The aquatic member of the team was set to be introduced in Season 2 but the series got cancelled even though JMS had written out what was going to happen in that season. VERY interesting stuff!
Looks like a demo reel intended to sell the concept of the show to the network. Very cool finding though. This is one of my favourite shows ever.
Absolutely awesome!
Never saw this before.
This promo footage has obviously much higher production values (better special effects, better photography,...) than the actual series.
Thanks for posting this!
I am kind of shocked that the "base" wasn't held onto for the show or games you could play after.
Wow, never knew they had an "Aquatic attack force"....I guess Max Ray from the Centurions was every future fighting forces role model.
This is what it's all about I remember this on Saturday mornings at 6AM in NYC (Forgot the Channel though). I use to have the ship and I always wanted Dreads Chamber because it had an awesome see thru laser turret. What I love about this show it has that old school sci-fi look and feel to it. Thank you for the video much appreciation.
I USED TO BE CRAzy about this show! :/
Very cool and nostalgic!
Thanks 🙏 for posting! It was my favorite sci-fi staff in childhood! I never knew about this promo, the actors are mostly different, could anyone tell their names?
Anyone else noticed the changed timeline? Here it's earth 2099, but in the actual series it's earth 2147.
I was expecting Lord Dread to come out with "Resistance is futile"
I was thinking the same thing. The guy does look like a Borg. I'm sure whoever wrote the first Borg TNG episode was a Captain Power fan.
I’m 43 years old. I watched Captain Power back in 1987. I’ve NEVER seen this before. I know Stingray was dropped because it was too expensive to do water scenes at the time. Wow.
Thanks for uploading this video. I have the whole show on my HD!
Even the actor who was suppose to play Captain Jonathan Power seemed convincing enough to play him.
The only actor who returned for the actual series was the guy who played Tank Ellis.
And 20 years from now, while nostalgics will desperately wish to return to what now is the present, I'll enjoy the new spectacular stories that progress in information technology will make possible.
Other major contributing factors included the higher cost of a childrens live-action show (each episode cost an estimated $1 million to produce) compared to the cheaper production costs of a cartoon, as well as the fact that the gameplay between the show and the toys was extremely poor.
I've been thinking about this show for a long time and couldn't remember the name of it! Loved it when I was a kid!
Thus, the story was filled with romantic kisses, sexual innuendo, and occasionally scenes which implied sexual encounters between characters. Mild profanity was also present; "damn" was said on at least one occasion, and just before her death, Pilot told Blastaar to "go to hell" in response to his order to surrender. In addition, the violent death of one of the major ongoing characters in the series was also an unusual development for a children's series.
I noticed that, when I watched the show. But, fortunately, it doesn't have any obscenities (including e.g., the "F" or "S" words), drug use, or, nudity.
The Captain Power comics published in Italy in 1988/89 were explicitly based on THIS promo, NOT on the series that was broadcast! They had "Stingray" Johnson; Lord Dread was skinny and he had a completely mechanic right arm like in this promo! The artists of those comics also meant for Lord Dread's voice to be metallic (like in this promo) and not human (like in the series) because they used square balloons for him (like they did for robot characters) instead of oval balloons like for humans.
I noticed that the sea guy was gotten rid of.
Stingray was abandoned because the sea scenes would have been too expensive to film at the time. One of the Golden Book covers features an image of Stingray.
@breukets2000 it's a pitch, a promo shown to the networks and sponsors. they came up with the basic designs and sets, got some actors to show off the suits and action and then the networks and sponsors bid on it. eventually we get the actual show with some changes and some of them show inconsistencies such as the omission of Stingray and Tritor which were available as toys and other promotionals, i believe.
FUCKING AWSOME!!! Man I almost Sheaded a tear :)
Way cool promo! Glad it helped to sell the show!
One of the most interesting aspects of Captain Power was the fact that a great majority of the storyline was filled with romance and intrigue, which was made for the adults who watched the show with their children -- who more often played with the toys.
How cool is this? I forgot all about this. Pretty high quality for its time.
Captain Power attempted to appeal to both children and adult audiences. Ultimately, this became the shows undoing after coming under fire for being too violent for children (e.g. toys for shooting at the television, live-action violence) as well as driving away adult audiences with its more childish aspects (e.g. the shows title).
Are reffering to the 'new one' or the 'old one' or both?
Dam that was awesome!
Wow! I remember this show when it first came out in 1987. I was 12 years old. And a totally different cast, w/ the exception of the actor who played Michael "Tank" Ellis, and there was an addtional hero for the the water assault. Some TV show executive should really consider remaking this show for this new generation of kids.
@@SENTRYXX They were talking about it but it didn't come to be and it wasn't a reboot, it was a sequel 15 years later.
Poor timeslot choices also contributed to the shows undoing-it was sold to syndication as opposed to a regular network timeslot, which resulted in some television stations airing it in the 5-6am timeslot on Sunday mornings. The subsequent poor ratings hastened the shows demise.
@the1truebakasama: It sure is, and he is smoking in the promo! Great message for the target audience. Ah, the 80's, how I miss thee.
I was wondering about the 'StingRay' water soldier, and why he is in this particular promo, but not in the actual TV show which followed.
Oh well, like someone else already pointed out, the setting was a desert wasteland, so not much in the way of water!
I had no idea there was a 'Captain Power' Comic Book Series! I have to look it up, and track down the back issues!
Granted, the future Earth in 'Captain Power' is more of a desert world, with less water available.
