Happily surprised to hear Voivod on here. Very underrated band. They really mashed a lot of influences into their work. Very unique band, jazz chords, thrash, technology uses, tempo changes, punk. I have Killing Technology on vinyl and it's wild. Art was done by one of the band members. I won't guess who, I think it was Away, but I'm likely wrong. Really great band and still releasing great music.
Lol ya, that album is phenomenal, and those songs are great! I didnt wanna go too easy on him, but also didnt wanna dump him into the deep end, like so many people do, like starting people on Judas Priest with Painkiller for Gods sake lol just going up and punching them straight in the mouth for no reason has less effect ;) so I figured Tribal Convictions was a perfect song to pique his interest. Voivod are an amazing band, but being progressive means theyre IMPRESSIVE, but not always the easiest listen.
No way man, bad idea. Sub-effext or x-ray mirror wouldve hooked him. Those fantastic changes and weird rhythms. You saw his reaction, hes talking about them like theyre some underground unknown garage band, for us dimension hatross is a classic for a newbie who is a musician, Nothingface or even Outer Limits or Angel Rat and let him work back to the noisier stuff.
@@famousforever8556 he reacts to requested stuff man, that’s why we talk about what he should have done. Someone suggested this, the critique is of the person who suggested it not Andrew.
Voivod is...different. I was listening to Angel Rat (two albums after Dimension) a few days ago and stylistically it is all over the place, but somehow always unmistakably Voivod. At times post punk, 90s alternative, metal. You don't know what's coming one track to the next, one section to the next, one bar to the next. Nothingface is a bit of a masterpiece IMO. One of my all time favorite albums.
Omg someone is doing Voivod.. They're from Canada btw...I listened to their first 2 albums to death when I was 14-15 yrs old...Piggy the guitarist was a forerunner in weird riffs and strange sounds and influenced Head and Munky from Korn what a way to start my Sunday lol This is one of 3 songs I learned to play and it's so much fun...Cool music fact: Jason Newsted from Metallica joined this band for 15 yrs after he left Metallica 🧐🤘✌️
Voivod is one of my favorite thrash bands of all time. Saw them live multiple times. Though calling them thrash is a bit limited in my opinion. Every album adds something new. Glad you enjoyed it :D
Voivod is unique and grossly underappreciated by the NON music nerd types. Ask many rock and metal musicians about Voivod and they sing high praise. French Canadian thrash prog....Their newer material is great too. Original drummer FYI.
jamais j'aurais cru entendre nos gars de Jonquière ici lol. They are Québécois and here (and in Canada) they are our pioniers. Try another song but in live, you will see they are here since a long time. Good vidéo, thank you.
Dimension Hätross was and IS soooo far ahead of its time. I kid at a summer debate camp turned me on to them in 1988 or '89. Nothingface is excellent too, a little less metal-y but still amazing. Andrew I think you'll like a bunch of their records. The guitarist Piggy sadly was taken by cancer way too early.
When thrash metal was becoming stale, even in its infancy, Voivod took a left turn and created something totally unique that, to this day, has never been repeated by any other band. They remain in my top 3 greatest thrash metal bands. Or metal in general. Check out songs from "Nothingface", "Angel Rat" and "The Outer Limits". Three, back to back, landmark albums.
Piggy (guitarist) was able to play most Yes albums, backwards. Their debut contained a very strong influence of Black Sabbath, punk and early extreme metal (if you can say that about Venom).
Never heard of them before. Going to investigate them some more. Since I stared watching you, I’ve discovered music that I missed over the years. I’m still stuck in the ‘60s , but I’ve started to like Metal in the last year.
In the early 90's the next 3 big bands were going to be Soundgarden, Faith No More and Voivod, so they all went on a tour, with Voivod headlining. Voivod released an amazing album named Angel Rat, right while they were kind of falling apart. They toured the album a little, but with a session bassist. Then did a great album named The Outer Limits, which they did no touring in support of, so they kind of fizzled from being the next big thing to a band that never reached their potential commercially. Also, fun tie in to your KISS mention: After this album they signed to Gene Simmons vanity label. So going from KISS to this weirdly connects.
Saw Voivod at Carleton University in Ottawa Canada (1993 or 1994) with Soundgarden and Faith no More opening. Great show. My friends and me knew Soundgarden and Faith No More were bands to watch. And we all love Voivod.
