It was finally on Netflix and I got to watch it today...still chilled to my bones. I knew what was coming but still kept clinging to a sliver of hope that the fate of these lovable characters would turn out differently. Also, can't believe Rinku is only 15! This girl is so ridiculously talented.

    Undoubtedly Sairat is a masterpiece.
Not only is it a brutal & spine-chilling look at the abhorent caste divide in India, it is also an actutely observed tale of first love, human relationships & how life makes you grow up too fast.
The beautiful symphonic score is just brilliant and elevates the movie to the fell of an epic shakespearen tragedy which is still rooted in reality.
Sairat gets incredibly massy at times and yet still manages to be incredibly well written.
    A masterpiece.

+Mahesh Babu. I'm not saying that all bwood movies are shit, but did you see what happened with those good movies? They flopped and couldnt earn any penny at the box office. Aligarh only earned only 2 crores being a good film whereas housefull hss already earned 55 crores. The differnece is only commercial movies are making profit in bollywood and art films are dying out. And in marathi cinemas, both commercial and art movies get tremendous response from the local maharashtrian audience. I think the difference here is audience.

yes... even though its sad but its true :/ i think the main problem is that the ppl don't consider these movies as Theater Movies .... most of them prefer to see this kind of movies in TV or pirated ....its often good movies wch are being pirated most .... we are mostly stealing from the poor :/ hope it slowly changes :)

Thank you Anupama for bringing to people's attention to such a great film! :) keep up the good work. it would be great if you could keep doing such pieces in the future. Not only new films, but older ones too could be your subject. Being kind of disappointed in mainstream bollywood over the past decade (you know, the kind of movies like dhoom2, housefull series, don2, chennai express, desi boys, and many many many more like them), I mostly watch only hollywood fare. This is the first regional cinema movie i watched that i felt was comparable to hollywood movies in terms of its direction, cinematography, screenplay and music. Barring its box office collections which are lower than bollywood owing to its regional constraints, it has most bollywood fare by a huge margin in all other aspects i feel. Sairat is now one of my favourite movies! :D

Dude both are different in their own ways as he said one is more raw, rustic, completely realistic with no songs, slo-Mo etc while other is made to look a little like Bollywood movie so that it's beautiful msg can reach wider audience

I was watching an interview that Amitabh Bachchan did where he stated that he did all those masala films he did because they offered a sense of escapism to the people who watched them, they let people leave their frustrated lives behind for a while.
It's interesting how Nagaraj Manjule is saying the same thing but taking it in a different manner. He said that he was a big Amitabh fan and that sense of escapism left him dissatisfied with real life.
What I find interesting is the different and legible take take on the same subject matter by people who are good at expressing.

I really wish Film Companion showcases more regional films and it shouldn't take a massive blockbuster like Sairat or Baahubali to do so. I mean going to Cannes or other international film festivals and showcasing western films are all great but many people are already doing that and it's probably not the best way you can differentiate yourself. Regional films have no voice beyond their regions and a show like yours can bring much more awareness to these great creations even before they become the hits they are today. There is so much happening in Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi, Kannada and Bengali films to name a few. I know it's impossible to showcase them all, but it shouldn't be a big effort to showcase gems. Hope you you consider this suggestion.

Thanks for writing Prathiban. I absolutely agree that we must cover regional films more. I think there is so much wonderful work happening there. I don’t know enough about these cinemas to do insightful reviews but will do my best to showcase these films - Anupama.

Bollywood actors can never replace the innocence ,charm and beauty of Aakash and Rinku .....all the bollywood actors look same and do everything before they get into a relationship. What Sairat depicted can never be duplicated. Bekar remake banaya.
