  • Ireland are drawn against England in Group 7 of Euro 1992 and despite making it through the qualification stage unbeaten, they fail to qualify after finishing a point behind England. In the game at Wembley between the two sides, Ireland battle to a creditable 1-1 draw with chances wasted. Lee Dixon put England 1-0 up in the 9th minute of play after his shot deflected off the leg of Steve Staunton and past Packie Bonner whilst Niall Quinn scored for Ireland in the 29th minute to make matters even after a spell of phenomenal Irish pressure.
Final line spoken by Charlton that is cut off: "There's not many people do that."

paul mcgrath played midfield that night and was absolutely sensational, the amount of running he got through on those dodgy knees was something else. i also remember dunphy was in flying form that night, saying graham taylor was having a nervous breakdown after he took off one of his three centre halfs to put on lee sharpe. this was ireland's best performance under charlton alongside the game against USSR in euro 88 but sadly we ended up drawing both games 1-1 when we deserved so much more

I remember this game vividly, as a seven year old. Seaman was nearly unbeatable that night, we battered England for most of the game, and he produced save after save.

I was at this and remember it well, despite the long ball game jack pressed his teams high on the pitch and sometimes it was very exciting and worked well , you always felt players were uncomfortable playing Ireland then , Ireland deserved to win that night and in my opinion we had our very best team around that period . Really feel they would have done well in 92. It’s a lot easier to qualify these days though

As an Englishman who remembers this time well, I'd have to agree. Ireland were much better than us throughout qualifying. England actually got gradually worse as the campaign went on. That being said, if you've ever heard the expression of a teams name being on the trophy, England's name was just on this group.
