Devo is certainly not everyone's cup of tea. I'm sure this won't sway your opinion, but they are one of the original influencers of the New Wave movement of music in the late 70s. Just think the Talking Heads, Cars, Blondie or B52s. I would give 'Whip It' a listen. It's there most commercial hit.
Finally Devo!! One of the most entertaining bands of the 80s. They put on a real show. I love Devo. You’re forgiven Maddy. This isn’t the best song to start with Devo. It’s a bit shocking. And you really need to watch them perform to get it.
@@RedVynil Maybe but its kind of like jumping into cold water. I would start with Whip It, as that was their most popular. My actual favorite is Girl U Want, or Human Rocket.
@@artsolano6762 That's how I got into them and was instantly a huge fan until a few years later when they went disco, commercial and didn't treat their fans very well.
I saw Devo at The Agora Ballroom, in Atlanta, GA, on December 27, 1978. According to an archive set list this was the third song of their set. Devo's biggest hit, Whip It, which everyone is suggested you react to, wasn't released until August 13, 1980. They may sound jarring and disjointed (a natural 1st reaction). I went to the show not expected much more than a few laughs but they were actually a very polished group of musicians. Their herky-jerky style was quite intentional. Love 'em or hate 'em they certainly grabbed everyone's attention.
Devo never impressed me. As for covers of Satisfaction, my favorite is the one by Ksenia Buzina (she's done backing vocals with Leonid and Friends as well as being a solo artist). She's certainly prettier than Mick ever thought he was.
You shouldn't hold back if you don't like them. First, it's a rare treat to see a TH-cam reactor admit to not liking something. I, for one, appreciate the honesty. Second, Devo was less a band and more an experience. They were pushing boundaries and they and their fans were always at peace with the idea that not everyone was onboard with that.
LMAO 😅😅😅😅😅. I can totally see why you would think that, but I'm sure there's an analog to that phenomenon nowadays. Because I think you recently reacted to the original Rolling Stones hit from the 1960s, it's such a classic and well-known song, and was already cool and pushing the boundaries with lyrics for radio play. And so when Devo comes out of that punk new wave movement that was happening going into the 1980s, this was a parody of the Rolling Stones hit in a way, but it showed their incredible creativity and sense of humor, but it also fit, because they were part of the cutting edge sound of that emerging scene. Being young and in Kansas, I had never heard of them until suddenly they were performing live on Saturday Night Live one night, and it's all anybody talked about the next day at school. Plus their music videos are insane, and they pull a lot of that stuff off in live performances as well. They have a lot of original songs as well, and they are a beloved band to a lot of people. They influenced music so much in their own particular way.
No, you’re right it sounds the same to me too! But I just love it! Imagine the playlist is going (used to be the radio) and it’s like hit after hit poppy rocky sounds.. and then this comes on! And you smile for a while😊
I have this album. I like it, though I wouldn't call myself a big Devo fan. Devo was actually the first concert I ever went to back in high school around 1980. They were awesome and my friends and I had a great time.
A lot of people didn't understand devo. They were a serious band with a sense of humor.. but who were commited to making social commentary with their music. Their voices weren't incredible but they weren't trying to out sing anyone. Their schtick was a sort of scifi apocalyptic feel. And their shows portrayed that. DEVO was short for de-evolution. ;0) Try their originals "Beautiful World" , "Later is Now", and "No Place Like Home". "Whip It" was probably the song people remember the most because of MTV.
It's a great example of what a mess music was in the early 80s. There was a lot of great music made and then there was a lot of songs like this. A transition of rock and punk into pop and synth
Their name is short for the Devolution and it's part of their sense of humor and their style. This album's very good but the one song that's a cover is probably the worst one on the Album. Gut Feeling and Uncontrollable Urge are ones you should check out.
I’m an out lyre but I liked it way back when and so it goes, I cannot wait until you head down the rabbit hole of 80’s Synth POP, have a gr8t weekend Maddy and many blessings always....
Never play Satisfaction as a first tune. They have great music,, And as a band that innovated and when they call bands Punk, Be Wave, electronic music Devo started it.
Funny you said it sounds like a kid wrote this, lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh wrote most of Nickelodeon shows They are concept band. The idea is that the world is De-Evolution, the guitar riff is played backwards from the original. Bringing me back to high school in Florida. We had a big swimming pool, and this album was always on the playlist for parties. Guess you had to be there to love this. Lol
they were less a band than a multimedia performance art troupe (before there was such a thing) based around the theme of how humanity and culture were DEVOlving into a weird corporate, suburban, plastic, mass-produced kind of soulless fascism. Very much a post-hippie / proto-punk 70's counter-culture thing. Most people didn't get it. But, yeah, Pretty much everything you hated about the recording was in service to that theme.
it was meant to be horrible. devo's schtick was to be annoying on purpose. it was all part of the joke. in the early days while performing live, they would go off on these extended extremely-repetitive musical parts just to anger the audience and get them throwing things at the stage. it was musical subversion - making songs to irritate the listeners who didn't get the joke, and amuse the others who did.
Why don't you start it at the beginning? For that matter, you should've been using the video of them actually performing it. Yes, that's a guitar, if you'd been watching the perfomance, you would've known. Very `70's! It came out in `78. No, it's one their best songs. About 12 years later, he did the music for the cartoon series, "Rugrats". Mark has also done a few movie soundtracks.
My best friend wanted the Devo album for his birthday when it first came out. I previewed some tracks at the record store and liked Whip it, but that was about all. I brought it up to the counter and the check out girl was surprised that I was buying it. I said it was a present for my best friend. She looked at me and said; I'm sure you can find something better than that.... can't you? I still bought it but with a lot of hesitation.😮

The guy singing wrote all the music for Rugrats.
