Schwartz & Shapiro are the most commonly recognized Jewish names, but Cohen & Levine (which was also my Grandmother's maiden name before she married my Grandfather) is also part of my family name; are also VERY common Jewish surnames.
Funny thing about Jewish names: so "Schaeffer" is actually my family's "Ellis Island" anglicized name. It's actually "Sphaznikov" but they couldn't pronounce the Russian surname when my Grandfather came to NYC from Moscow.

Again, one can Only be Jewish through their Mother being Jewish. It cannot be inherited through their father. But if their mother was Jewish and their father was not, they would Still be Jewish. One is ONLY Jewish if their mother is Jewish. And her mother and so on. Even if one decides to convert OUT of the religion, per Halacha (Jewish law), you are STILL Jewish. I do not think it is the religion that is important as being Jewish, it is the life experience that matters. My husband's family was Jewish in Dortmund in the early 1900, they had a business until the day of the burning of the Synagoge and persecution of Jews, they moved East to Poland, well wrong move considering what followed. Jews were persecuted by the Nazi regime and later in 1967 anybody with a Ashkenazy surname was persecuted by the Polish communist regime, regardless if you identified as Jewish or not.

Thank you for saying what I was going to say. It does matter which side is Jewish if you want to attend a Temple. My father was a Russian Jew and when I went to a Temple, I was told that if I wanted to join, I would have to take all of the same conversion courses that a non-Jew would have to take, because my mother was not Jewish, which made me not Jewish in their eyes.