Voivod is an absolutely unique band. From the extremely raw early albums with a bit weird thrash and further on their more developed music in later album. Their latest album is awesome ❤
It's really good to see something like this. Voivod is such an underrated metal band and Dimension Hatross as well as Killing Technology are, in my opinion, are two of their best albums. I interviewed Away a couple of years back on my channel. He's a really nice, down to earth guy.
Voivod was influenced by just about everything they've ever heard and they were great at incorporating it all into their own music at different times throughout their career. They are such a great band and criminally underappreciated by the masses. They should be so much bigger than they are. I'm so glad you have been introduced to them, and I really hope that you visit many more of their songs.
Viovod are an attitude as much as they are band. I first heard them after their debut War and Pain album - which, looking back was "not musically polished" to put it politely. But you can hear the seeds of greatness there, The anarko-punk overlay to the thrash sound, incorporating left-field ideas and disjointed, atonal riffs and solos were a catalyst and have teen taken further in the sounds of modern day Islandic-school black metal bands for example. There was nothing like them when they first released material and many in the metal field hated them - because they were so different and they eschewed the formats used beforehand by dearly cherished favourites. Voiod are a state of mind.
Welcome to the Voivod club Andrew! This was the first song I heard from Voivod myself, back in 1988, I've listened to them for three quarters of my life! For contrast check out the video for Planet Eaters from their latest album. And by the way the Drummer Away does ALL of the bands artwork.
I used to jam next to these guys in Montreal, really cool to stop playing a song and hear them jamming! Really nice guys and their current guitarist has/had and insane death metal band called Martyr with drummer Patrice Hamelin on their Warp Zone album.
I saw them in 86 at CBGBs. They didnt speak english yet. The stage show was a site to be seen gas masks smoke nuked earth feel. They were the opening act, but to be honest I cant remeber who head lined. It was insane I sill can see it in my head today
The perfect band in it's early years that was hard to classify in any genre. And VöiVöd is still killin' it. The perfect SciFi metal band. I believe the album cover artwork is also by Away, and the first albums are a continued futuristic sci-fi yarn. R I P Piggy🕯
Every video I watch of a musician or composer hearing Voivod for the 1st time it's like they got hit in the head with a brick. See them play live if you get a chance, mindblowing!
I dont know if anyone has said this but when voivod first started only Piggy the guitar player knew how to play he had to teach the drummer and bass player how to play their instruments as well. Also at the time of this album it was still the same original line up. They have gone through a couple of lineup changes but they are still rocking to this day. Unfortunately the original heart of the group ,guitarist Piggy did succumb to cancer, though they did find a most excellent replacement in Daniel "Chewey" Mongrain.
Bought the album in 88 aged 16. It took me years to get into. Challenging, yeah.Their earlier stuff is like thrash being played by aliens who have had music described to them via the medium of interpretive dance. They went more prog on subsequent albums. EDIT: This is the only approximately normal track on the album. EDIT 2: Not unpolished, but cut to tape without a click and on a limited budget.
I have to say I love how many times you looked utterly caught off guard by the changes in the song :) ! you also do not know that they are telling a story (with characters) so that is why there are different vocal inflections/effects, this album should be consumed as a whole... psychic vacuum ? macrosolutions? all amazing... and then a cover of the classic Batman theme ! you are at the tip of the iceberg man.
Thanks for doing this! Referring to the "cool artwork" statement - all (!) artwork is also from Michel "Away" Langevin. Seeing his artistic development over 40 years is pretty amazing too.
to help to understand the popularity of Voivod: they are not a big million selling band. But beware! Think of ANY of the "older" popular artists from the metal scene. Chances that you find pictures of them wearing an iconic Voivod shirt are kinda like 80%!
i was into thrash in the 80s, loved all the bands. this today stands as my favourite album of the whole era. It is an absolute classic. Immense. VoiVod were absolutely unique in the genre. It's a concept album and has to be listened to in it's entirety. I feel there's a direct link to Nonagon Infinity by King Gizzard.
I was brought to your video by a singer reacting to Voivod, good on you to do so. You are right about the album cover and one of the reasons why they attracted me to them as well (Away does their artwork)and for taking the lyrical focus away from the occult. They were very much overlooked since they were underground and well not easily digestible. Nice to see them given kudos in this platform.
You may be interested to check out their "Angel Rat" material from 1991. Coming off "Dimension Hatross" & "Nothingface", that one took an alternative/progressive/psychedelic rock turn. It was produced by Terry Brown, who produced all RUSH albums from 1974-1981. The two albums before it are my favourites, but I have a real soft spot for the catchy & original sounding tunes on Angel Rat.
