I don’t think there ever were two personalities. I think Mr. Hyde was always the real person and Dr. Jekyll was the fake personality he created to fit into societal norms. I think the story is about a guy who desires to do things that society will not accept, and so he comes up with a way to do the things he wants to do anonymously so he can do them without fear of social judgment. I think that the reason it becomes harder for him to transform back into Jekyll as the story goes on is that, as he indulges more and more in who he truly is(Mr. Hyde), it becomes more difficult for him to keep up the facade(Dr. Jekyll). When he chooses to commit suicide at the end, it’s not because there’s some small remnant of his “good side” left that manages to make the “bad side” kill himself. He never had more than one personality. He kills himself because he realizes he can no longer hide who he truly is from the world, and he cannot deal with the consequences of the world knowing who he truly is. When his body is found, the body is Mr. Hyde wearing Dr. Jekyll’s clothes, indicating that Mr. Hyde was the person and Dr. Jekyll was the disguise.

Also at 8:50 you say that Jekyll has enough power left to kill himself and you associate throughout the video that Jekyll is meant to be the embodiment of Good. Yet suicide is quite cowardly and thus could this not show the selfish and 'sly' nature of Jekyll as he would much rather kill himself and escape any consequences of his decisions. (his selfishness can also be seen throughout Chapter 10 where he repeatedly tries to disassociate himself from blame - 'I am the chief of suffers also')

    • @DrAidan

Damandeep. That is an extremely good observation. In this story Jekyll can be seen attempting to isolate the 'good' part of him from the 'bad' side (represented by Hyde). But, as you say, the problem he faces at the end of the story is that he cannot escape the consequences of his actions as Hyde. The reality is that the drugs have run out and he will be condemned to remain as Hyde forever. So you are right, whilst he TRIED to be good as Jekyll, he does have to resort to killing himself when he turns into Hyde for the final time - and this can be seen as cowardly and a way of avoiding the consequences of his actions. But there may be another possibility worth considering. Suicide (now that he is effectively Jekyll WITHIN Hyde) also allows him to prevent Hyde from murdering more people - because undoubtedly the evil HYDE would grow stronger and stronger in the future. What is so fascinating about this story is that whilst your point about cowardice/slyness/selfisness is correct, there may also be a way of seeing the suicide as a redeeming quality, in that he takes action to eliminate his evil side forever. I hope this is a useful answer and thanks again for raising this distinction - a really interesting thought.

@@DrAidan I see what you're saying, but, lets say for the arguments sake Hyde is "pure evil" which I completely disagree with, Jekyll knows Hyde is "bad" but still continues to take the potion he created to transform himself and commit evil. Even after Hyde kills the "innocent" Carew, he forges a letter to save his own neck.

FINALLY. Someone who actually interprets specific pieces of dialogue and how they represent the overarching essence of the book. Instead of the infinite amount of videos that just regurgitate the same generalizations about the themes of the book after giving five minutes of backstory about the authors life and times smh.

came here bcz im searching about the lyrics of a song - "Jekyll" . It really gave goosebumps when first time i read them. it is like a dialogue among two identity i think. i drop it here
    "This uncertain ending,
the time that got tangled up
When it becomes filled with those doubts piling up
That gaze that wavers with a planned falsehood
Those secrets that were hidden are painted with red
    That stopped gaze,
    I lost my path
    There is no answer,
hold me captive within the silence The other self that is hidden inside me Above the surface,
    chasin’,
    choke my breath
Got one shot, someone define me
It’s do or die for me
Just one, I only need myself inside of me
    It’s coming, get ready
Your voice that cries out in my head
A terrible night is coming (Warning)
When it stirs inside of me like a nightmare
Cut it out without hesitation (Warning)
Why are you pushing me out,
I’m already inside you I control myself Oh my my, it can’t be hidden
Without going further, same for me
I shut you down, there is no place for you
Even if I block my ears,
I can still hear your endless whispers You’re making me go insane, from inside me
It feels like a dream (Wake Up)
This place that is deep under, even if you escape
You who is an existence that drives me to the brink of insanity
The deep blue dawn after waiting the entire night
    If you falter, shakin’,
    I will swallow you up
    I control myself
The distant night, this dangerous moment
The moonlight that brushed by faintly The shadows cast over it Find those displaced pieces of memories Wandering on this night,
I will break away from you now
    Break out!
When it stirs inside of me like a nightmare
    Cut it out without hesitation
Why are you pushing me out,
I’m already inside you I control myself
    Peace out"
i loved your video, it made the book for me more clear thanks

tysm great anaylsis! for whole text essays, we are expected to use a wide range of evidence from throuhout the play. do you thinbk we would be marked down if the majority of this evidence was from chapter 10?

My view would be that it would be best if you are able to draw on quotes from the book as a whole so that you can illustrate how imagery and themes are developed throughout the story.

There is a literary precursor of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Namely, the novel, The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner by James Hogg; an earlier Scottish writer. It concerns a staunch Calvinist, Robert Wringhim, who, under the influence and persuasion of a sinister and mysterious stranger, called Gil-Martin, believes that he is saved and one of the elect, and is justified in murdering people who he believes have been damned by God. Critics have speculated that the stranger, Gil-Martin, might be the devil, or even, more plausibly, another, darker manifestation of Mr. Wringhim's personality, like Mr. Hyde, in Stevenson's novel. The novel didn't have much success at the time of its publication, but has since become a literary classic, with writers like Andre Gide expressing how much they were impressed by it. It has been described as an early modern crime novel, though written from the viewpoint of the criminal, rather than a detective. Stevenson is on record as having read and admired the novel; and it might also have been an influence on him in creating that famous work. You might be interested to know that I have written a comic take on Jekyll and Hyde, entitled, A Serpent in Eden, that can be seen at the website: www.inkitt.com/stories/horror/183677
