I think this is like the guy is dying and making his profession of love to the girl before he dies and each gift is also a representation of his fading from the world and also the girl's color being brought back to the world. The girl and guy are in love and the guy's dying sucks the color out of the world for the girl and the guy doesn't want to die and know his girl is unhappy and grey when he is dead so he restores her color before he dies. It also could be like an emo love story where they girl's life is grey and before he dies he wants the girl to be happy so that she too doesn't completely fade after her love- the only color and hope left in her life- leaves forever. It reminds me of my own emo love story (yes I'm emo if you didn't already know) where my life is grey and dull and the almost only light in my life is my BF and he is slowly helping me rebuild myself, although he isn't dying or professing his love with gifts (which is completely fine with me). It also reminds me of the book "Don't Die, My Love" by Lurlene McDaniel. The perfect background music for this game would be some My Chemical Romance, especially off the album The Black Parade and off the Conventional Weapons albums
