that doesn’t suck”. Because that’s the only way I can clarify my feelings. From Yanni to Slayer, if it was performed well, produced in an interesting manner, recorded well, and “doesn’t suck”... I’m game for a listen.

If you say Beyonce is brilliant, I believe you. I learned long ago not to judge music as great or crap - as some of the simplest melodies and arrangements make the most beautiful music. I wouldn't listen to Beyonce because her music doesn't inspire me or move me. I got here for a Harbeth review. However, I enjoyed this video, and now I’ll watch the factory visit one!

I really started to hope, perhaps unrealistically that Beyonce was actually going to turn up in this video, while you were in New York; maybe somehow with Hans Zimmer, to throw some sass on those haters. haha. That would have been amazing! Good video though Christian, and while I do disagree with the idea of you going more political and religous (topically) in these vids, defo risking some sales at Spitfire long term from that kind of direction; theres no way given how big Spitfire is now that you haven't considered that..Which in of itself deserves some respect. Make sure you're always creative in whichever way you feel is right for you, regardless of us lot. Never silence that inner creative voice... Even if it just wants to say c**t, haha. It's almost like you could have been in The Sex Pistols! Anyway this one made me chuckle a fair bit, keep going.

I think he can be pretty safe in assuming that most money spitfire makes in sales comes from an audience that even if they dislike his personal political view, would not hesitate to buy his software because of it, since the company isn't sponsoring any political party or candidate.

I agree 100%. All music has it's merits and I've lost count of the times that I've said to people who don't like a particular genre of music that they are basically calling the million or more people idiots...

I think there is a gulf between not liking a type of music and calling those who do idiots. You are basically negating anyone the right to express a dislike.

The initial reasoning for making this video is so absurd. People are fucking idiots, but you were able to turn it into something interesting and took us on a journey with this video. Thanks Christian.

Hey Christian, if you haven't already, grab a copy of Sia's "1000 forms of fear". Another amazing album from a female artist. Sonically very impressive.

Thieving thugs can make it a round trip and a half. For the community of this channel, I have started my first music picture project for a film on a free composer basis and I wouldn't have achieved what I have so far without learning tips and tricks from this coming from a session musician background, and an entry level videographer but an ace fast offline and online editor.

"There's only two kinds of music - the good stuff, and the other stuff; and who's interested in the other stuff(?)" - Duke Ellington
On finding out that I was listening to jazz my secondary school music teacher took half-an-hour of their time to tell me how it was inferior because 'they were just making it all up as they went along'. Somehow, it seems, making it all up beforehand was better music. But didn't those people making it up beforehand just make it up as they went along too - just, at a different time?

Some jazz is interesting, some is good, but a lot is awful and most don't have time to wait around and listen to meandering nonsense that rarely pays off.
Most people like a melody and a good beat and a syncopated bridge which ties everything together quite nicely. It's that syncopated bridge where your jazz lies.
Most people don't hate jazz, it's that they enjoy jazz elements in limited amounts to compliment the music they do like.

Thank you Christian, thanks to you, I will go to bed tonight less stupid, even if I admit that I will not extend the experience. I also admit that I never listened to an entire album of Beyoncé - not even a single piece of her music - and that I wanted to try. As we say at home: "It's done!" (« Ca, c’est fait ! ») and I must admit that I appreciated some pieces, and that f.....g big sound !
For the rest of your comments, totally agree. And another expression from us (I quote a French singer, Brassens): "When we're stupid, we're stupid." (« Quand on est con, on est con! »)I hope we can find a good translation: this is a good illustration of your remarks about snobs, retrograde and short minded people.
Continue to teach me things, make me laugh (keep on grumble) and share other points of view than mine, and in addition, it helps me to progress in English!

I must have watched this video more than ten times now. I am a bit of a fan of Beyonce's, but I am a huge fan of your categorisation of TH-cam trolls. It is really incredible what people will write in the comments sections. But then again - if that opportunity to vent will keep them from beating up their wives, I suppose we should let them.

I too had a snobbish professor who inversely shaped the course of my music education when he told me John Williams is a hack and that "every note of Howard Shore's Lord of the Rings was stolen." Proof that the snobbery and criticism surrounding film music is often more than criticism of "modern" scores, but a negative view of the entire medium in general.

Contempt prior to investigation! Today has been a great day. The nightmare of the past four years is over. They played Beyoncé tonight when Kamala walked out to deliver her speech. Happy to hear you have daughters. Lemonade is crazy good btw.
