Very nice your videos, I am a whirligig maker too and I love to make them ... sometimes I do not have enough room to put them all and then my wife complains. I do not know if I get a bigger room or another wife. Your tips were very useful to me. Congrats.

Great helpful videos. Thank you. After successfully making a basic weather/wind vane, I’ve been experimenting with whirligigs. Can you shed some light on size constraints. I made one with two woodpeckers on either side of a tree with the one on the fan side moving the one on the other side. Is there a ratio for the weight for the woodpeckers to the fan or how much wind I would need to get it moving. I think I need a hurricane to move my fan.

Hello Leon, many thanks for your kind comment. In my opinion size is not important and often when I have made one I wished that I had made it larger as the bigger they are the more effective they look. I have tried all different types of fans from one with two blades which was very poor and cannot be recommended right up to one with 12 blades. Normally 4 or 5 blades is sufficient.
The problem is that if you make the fan too efficient and you get strong wind they vibrate the whirligig so much it can break.
Some years ago I made on with two pecking chickens with a blade as efficient as a 'spitfire' propeller, it used to whizz around until one day in a storm it 'took off' and crashed to the ground!

Hi scrimperuk! Having to fiddle around is essential to whirligig making; it's constant problem solving. More whirligig videos please. Thank you for the video. Take care.

scrimperuk I'll look forward to that mate. Incidentally I have a couple of ratchet screwdrivers - would you like to have them?

Thanks Mark, thanks for the kind ratchet offer but I do have too many already to be honest. Over the years I have collected so much stuff that I am running out of space.

Thanks for your comment Steve. I am afraid that whirligigs are notoriously 'hit and miss' they need a lot of fiddling to get them to work, well at least mine do. To be honest I am not an expert on making them, it's trial and error for me. sometimes they work sometimes they don't but it's quite absorbing fiddling with them.

Greetings from down under. For what its worth...If you drill some random small holes on a glue area of a piece of wood and poke the glue into the holes join the wood together and it's like having a load of screws holding the wood together. (saves you buying screws ) Now I am waiting for your next video masterpiece

@@scrimperuk Who could get bored watching your videos ?? and for what it is worth might I suggest that before you fit a collar next time ...file a flat on the shaft it will give you a bigger area for the screw to bite
