Thanks, I got in touch with them and spoke to Benjamin. I have ordered a copy of Simple Gifts. Can't wait. They are great people, by the way, really kind!
It's been my very favorite among all the other renditions of Lord of the Dance for at least that long, too. Nothing else has ever measured up. Thanks for posting this!
Thank you for posting. I have been looking for this version for years now. I heard it about 30 years ago as well and had the album but lost it over various moves. By far the best ever.
Thanks for posting this. Brings back such fond memories; when I was a kid, I heard this on an obscure radio show in Boston, and it made me want to play. Lovely, lovely song. :)
I've spent several years trying to find this arrangement. I've given up and am now making my own arrangements, one for a duet and one SATB. I've never done any arranging before. It's rather fun.
I'm pretty sure that this album has been out of print for years, which is sad. There was much excellent material there. And yes, arranging is much fun. I haven't done any in probably 30 years, but some day, I'd like to have a piano again, to do more.
I first heard this around 1975 on Waltham's (near Boston) WCRB Saturday Night hosted by Richard L. Kaye. WCRB and WCLV exchanged a lot of stuff, I'm confident that's where WCLV got their recording. I saw Crofut and Luxon live once at Tanglewood and also in Worcester MA when they and Telarc recorded their "Two Gentleman Folk" CD. I like to say I have a "bit part" on it. Kaye played the pre-LP recordings often, and claimed he did so as a "public service." Indeed they were.
Did Bill crofut have a shiny metal necked banjo that you can remember? I own one of his old banjos, I know he took mine on world tour but I don't know if it was used past the 60's?
Last night on WFMT's episode of The Best of Studs Turkel, Studs was talking with Bill Crofut about recording this album in between playing songs from it. Good times.
Yep - 30 years ago, WCLV, Cleveland. IIRC, the show was called "Saturday Night", except if you listened to the Wednesday afternoon rebroadcast, when it was called "Saturday Night on Wednesday Afternoon"........ WCLV had some great shows back in the day. Remember "Mike's Tune"?
They also performed several times on WCLV's "Live at the Arabica"" ,a half hour program split between music and poetery. I couldn't name any of the posts on a bet , but many folk groups, and I always made the effort to get to Pete Segar's shows.
Yes, 30 years ago; WRR-FM 101.1 in Dallas; Steve Cumming was the morning host then and debuted this album and this song one morning; according to legend, the WRR switchboard gave up the ghost that morning and a replacement had to be summoned. post-haste. It's on a CD on some obscure label with all their other stuff from Tanglewood
Hey, I can't buy this song anywhere. I have looked and it is not available. May I ask where you got it? If you have an mp3 of it, would you consider emailing it to me if it is "out of print". Thanks.
The lord of the Dance. As the song shows the Lord of the dance of eternal life. As the song clearly is referring to Jesus Christ, who came to Earth to save all man kind. If you accept and follow Christ, He will live in you and you will live in Him.
two gentlemen of Berkshire. Their music-and especially this particular song-is a national treasure.

Really very very beautiful ! Thanks!
Many thanks for this track. Now upload the rest of the album :)
I heard this years ago on The Folk Sampler and have loved it ever since.

We saw them live in Lydonville, VT in the early 70s. It was a concert that I'll never forget

Oh wow, that was like 1972! I can't remember what the instrument was, just the music and oddly, the venue.

I heard this one Saturday in 1990 during WGBH-FM's folk music show.
RIP Benjamin Luxon
I am 104 years old.

I heard this on Lenny Epstein's folk music show on KCSU, before the students took it over and turned it into a punk rock station. Good times.

can't buy it anywhere; but of course! it is a song to hear, to sing, to dance to, to die to. It is not a song to buy. It is utterly priceless.
I found the Tanglewood CD on ebay.