One of my all time favorite bands. You can definitely hear the pink floyd and punk influence, but if youre familar with emerson lake & palmer's Tarkus it all makes perfect sense where these guys are coming from.
They've done a lot of different sounds over the years! Always with sci-fi lyrics. War and Pain, Rrröööaaarrr, Killing Technology, Dimension Hatröss ('80s) - I'd say are sort of harcore punk influenced Nothingface ('89)- Their most-loved album. Lots of psychedelic and progressive influences, including a Pink Floyd Cover. Production starts getting more streamlined. Angel Rat, The Outer Limits (early 90s)- Still progressive, but kinda leaning more radio-friendly (though I don't think either got airplay). Also a 17:30 minute epic on The Outer Limits because why not? Negatron to Infiniti (mid 90s to 2009)- More industrial metal than before Target Earth, Post Society (EP) (2013-2016) - A throwback to (in my opinion at least) Nothingface to The Outer Limits, but even more clean, even more progressive. I remember some of Post Society reminding me of Black Sabbath and other early metal The Wake, Synchro Anarchy and Morgöth Tales (2018 - 2023) - I haven't actually listened to these yet, but I'm guessing they'd continue what Post Society started
I would be super interested to see you react to a more modern Voivod song. They've been going for over 35 years at this point and if anything have aged like a fine wine, despite surviving the death of their guitarist and main songwriter Piggy in around 2005. I recommend checking out the single from their most recent album. The track is called 'Planet Eaters' or also another good one is 'Obsolete Beings' from the album before that
Voivod is a fantastic metal band. They have alot of different stuff to offer, but Rrroooaaarrr, DImension Hatross and Nothingface are all masterpieces in different ways. Thrash, punk, prog, jazz theyre amazing
New to me. One of the guitarist's voicings + some of the vocal structure in the second part gave me some Killing Joke vibes. Interesting. Sampling: I knew the Emu Emulator was around in the early 80s (I (81), II (84), III (87)), and the Ensoniq Mirage showed up in 85... but what I didn't realize was the Fairlight was released in 79 (and the Synclavier had the sampling option added in 82).
context: this is 1989...this was so out there for the time, and then the follow up albums are so insane and different... this was the last "thrash" album for awhile... you have to do "Jack Luminous" from the 1994 album "The Outer Limits" - 17 minutes ! and it does not bore or seem long.. it's insane (think space metal/pink floyd metal). The vocals.... Snake was very unique... and yeah, they had such a distinct thing going on, by this point they were really polished in their own thing. I am still waiting for you to discover King's X :)
We love the music for the music! Voivod kills! They rarely do what you expect them to! Recommended, "Forgotten In Space", "Ravenous Medicine", "Brain Scan", sir, I could be here all day! Voivod is the most criminally under appreciated bands of all time! TO THE DEATH! ^_^
Voivod are fantastic, and are a band that bands love. So glad to see you react to these guys. Hope to see more! The next album up (Nothingface) is considered their best work. You should have a listen to the title track - I think you will be pleased.
well, since you asked... Voivod to me's like an everything bagel! - Rush, Crimson, Sab/Ozzy, Alice, Floyd, Metallica, PIL (the band surely wear their influences on their tee's!). One solo from 'The Wake' is just total Brian May. so yeah... it's all in there!
Voivod is my favorite band. Saying they're just "Trash" isn't really an accurate statement. They have always explored their sound and have kind of distinct eras or sounds while remaining "Voivod". Kind of in the vain of a Rush or King Crimson. Would love to see more reactions as it's like rediscovering that song again through someone else. Some recommends: Heavy Raw Thrash: Korgull the Exterminator Progy "weird" Thrash: X-Ray Mirror Prog/"heavy rock?": Jack Luminous *highly recommend, Outer Limits underrated album Modern/Current Voivod: Orb Confusion
Glad you loved VoiVod Andrew. The production on their recordings only got better after this. You have to do the epic track Jack Luminous from VoiVod. Huge, monster drumming from Michael in this song. He is a drumming machine!!!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums Their last 2 albums (The Wake 2018 & Synchro Anarchy 2022 are also incredible. Perfect examples of Sci-Fi metallic Progressive rock with incredibly adventurous composition structures. For a band that's 40 years old & to still keep producing stunning art like this, is virtually unheard of. They just keep re-inventing themselves. Gods !
