    The generosity of Ted never ceases to amaze me, what a genuinely nice guy, who just genuinely loved playing and teaching. It really comes through in the way he speaks.

    Ted offers to personally wire a special circuit to get the guitar sounding better and the guy doesn’t even hear it

    Ted's guest mentions Ed Bickert, who was one of Ted's influences. I heard Bickert at a little jazz fest in New Brunswick, Canada back in the 60s. I'll never forget it. He really opened my ears. Later I saw him playing some blah function (for the Canadian Prime Minister) in Toronto, just comping like any guy in a dance band. What a contrast! That first listen was magic though.

    @5:35 That's Ed Bickert on 'Just Squeeze Me' off of 'Pure Desmond' LP . The father of the Tele in jazz.

    How generous - I've had several guitar teachers in my life and never did one offer to give me a pack of strings, let alone rewire my guitar..

    So cool to hear Ted's thoughts on the G&L as well as strings. I buy six sets of strings at a time and wrap two rubber bands around them just like that also...lol!

    @waldo2384 I gotta check that out. Every guitar is like playing a different instrument. Each has different tonal properties to bring to that musical table, so to speak. That's why I love listening to Frisell's work on his Tele, it works because he realizes that sound in his head. Ted talks about that jangle, an archtop doesn't give you that and I say that as an avid archtop player myself.

    Wished he had talked about the guitar more. I own a G&L ASAT Special Deluxe and really like it. I play blues on it and it works really well for that type of music as well.

    • @GlennMichaelThompson
      @GlennMichaelThompson 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ted was offering to add a mod to the tone control... would've liked to hear about that. I've the same guitar w/ the MFD pickups; very versatile (imo), great for blues, rock, funk, and jazz (especially w/ thicker strings as Ted suggests).

  • @mikeaustin4138
    @mikeaustin4138 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have almost this exact same guitar. I play Clapton, Allman, Garcia type music and this guitar is great for that as well.

    Yeah, I guess it is an eval of a G&L... but its more the topic of strings... the fellow doesn't shut up long enough to let Ted make any decisive points... somebody below said the student is trying to impress Ted that he knows stuff... take some advice from the old Shaolin monk... student comes to the monk and tells the monk all of the punches and kicks he knows... student goes home... student comes back the next day, tells the monk about all the punches and kicks he knows... monk still does not show the student anything new... the third day the student comes back and asks the monk why he does not teach him anything new... the monk tells him to come back another day with an empty cup... because his cup is so full, he can not put anything new in it... Sifu Ted even looks a bit perturbed at the fellow... "lessons over"..... I think the fellow was even a bit disrespectful of Ted... especially by bringing him this guitar to "evaluate"... so much more meaningful and deep things could have been talked about during a lesson other than your latest gear addiction, dude... you missed it completely... oh to have even 6 more minutes with this awesome man...

  • @pickinstone
    @pickinstone 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @waldo2384 was Bickert the first guy to bring the tele into jazz with the big guns. He plays that tele like a 50,000 archtop.

  • @esdenaze

    4:36 I don't care what you name it, jazz or what not, because this is not the 'boring' jazz you hear 97% of the time. His playing is constantly going to audial climax. So many people answer the question: "Who is your favourite guitarist?" with hendrix. I hope they someday ask me so I can say Ted Greene just to see their pupils dilate when I let them hear a track of his. I can really say I found someone inspiring. Is there actually anything bad about this guy? Other then being constantly baffled?

    Ted makes reference to his hands hurting as a reason for going to lighter strings around 3:00. I’ve seen in separate vids (I believe it was the “baroque improv” playlist) where Ted speaks of his hands cramping if he keeps playing for too long, and in still other videos he shakes his hand out when he plays.
    Does anybody know if he had a diagnosed hand issue?

    That G&L has the bib blocky high field coil pick ups. I tried one with standard Fender sized pick ups and said PASS! Someone put a blade bridge in it, and I thought it muddied up the whole guitar. As for strings, I hate anodized aluminum ball ends. I am not so stupid I need color coding, and I solder my ball ends for Kahler & Strat trems. Anodized aluminum wont solder. I use everything from 9-42s to 13s on electrics. Some of my electrics are converted F hole arch tops& I use heavy wG flat Ws.

    • @candlestickproductions6950
      @candlestickproductions6950 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Its not a disaster... it was piled with books, chord charts, all kinds oif stuff that presented his genius. One man's disaster is another man's loving Sifu of music... with what he could do on a guitar, he surrounded himself with pages and pages of the same... I've often thought that his filing cabinet that kept all of his Ted Sheets he'd hand out during lessons should be in the Smithsonian Institution...
