Cooler than jittery Bowie, more stylish than pretentious Ferry and nicer than your average rock star.
He was a great singer and a gifted songwriter.
He painted from a broad pallette, and I think he liked the fact he couldn't be pinned down to one style.
    Sadly missed.

Class act; decent and humble. During college, I worked as a "red shirt" handling concert security needs. In late 1976, handled dressing room security for Palmer's Boston concert. No entourage, other than the driver and an A&R rep who was with him. The most unassuming rock star I ever met, on par with James Taylor. No drama, just pure class.

Every interview I've ever heard with Robert Palmer has been totally worth listening to. He was really as genuine as they come. These interviews are stunning and they never get old. My husband and business partner had the honor of touring with Robert Palmer during the promotion of Don't Explain, released in 1990. He was very kind, a true gentleman with so much class. I was already a huge fan dating back to Johnny & Mary, Clues from 1980, so I totally flipped out when we got the word that he wanted Terrance's band to go on tour with him for a month in 1991, in the US. We were devastated when he died and still miss him, but still listen to his music all the time.

Robert Palmer was an anomaly, an enigma in the music industry. He was loved and and admired, I don't think he was given enough credit to his craft. He definitely had a stand-alone style. A style that was emulated by numerous artists. He did it first really. I wonder what he would be up to now, what a loss. He is in every corner of my youth, along with Micheal Hutchence.

I thought it was so weird how the interviewer asked Mr Palmer not to smoke and he immediately put out the cigarette. I've never seen that. Usually when a musician lights up during an interview no one says anything.Robert Palmer is such a class act

    • @moodylicious
      @moodylicious 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

but i think he REALLY bristled at that.
You're right. What was the big deal about putting out the cigarette?
You best believe they wouldn't DARE do that in the next interview after Riptide debuts!
ya see the way he jettisoned that cig down to the floor?
And then you watch him gaining control of his thoughts.
I think smoking calmed his nerves and gave him something to do with his hands.

Wondering how he made it to 54. That being said he was beautiful and genuine. Lived hard, died too young, left an impeccable mark.

The sweetness you can see, a boyish smirk with a shimmer of sensuality. Michael Hutchence gave me the same vibe. Both beautiful men, big talent and taken far too early. Robert’s body of work is prolific and most of the good stuff no one has ever heard, unless they get down into the weeds of Blues and Soul. I keep Robert’s music in my rotation and on shuffle and regret never knowing any music other than what was given to me on MTV before he passed.

Im in my 40's, during this period 1985 I was a teen, all the facts about smoking was just beginning no warnings on cigarettes back then. I chose to smoke and Marlboro was $1.25 pack. The statistics were not in and it was pleasurable to smoke these Nicotine sticks especially with spirits. So Palmer was no doubt a victim of BIG TOBACCO. I stopped in the 90's, But I must say most of the 80's I enjoyed every cigarette I smoked. RIP Robert Palmer.

I was aware of the dangers of smoking as a kid in the 70's. TV ads were banned in 1970. But yeah that's probably what got him. Not "big tobacco" but his choice to smoke. Even today people still choose to smoke and chew tobacco.

He was just fabulous. He had it all. I detected a bit of embarrassment at being asked to stop smoking. I can't stand that smell, & it KILLED this gorgeous man. But, I wanted to Nurse him when he looked uncomfortable.

Fantastic singer , songwriter, saw him live in Leicester once . Taken far too young RIP. Spoke to him briefly once after that Leicester gig, he said he was a songwriter and not a singer .

Thank you for this posting. I'm a singer, and it was always such a pleasure (and challenge) to sing his songs. I could never come close to his performances, but that's okay cause he's the original. And I miss him.

I love watching interviews with him. He’s a relaxing guy.
I also like how he was so unrockstar like. He has said he rather relax at home reading a good book than being out all night on the town. He was the quintessential proper English Gentleman.

Saw Robert at the Wembley Arena in the early 1990`s, so good...superb. The place was rocking
at the foundations during "Johnny and Mary"..............unforgettable. So wish you were still with

+Laura Kenney The damn camera man obviously hated Palmer. 1st, the camera guy told him to turn the cig off to make him more nervous. Then he kept zooming in on his face every time Palmer wasn't talking to catch any nervous twitches.

+ExclusiveLM No, I'm convinced it was a woman... all those close ups! His gorgeousness aside, this is such an interesting insight into his musical influences, including references to Radio Caroline which was a huge factor in my teens when it was anchored off the coast of Essex. How nice to know he was listening to it the same time as me!!