Killing Technology, Dimension Hatröss, Nothingface, Angel Rat and The Outer limits imo contains all the Voivod Essence. Basic to comprehend their entire evolution.
Sometimes you see a reaction video and wonder it it was real. This one Andrew, was real. The dilemma churning in your head was there and you DID have the right appreciation for what it brought to you as an experience. I know you didn't want to "offend" with your comments, and dont worry. Give them, honest and true. It was dirty, and gritty, and that's what it was supposed to be. Grew up on these guys and they are a hidden gem.
Lmao you ARE correct, I meant beating. I imagine drums are probably a bit chewy and hard on the teeth, though the shells might make great toothpicks, esp after Keith Moon has his way with them. Safe bet you can draw a direct influential line from Black Sabbath …as well as Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, and other Progressive bands… to ANY 80s metal bands. Same goes for all the Punk & Hardcore bands, Seattle bands and that whole Alternative scene…. Even if they were just influenced to say “I DO NOT want to do that” lol Voivod’s first album came out in 1984, so is really the Canadian Metallica/Anthrax/Slayer/Megadeth. If you were to extend the Big 4 of Thrash out to the Big Five, Voivod SHOULD be a top runner for that fifth spot, along with Exodus and Testament, and perhaps Switzerland’s Celtic Frost. Perhaps they just were too thrashy to begin with, and then went too Proggy, and that’s why they never really hit the big time, in the way other metal bands did. Progressive Thrash is definitely a limited audience. BTW, speaking of “bands you’ve never heard of but are sure to like”, I have a Progressive Hardcore band lined up for you, too. Progressive and Hardcore are basically mutually exclusive terms, since Progressive generally fills up space with as much oddball s**t as possible, and Hardcore’s idea of oddball is to strip the music down to its very essence, and play it as aggressively as possible. BUT this band does it incredibly well! Fans of Hardcore probably already know who I mean, since, as you can imagine, there arent many Progressive Hardcore bands. Hint: its not going to be NoFX’s 18 minute skate punk epic, “The Decline”. Also, they’re another Canadian band… SO GLAD you liked this, Andrew! One of my favorite things is turning people onto new shit theyve never heard, and blowing their mind! Its also why I love these reactions channels, because it reminds me of how elated I felt when I first heard those songs. Watching reactors hear Boston, Led Zeppelin, or a specific track like … Cat Scratch Fever by Ted Nugent, or Making Plans For Nigel by XTC… for the first time, is so cool! MORE greatness in the works. You havent heard the last of me, yeti!
Try something from The Outer Limits album, it has a theme, a bit more polished if you want to hear the contrast, more prog, same lineup, very good mix.
I've been a fan of this Voivod record probably since 1990. It's a great listen from start to finish. To me the are a lot like Rush,if Rush were a metal band.
I owned a Voivod album 'RRROOOAAAARRR' it was no where near as coherant as this 😂 The 1st song was Korgull the Exterminator followed by F..k off and Die 🤔😂 Came out in 1986 Trust me when I say it was nothing like this

War and Pain, Rrröööaaarrr, Killing Technology, Dimension Hatröss ('80s) - I'd say are sort of harcore punk influenced
Nothingface ('89)- Their most-loved album.
Negatron to Infiniti (mid 90s to 2009)- More industrial metal than before
Target Earth, Post Society (EP) (2013-2016) - A throwback to (in my opinion at least) Nothingface to The Outer Limits, but even more clean, even more progressive. I remember some of Post Society reminding me of Black Sabbath and other early metal
The Wake, Synchro Anarchy and Morgöth Tales (2018 - 2023) - I haven't actually listened to these yet, but I'm guessing they'd continue what Post Society started
Dude you’re hilarious. Great stuff. I saw Voivod once in Canberra. Pretty sure they were fantastic.
This band is great, and they influenced many other bands. They were really ahead of their times. Hope you do more of them, so much to discover.
Voivod is amazing! You should check out their track We Are Not Alone, next!
What a pleasant surprise to see a request for this song! This is my favorite track from Voivod, brilliant stuff!
I would be super interested to see you react to a more modern Voivod song. They've been going for over 35 years at this point and if anything have aged like a fine wine, despite surviving the death of their guitarist and main songwriter Piggy in around 2005. I recommend checking out the single from their most recent album. The track is called 'Planet Eaters' or also another good one is 'Obsolete Beings' from the album before that
you're going to LOVE voivod the deeper you get into their tracks.
