  • This video is an introduction to the universal tool and cutter grinder. It explains how all the controls work and some hints on how to set it up. These grinders are clones of the original Deckel grinder and are sold around the world with different model numbers such as PP-U3, TM-U3, U2, U3 etc. They are all mostly the same and work the same way.

Hi and thanks for the introduction video on the TM-U3 Universal D-Bit Grinder as sold in Australia. I did notice that you did not cover the Index Head graduations fully, I have found that there are several settings which I found quiet confusing at first. with the Index Head lever located to the right "Long Slot" from 0 degrees on the dial it moves 7.5 degree increments for 180 degrees on the dial then hits a stop, jumps 30 degrees to 210 degrees on the dial then increments 7.5 degrees to 330 degrees on the dial where it hits another stop for another 30 degree jump to 0 degrees on the dial.
With the lndex Head leaver centered "Short Slot" you are able to swing the dial from 0 degrees to 180 degrees to a stop, if you pass the stop Index head jumps 30 degrees to 210 degrees on the dial and will rotate for 120 degrees to another stop with a reading of 330 degrees on the dial to another stop which in turn if passed will jump 30 degrees to 0 degrees on the dial.
Furthermore, just below the Index Head is a graduated scale that is used for setting cutting tool radii but no mention as to the scale used or incrementation on the machine or manual.
Also missing is the window to view the white dot that is critical to the initial set-up for D-Bit and Lathe tool grinding, it is mentioned in the Instructional Manual but is not provided, with no further explanation as to an alternate set-up procedure.

Very useful video - thanks. I am also getting this grinder in the next couple of weeks, it's also on order from machinery house. I plan to make some videos to show how I get on with it.

Nice overview of the D-bit grinder. I must however correct one thing! Diamond grinding wheels are for carbide/tungsten only! The "other" wheel (I presume you mean a white aluminum oxide grinding wheel) is to grind steel and high speed steel (HSS) tools. For example if you are mainly using this grinder to sharpen drill bits, you should never use diamond wheel (unless you have pretty expensive carbide drills)!!! The softer the material and the more Fe is in it (iron, all steels) the sooner you will destroy the diamond wheel. You should be able to resurrect the wheel once or twice with special stone to renew diamond wheels (it's cheap, but you need to look for it in a specialized shop), but don't, just don't grind steel with a diamond wheel!

When the wheel (spindle) is fully retracted, the hole should be in alignment. A vacuum system and a suitable mask, is strongly advised, as diamond dust once inhaled, will sit in your lungs forever. Thanks for the video!

I just ordered one of this exact model with C5 collets. Thanks for the info, many useful tips. Probably worth getting a CBN wheel for it as well.

Hi. Thank you for the video. it takes a great deal of torque to tighten my work head on the main shaft.
It is clean and I dont see any problems with it. any ideas?

Yes, it is quite helpful.....thank you Lord for the lack of background music....... I think I might be investing in one of these again as I had a Deckel before but sold it when I had no further use for it and someone else did.....things change and the need arises again.
One thing I noticed and that is you said 5C collets.....I assumed they were R8 as this was on another 2 year old U3 review.....is this a current upgrade to 5C?

Glad you found it useful. Yes, this grinder uses 5C collets which is an upgrade to R8 collets used on earlier D bit grinders.

@@ProjectsDownUnder Well, you're never too old to learn or update on something new........at least it comes with a set of collets as part of the package.....and the current price on OZ EBAY is A$1,050......the yearning for more tools is never ending.
I can never understand why anyone would want a full set of 5C with 1mm increments when in all reality you only need a few to cover the shank diam of cutters that are standard, the same applies to full sets of ER collets too........drilling with 5C or ER collets is like going to work on a building sight with a 3 piece morning suit whereas a keyless drill chuck is more universal and cost a lot less.
Edit.....just looked at Stefan Gotteswinter's video on the D bit grinding 4 facet drills so I would have to say that with that knowledge a complete set of 5C collets would be highly desirable after all.......he also uses smaller ER10 and ER8 chucks in the 5C collet for small drills etc.

With hindsight, and for all the original reasons I got rid of the Deckel I don't think I'll be investing in this device.....the main reason is it's too limited for general use with end mills etc.

There are actually 3 types of collets: R8 collets, 5C collets, and a special cutter grinder collets, the R8 collets was used in Deckel SO model, but the manufacturer of this machine in China changed to use special collets (which range is 3-16mm) and 5C collets (range 3-28mm), then there come up with 2 model : U2 and U3, they are same machine body, only in the collets and collets holder design are different.

    • @gangleweed
      @gangleweed 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@relymachinery8184 The Deckel SO model grinder I sold had Deckel collets that look like smaller R8 collets and haver a buttress thread on the end OD.
I see that they are selling the swing head part of the U2 D bit grinder on EBAY for A$380.....full machine is A$1,300.......I had in mind to get one and do a simple Deckel look alike build with a 1/3 HP 3,000 rpm 3 phase motor for specific tool grinding.....another iron in the fire etc.

what do you know about getting one of these that accepts 3-28mm collets. I believe they are available, but ALL from china. I'm in the USA ... looking for US seller. any ideas? Thanks.
