Welcome to part 10 of the Linocut printmaking tutorial series! This series is an introduction to linocut printmaking, from start to finish. In this video we are going to combine some mixed media to the final print, as well as quickly cover a few resources

In this series, I'm trying to cover linocut printmaking for folks with and without access to a press. Not having a full print studio should not be a reason to skip printmaking! You can simply print by hand using a spoon, Baren, or any other smooth object!

Great series! I have used the Saf-T-Kut printmaking material with my elementary students for many years. I have to say that I am hooked! Works very well, and not as difficult to carve. I make lino print Christmas cards every year.. Thanks for the great ideas and the very thorough videos! They are definitely a great resource for anyone that is going to lino print for the first time.. and even those that have done it a while!

Thank you so much for this series, I am so glad I happened upon it. I have never tried Linocut printmaking, but I am excited to try! I am especially intrigued with adding watercolor and was wondering if hot press watercolor paper would work because it is smooth.

I’m so glad you are enjoying the series! It’s typically easier to print with a thinner paper when doing it without a press, but likely that won’t hold up to watercolors too well. But a thinner hot pressed watercolor paper might work ok or a mixed media type paper, as long as you can get a good enough impression from the print onto it! Good luck!

Thanks for this awesome series ! Very complete and informative, I learned a lot ! I did very few tests with linocut, but I really like the technique and woul love to do more of it so after watching all these video I'll certainly go buy a few linoleum boards and find time to carve. Also find something to sharpen my tools because I don't have that and if it's like cooking knives it needs to always be ready to cut !

Thanks for this series but I just wanted to know what you think would be better with softcut lino (rubbery) : Transfer paper or carbon to trace it onto the block.

I've had good luck with transfer paper, but I'd hate to steer you wrong. You might be able to buy a small pack to use as a test, and see what works best.

I would like to know where the differences are between usual linolium and soft linolium. It seems that the soft one is easyier to carve but the bits stick longer. Do you have any experiences with different types of linolium?

You may already have your answers by now but if not.... the soft lino's (or synthetic blocks) are difficult to print with in any kind of press. What happens is they squish down and you end up with a double image or blurred lines. Not too bad for hand burnishing, though. The "real" lino is also capable of holding a lot of thin detail, which a lot of artists strive for. Hope that helps.
