Maybe, but the Mercedes was worn out and never felt the same about South Carolina. Meanwhile, the Clemson fans watched in horror as the Gamecocks were hiring big name coaches like Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier. At the same time Clemson was hiring washed up coaches sons like Tommy Bowden, and finally some clown nobody ever heard of named Dabo Swinney. I and half the fans were nearly in revolt after they failed to fire him after going 6-7 in his 2nd full year. I wanted everybody at Clemson fired and thought Clemson might never again beat the Gamecocks. Little did I know, Dabo was to become our best coach ever. Clemson had showed me and other fans were idiots. The Gamecocks were hiring past legends that never brought their past glory with them. Clemson was hiring coaches we, nor anyone else ever heard of except Dabo. Eventually his belief, made us fans believe too.

As someone who was a freshman in 2010 and was at the Alabama game, watching the highlights from those years gives me chills and tons of excitement. I'm very optimistic about coach Beamer, I think the press conference showed how excited he is to try and bring that culture back to Columbia.

      @sarge1231 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@michaelschaefer1904 So did Dabo....coaches with National Championship trophies often just look to wind down their career. Dabo felt he had something to prove. Dabo has a lot in common with Beamer. Probably the best coaching hire ever for the Gamecocks, as long as they give him enough time to get his recruits in and starting. Often, programs expect instant results these days. Carolina needs a full rebuild though, not just a quarterback or running back. I hope the fans of the Gamecocks have some patience. Year 4 is when big improvements should show...maybe even year 3. I actually want them to be competitive with Clemson. I still want Clemson to win close games against a ranked Gamecock team. Given time, Beamer is the kind of coach that can get them there. It will take time.

As a fan and a student who was at USC during the transition from Spurrier to Muchamp I think you hit a lot of good points. One thing I will mention that you didn’t really touch on was the muschamp contract extension. He received the dumbest contract extension after having one 9 win season. After his results at Florida and shaky first year many people thought the contract extension was offered too early. It was the opinion of a lot of people that Will was a placeholder. It was no secret we had our hearts set on Kirby Smart and it didn’t play out for us. So Will was sort of a back up. And the contract extension locked us in on a coach that ended up costing the team a ton of money and the end result was 7 wins, 4 wins, 2 wins and a 13+ million buy out

That golden era by the Gamecocks in the early 2010s is the exception, and not the norm for Gamecock football. South Carolina high school football during that time was probably at it’s peak and the Gamecocks landed the state’s Mr. Football 3 times in a row who were also top national recruits in Gilmore, Lattimore, and Clowney. Teams like Byrnes, Dorman, South Pointe, Berkeley were some of the country’s best teams. Gamecocks benefited from a very talented pool of players from the state at that time.
Also, Spurrier lack in recruiting late in his tenure is a reason for the downfall. He stop actively recruiting high school underclassmen and SC Mr. Football Shaq Roland left the program while he was there.

I am a USC (yes we were USC before California was a state) grad but I was a fan long before I went to college there. I was raised in Cola and went to my first game against Wake Forest in the late 60's.
Joe Morrison was the most well known coach we ever had before Holtz and then Spurrier. We have a great fanbase and they love their football. Hiring a new coach is always kind of a crapshoot. Who in the world woulda guessed Dabo was a good choice to replace Bowden. Not me. A WR coach who had never been a head coach before. His first few years were nothing special, but they stuck with him, I assume because he was building a solid culture from the inside out and building his recruiting. Beamer is known to be an excellent recruiter. His dad built a fantastic culture at Va Tech, so he has seen that kind of program built from within. I think he is worth the chance and it doesn't hurt that he just came from Oklahoma where they know a little something about winning culture. I am behind Shane Beamer 100% give him a chance to put together a staff and see if that winning culture can be built.

When I read your title I was first annoyed. But when I watched your TH-cam Video I couldn't disagree with your Perspective.
I also learned some things. I have been a loyal fan for decades. You were respectful and informative.
Only thing I disagree with is the Million Dollar Statue is a Gamecock and not a chicken.
A Gamecock is Male Rooster that Has Been Trained to Mame or Kill its Male Rooster Opponent.
Gamecock fighting was a ruthless horrible sport where competitors and fans took bets on which Gamecock would win.
The reason I mention this is because of the Symbolisim that Gamecocks would many times fight to his death.
Meaning Gamecocks never Give up or Quit. They endure to the end.
The Symbolism of this is What many and Most Gamecock Fans are Proud of.

Spurrier didn't seem to interested in keeping his staff together (many of them got out) and wasn't too interested in replacing them with excellent recruiters. It's not a coincidence that the recruiting fell off once a lot of those coaches left. It's also not a coincidence that when those recruiters were on staff that the program enjoyed an excellent run under Spurrier relative to his 35-28 start.
Look at how the program faltered when he lost his good coaches. Bad hired coaches to replace them.

Very interesting comments. In the Holtz era, overlooking the excesses of 22 Derek Watson led to his downfall and loss of the team. For Spurrier, his comments about only coaching a couple of more years killed his recruiting. The arrogance of a coaching staff member alienated the HS coaches. He, also, lost the team. Muschamp was a mistake from the beginning. Tanner learned and acted more quickly this time when things became obvious. Shane Beamer is an excellent candidate who can unite the players, fans, and donors. I look for very good things in a couple of years and hope we are paying him a ton of money to keep him here in about three years. Go Gamecocks!

Injuries. It just seems like Carolina has always had a ton of injuries every year. So three games in to any season over the past decade, we start hearing, “Gamecocks have been disseminated by injuries.” I think that has played a big part in the downturn.
Also hoping that the new “high scoring offenses” paradigm in college football doesn’t totally take away the defensive emphasis of the SEC. Carolina had some great defenses those years you’re talking about. Loved watching them play.