Still, the StingRay character could have appeared as a guest character in a couple of episodes. Might have been cool.
This is funny. They didn't get the title logo finished yet, so they used some wack typeface in 3D until someone got a better one done. Wasn't the aquatic guy not even in the show? I figured since they fought on a wasteland there wouldn't be too much water anywhere.... :(
Come to think of it now, this is a lot like centurions from the 80's too...I wonder if thats where they got the idea
Wow, this one had just a bit more testosterone. I love the standard intro and especially Pilot. I could fall in love with her. She's actually not much older than I'm.
Even though it still had me scoffing at the pregnant women and the unborn children, this Sci-fi series was still going on strong. You know how Lord Dread, sends off Sauron and Blaster, to digitize humans on this earth. The series had definitely skipped out Colonel sting ray Johnson. 😳 I also accidentally found a 'Cannibal Corpse' death metal CD mural that shows, these new born baby boys and girls, who were murdered by these 2 men who are zombies. This was a 1991 release/publication.💀
The voice over sure sounds like Clancy Brown.
You'll have to ask the 'cult of trek' or an anti-consumerist to tell you that one. I'm no longer interested in it. Well, you've made a good observation anyway. I'm pretty impressed.
I had the basis of the CP so it never worked out! I wonder if it was because of the broadcast sign in Mexico.
noticed the voice of the narrator, the voice of Teknoman Darkon from Teknoman
Anyone know the names of the actors in this?
CGI mechanoids were much more menacing on Captain Power than the droid army combined in the Star Wars prequels.
But there was a major ("Hawk" Masterson), whose degree is higher than captain anyway.
Anyway, in the comic that introduced "Stingray", the water he had to go through was that of a sewer, where a cult worshipping a computer was settled.
You're not making sense. Come back when you're sober.
Why didn't we see the aquatic member Stingray in the original Captain Power series?
BSG is what the 1998 Godzilla film is to the Godzilla franchise
This is interesting. Really good. But I've so used to the actual Soarons desing, I can't hardly imagine him to look different. Even if there ever will be a continuation of the series, a restylized Soaron would be a disapointment for me. But I'm really happy the didn't stay with the staff shown here. Hawk, Power, Pilot and even Scout are looking like taken out of a fuckin tooth paste comercial. There should be a blink where they are showing their teeth. No fuckin way for those dolls...
Although the power on energizer here looks more like the toy, I still like the actual series version better.
I'm hoping for Stingray to be in the new Captain Power series!!!
Yes. As in, spectacular without any cheesiness.
it says that you hate bab5 as well. i reckon you're a DS9er type, aye?
Power off!! You can't remake this kind of show. 1st of all, it's too ahead of it's time to do so. 2nd, it's too risky to revive it in this post-modern era of Digital TV. You don't want it to fall into the hands of studio execs whose responsible of dumbing-down TV/Movies, do you? The time just isn't RIGHT to revive Captain Power. It's best for you, me, and everybody else to be VERY careful of what we wish for. Cause it might rock, slide, and cave in above our heads aka AVALANCHE!
Enjoy the new BSG while you can, because 20 years from now people are going to think that it's just as campy as the original
60 fps?
Oh c'mon man! Give the show a break, will ya? Christ! The writer who created Babylon 5 helped made this. If you come to think of it, this is show was like Terminator for kids.
Did Lord Dred have a stroke?
Something like that... He was essentially torn to bits in an explosion. his super computer Overmind put him back together as a cyborg to make him something more than Human. But even Overmind couldn't avoid giving Lord Dred a few "side effects"... Captain Power would most likely claim that he is actually far, far less!
You mean, as far as the facial drooping? That's one of the 4 warning signs of stroke.⚠️
There was supposed to be a water soldier...? Intriguing...
D'awwwwwwwwww babbeh's first troll~
Power on
Dude, I know I'll gain nothing from it, but I think you should reconsider your feelings for this show. I mean it's a really good series. It's as good as Terminator.
yeah well it only last one season...
And you're a sweetheart. Wanna hug & kiss? It's the Russian special.
Battlestar Galactica? Dude, that series has split-personality problems. BSG? Not in my vocabulary.
never happened even for a reboot
Those cast of Captain power are not real. Just like what happen to the hit Cybertorn aka VR troppers and the pilot episodes of Power rangers season 1. Some other cast were change. I saw this on Landmark here in the Philippines back in the 80's
I have thought about it dude...long and hard, and right now, nothing is as healthy as a clear glass of water. If I think otherwise, I watch a shitty, gutless remake that keeps my reservations in check, it's called Bionic Woman. See what I'm saying?
Obvious job titles are obvious code names
@mwells219 nooooo way, they distryoed stargate trying to bsg it. BSG storys made simple, everyone gets involved with someone then they start cheating on eachother drama starts, main story arcs, survive, oo and awww add some more sex into it for the network. Micheal stranziski creater of babylon 5 canceld the spin off the crusade cause network wanted controll. BSG is a bad rip from "space abouve and beyond", i know im over reacting i just really dont like that show lol :D.
Yeah, likely story...I'm sorry you don't like captain power, but it was a good show believe it or not. At least siskel & ebert liked it, but they're film critics so I guess that doesn't count. For the record, those 2 are jackasses for dissing Blade Runner. I love Blade Runner a whole lot. I don't see how Captain Power can be such a threat to it as a ripoff.
One of my first TV Promos I worked on. Lots of fun working on it.
I’d love to hear any stories about the making of this promo you’d like to share!
Nice!