Voivod - no you've done it😉!
🤜💥🤛
This is sick!
I took that left turn outta Albuquerque, blew right through Abiquiu and Tucumcari, and ended up kinda liking this. Touring with Soundgarden🤘
JASON NEWSTEAD played w/ them for a bit after leaving METALLICA-pretty sure they re still putting out new music
Never heard of them but def keen to here more!
context: this is 1989...this was so out there for the time, and then the follow up albums are so insane and different... this was the last "thrash" album for awhile... you have to do "Jack Luminous" from the 1994 album "The Outer Limits" - 17 minutes ! and it does not bore or seem long.. it's insane (think space metal/pink floyd metal). The vocals.... Snake was very unique... and yeah, they had such a distinct thing going on, by this point they were really polished in their own thing. I am still waiting for you to discover King's X :)
Oh boy, where to begin? Too much to say. Check out their track Synchro Anarchy. It's from their latest album and it's mint! ;)
Not the sort of thing I would normally listen to but I must admit, it was kind of fun.
Try some more - Dimension Hatross is a concept album with a storyline. 🙂
I love killing technology so much. My handwriting is inspired on the writing style of that album. Way too ahead of their time.
Away crushes!
Great artist too.
Great band. Unique. Deserve their place in history of thrash/prog. Andrew - listen to the album Nothingface. You won't regret it.
Straight from Montreal Canada 🇨🇦 🤘😎
YO!
Some recommends:
Heavy Raw Thrash: Korgull the Exterminator
Progy "weird" Thrash: X-Ray Mirror
Prog/"heavy rock?": Jack Luminous *highly recommend, Outer Limits underrated album
Modern/Current Voivod: Orb Confusion
Great band
Glad you loved VoiVod Andrew. The production on their recordings only got better after this. You have to do the epic track Jack Luminous from VoiVod. Huge, monster drumming from Michael in this song. He is a drumming machine!!!
If you liked this I suggest checking out some hard-core bands, particularly Black Flag and Minor Threat.
Im working him towards Hardcore … next up is probably NoMeansNo
Another album by the greatest thrash producer Harris Johns (Coroner, Pestilence, Kreator, Exhumer, Immolation)
GODS ! & their best album !
Yup I dig it!
Gods !
I can say this loudly enough:
MORE VOIVOD PLEASE!
Dimension Hatross is the greatest album of all time.
I really think Dimension Hatröss is easily one of the top 3 metal works (of any kind) ever, it's fucking advanced and unique, truly artistic.
THANK YOU!
This is what it's a bout. A genuine surprise.
Even if they were just influenced to say “I DO NOT want to do that” lol
Voivod’s first album came out in 1984, so is really the Canadian Metallica/Anthrax/Slayer/Megadeth.
Also, they’re another Canadian band…
SO GLAD you liked this, Andrew!
This is freaking awesome.
Total underground pick but with many hardcore fans chipping in. PERFECTION
Killing Technology is one of my favorite albums ever. Check it out!🤘🇨🇦
I owned a Voivod album
'RRROOOAAAARRR' it was no where near as coherant as this 😂
The 1st song was
Korgull the Exterminator followed by
F..k off and Die 🤔😂
Came out in 1986
Trust me when I say it was nothing like this
I bet!
Vive Voïvod!
Yo love it!
dimension hatross andy is one of the best albums you'll ever hear,no one sounds like voivod
Away is such a clean and tasty player 👌
Shannon Larkin of Godsmack, check him out 😉
I did a vid on him!
Excellent! Sorry I missed it, I will dig it up. Seen Godsmack 2 or 3 times. Thanks!
I hear some keith moon destroy approach here too
Voivod rules
The next few albums after DH have some great tracks in different styles.
You should Check Nemophila's Tamu Murata. Best Japanese Drummer in my opinion. Nemophila ist an all female Japanese Metal Band and they are absolutely amazing. Or listen to Luana Dametto from Crypta, brazilian all female Death Metal, this Girls are amazing too.
Greetz from Germany 🤟💀🤟☠️
Hypnosis by Nemophila is a fun one with that drum solo.
In my opinion, the Adabana drumming is also fabulous and worth seeing.
Love this Girls.🤟🖤🤟
Viva Le Voivod!!
If he likes this then Ved Buens Emde would be right up his valley
