- Best pastries in Polebridge, Montana and the worst GDMBR road section I've ever bikepacked on!
This is DAY 20 of my first bikepacking learn-as-I-go adventure!
In this episode I continue on the GDMBR from Red Meadow Lake to Tochuck Campground in the wilderness. I go out of my way to Polebridge, MT to snag some of their famous pastries! Once back on the Great Divide I struggle with the terrible road conditions, get lost adding 9 miles to my day, ride alongside a bear and finally reach camp thirsty and exhausted.

I am a 63 year old Arizona guy that did my first tour when I was a 17 yr old kid in 1976. A buddy and I rode Canada to Mexico on the PCH, when not many were doing such things. We had the time of our lives. While I have been fortunate enough to have had many different types of adventures in my life, I keep coming back to bikepacking. I did a trip in 2019 on the Idaho Hot Springs Loop, which is where your tour began I think, so I am enjoying your coverage. Cheers to future adventures for us both Naomi!

@@HumanontheLoose , best part is I had my ass handed to me by two 70 yr old guys and one 75 yr old that were riding with me! 😂 they were roadies that did the mileage regularly and got up those passes without a problem. Gives me something to shoot for!

@@HumanontheLoose Yes, generally, it is safe. At the same time this is a dangerous and uncertain world. Follow your intuition when it comes to people. Nature Gave you intuition for a reason.

I should tell you that I'm deaf -- I can't hear -- so I depend on TH-cam's captioning feature to know what you are saying. I'm married and do have kids and grandchildren and I'm very happy about that. I do want to enjoy bicycling adventures that are similar to yours. I think there is so much that I can learn from you.

I think similar. I never truly grew up into the older person I should be because I didn't have kids PLUS because I work around younger adults all day long that it makes me feel like I am still 25. Until they remind me that I am not. Please grab me a pastry as well !

On the turn you missed I noticed that on the sign saying "Tuchuck" it did have the campground abv. "CG" after the name Tuchuck.
HA!! Yep - just zoomed in! That’s my newbie mistake! See you just taught me something as my brain never even paid attention to the two letters. I’d only seen tent/triangles or the word spelled out. BUT - had I looked at the name on the map instead of focusing on the little triangle Tuchuck would’ve meant something to me but it didn’t so my brain didn’t follow the word to even see the CG.

Love Polebridge. The bakery is great but the Salon is the BOMB. I went in and didn't leave for hours, too much FUN !!!

Because Im technologically inept I couldn’t find your flog about Whitebird and the trestles……I actually walked across the trestle over your right shoulder and we share the experience of flying down Whitebird on the white fog line……I was traveling 42 mph when I noticed how sharp the lava shards were and how thin my tires were !! Prior the flying down the new grade I rode up the old grade’s switchbacks !! Love your vlogs…….twitterpated kiddo !! Gail🤩😎

@@HumanontheLoose Actually, I have been getting together some gear to take with me. I have this small one person ultralight weight tent. I have some other stuff, you know the necessities, clothing that sort of thing. I have the bicycle and the panniers. Now if this unprecedented warm winter holds, that might make it better. I have to wait until after 11 January. My sister Diana is coming down from New York. She is flying down on January 3 and staying until the 11th. It has been years since I saw her last so I want to be here.
Nothing like modern technology and you still get lost. Happened to me last month on a mtn bike ride in an area that I had ridden before. My GPS, phone, and another app showed a forestry road that didn't exist.....believe me, I spent nearly 45 minutes riding up and down the road looking for that p.o.s. road and all that I found was an obscure trail. I took it and it was quite the "adventure" to say the least. Regardless, the views were stunning and I ended up crossing paths w/ a really nice couple from Texas riding horses
HA!! I had your experience as well on a local MTB ride in the Boise mountains and it was a solid line! After an hour of busting trail (on the line) I had to backtrack then hitch a ride on an ATV when on my return the guy noticed I had to sit down on the side of the road every 10min. because I was physically depleted. I would have preferred your outcome! 😀👏

WAS looking for bike rides in MT, this one sounds too intense for this old guy! Love Pole Bridge and the bakery, sent cards from the little Post Office. 26 years ago last month, going back in 4 years with that same sweet lady. Was in a Jeep last time, the road was bumpy then too.....
Great vid, you are a blast, especially when you have an oops. Would it be worthwhile to program your tracks of the route into a small Garmin GPS that's mounted on the handlebars? We used them for long Enduro rides and they work great from keeping on the right road.
What your sleeping on makes all the difference.You need thick insulation.Also sheltered spot out of wind against a wind barrier trees ect.A thicker woolly sleep hat aswel 👌🇬🇧
You are correct! My sleeping pad is a good one rated 3.4 and packable for a bike. No space for a thicker hat and camp spots with tree protection were taken. My lesson…out of a 51 day trip I probably froze my ass off a total of four nights. So that’s fine.
@@HumanontheLoose yes but you shouldn’t have to suffer from the cold .Its important that you can sleep warm and comfortable.So your fresh the next day.Hope you have a sleeping bag inlet aswel as they can add a few degrees for your warmth aswel.late high fat meals help aswel

Another great episode! Loved it! :) Hey, quick question- I think I mentioned a few weeks back that I am looking to replace my current gravel bike... and the Salsa Cutthroat is on my short list. One of the things I like about it is that Salsa makes a custom frame bag for it for bikepacking. It's the only company I know that makes both the bike and the bag... just curious why you didn't go with the Salsa frame bag? Is there something I should know? (no hurry on answer- just asking is all). Looking forward to more of your adventures! :)

Ah the Northern Rockies, where you can have three seasons in one trip thru. Some of my most interesting women friends are those who chose not marriage and children. I on the other hand in periods outside marriage, my 20s and now 60s find myself without full time adult supervision (grins) One of problems with flatter mountain roads is not getting out of a bad formation. Then the native materials used in the construction of the road can really make the dirt road suck.

What was the actual month/date you did this route? Asking because of the flowers there and temps.

I started following on this year’s trip (2022), so I’m catching up on your previous videos. Funny, I looked up Tuchuck Campground on Google maps, and there is a picture of Mark the Deer from July 2016. Mark is a doe by the way… So there’s that 🫤
