Trust me it wasn't just being a godmother she bowed for, and if you think about it, no one bows just because it's their godmother. It's because she was amazed by the performance that she was given by her idol & godmother. Patti was idol well before given the title goddaughter. She bowed and touched her shoes as an honor to someone who she feels is greater than her who performed amazingly! If you know the story, Mariah Carey was finally able to meet her idol at home by invite because Patti LaBelle was always a top artist in her book. That's when she was given the title of godmother 😉

@@brent3522 heyo brent! I understand what u mean, but in this song that patti sang happened a phenomenom that comproves my theory... She was already doing a head voice, but then she suddenly got 1 note and a octave up! The only way to do this is actually thru changing registers, and here she got from a head voice to a whistle. And, other thing that proves my point is that the last note was sang in overtone, and only the whistle u can sing in the overtone, but not a head voice, well not at least that high. Hope it made sense to u :)
@@arthurlimasilva675 whistle notes are not overtones, they are on a separate register above the head voice. Patti's last belt had overtones, yes, but that was a product of her technique. Patti never whistled. And, if she indeed flipped to whistle you would hear a break between registers. And if it was as sudden and short as you say, it would sound like a yodel. Listen to Mariah's version and you'll hear what I mean. But what Patti did was amazing. You can't produce such audible overtones without resonance.

I think it's the overtone you're hearing. I had to replay that to be sure. Just high falsetto. overtones are a cool little trick of the voice.

I love that Patti chose one of Mariah's oldest songs, one she wrote at such an early stage in her career that announced her as a vocal and songwriting giant. It just shows the absolute timelessness of Mariah's catalogue. Has always been one of my top Mariah songs and I know she doesn't feel too fondly for it, I'm so glad that Patti could give it the Patti treatment and give the song some new life! What a brilliant moment!

This is how you prove that you are one of the greatest singers of all time. You sing such a difficult song to sing over 80 years old; still being capable of hitting such high notes with amazing voice control and power. Un afraid to belt them out with all of the strength you have without singing out of tune, without your voice cracking, and sounding amazing still at this age. What an amazing and unforgettable legend she is.
I have been a Patti LaBelle fan most of my life and people can say what they want about, she screams,over does it, tries to oversing everybody but, nobody and I mean nobody does it like she does and never will. I mean my God this Icon is damn near 80 years old and I would still put her up against any of today's so called superstars. Grio awards truly does have awesome mics and sound systems especially for livestream, the mic is outstanding- It picked up her overtones in her mixed belt and made it ring!
