you know how you said the spring might go flying across the room? well, that happened. fuck I mustve spent 20 solid minutes looking for that damn thing. hahahah
I started playing guitar in the late 70’s & hit my stride all through the 80’s. I seam to remember the guitar community was more of a one upsmsnship & I know something that you don’t!! Hahaha... than a collaborative of any type. Today though it seams the true innovators & geniuses are the first to offer help & advice to everyone. With gear being as good as it is, at the lowest prices ever. & the ability to reach out to so many giant intellects in the field, this is the best time to be a guitar 🎸 enthusiast of any manor.
So I finally Bought a JB for the bridge of my Ibanez... Came with diagram but youtube is So much easier than reading...hehe So Here I am!! Wish me luck :D
I can't believe how easy this is. I'm going to change mine myself for the first time and unless it somehow goes horribly wrong, I'll never pay someone else to do this again. Thanks for the clear instructions.
Wow. Good guy Seymour Duncan. Not only, they make great pickups, they make also make great instructional videos where the narrator (who has a the smoothest voice I've ever heard) acknowledges that you might be using pickups from other manufacturers... and doesn't even care !
If anyone out there is a complete novice and debating on trying to solder a pickup, rest assured that even a total bozo like me was completely successful on the first try thanks to following the steps n this most excellent video. Thanks to the Seymour Duncan guys for doing this for us.
Working on a guitar is really fun and frustrating. The hardest part is soldering the pickups. I put new Gibson Classic tuners on my Epiphone Les Paul instead of Grovers and had to drill new holes which was easy and ok. Then for the new pickups I put Seymour Duncan Alnico II Slash Pro pickups. The guitar looks great I really like it. Just remember your soldering iron has to be hot as hell and use the thin solder not the thick one unless you have like a 45 watt solder which is extremely hot. But if its a 30 watt use thin solder. Just a warning to all the people who want to do it by themselves. Good Luck:)
Is this a "How-To" pickup replacement video, or a "How-To" "How-To Video" video? Yes-the answer is Yes. The Bob Ross of guitar mods/repairs. :-) Absolutely superb. Thank you!
i opened up my guitar today and saw all the soldering so much more complicated than i was hoping it would be. but thanks to you i can do it with ease. great video
Now that I am working in my parents music store doing the electric setups, I am getting more and more requests for doing electronics. Never having done anything with pickups for the last 20 years, I guess I'll have to do some refresher stuff. Great video :)
Thank you for posting this. I've never changed pickups before and after watching this I first did a guitar with just a humbucker and volume to a HSH, 1 tone, 1 volume, 5 way switch and a coil tap. Really great stuff!
Very useful video. I've always been worried about soldering inside my guitars as I'm not experienced with that kind of thing, but this video is very helpful.
wow awesome i didnt even know the seymour duncan site has all that info its pretty cool that there tech support will help you through a problem also thanks for the great video
Thanks Seymour Duncan! I just ordered some Slash seymour duncans for one of my les pauls to use as a backup for my Slash signature les paul, waiting for them to arrive they should be here in the next couple of days so i am just learning how to wire a pickup as this is my first time wiring pickups, i have experience wiring pedals and switches and input jacks etc but never a pickup, i will post my progress after the installation thanks again! :D
Thanks again Seymour! It worked perfectly first time. Although the guitars wiring was a bit of a mess from the previous owner i rewired it all neatly again with the addition of the new pickups and they work better than expected!! Great service i cannot thank you enough :)
Love how he starts off won't take much longer then changing your guitar strings than goes on showing 20 different tools you'll need just to do it haha but thanks for the help hopefully one day I could fix a whole guitar haha great video bro!!! Thanks!
Great video! The only tip I'd add is regarding re-installing wood screws. Here's what I do: put the screw in the hole and press down very lightly, then rotate it counter-clockwise (backwards) until it clicks, which means the threads are lined up, then turn it clockwise to tighten. This tip will help you from stripping out the threads in your guitar.
Awesome tutorial. Eager to try putting new pickups in my guitar myself. And will likely go with Duncans since the customer support appears outstanding.
You're right. This is way easier than i thought it would be! Lol. I needed this tutorial because i am getting a Seymour Duncan custom SH5 for my strat (bridge position) and i never really done this before.
Great video! I'm pretty good with most LPs, Strats, and some mods to both. About to tackle a wiring nightmare (as I see it). Double neck guitar with coil splitting. Notice I didn't say coil taps because technically a coil tap is only used in single coil pickups. Coil splitting is for humbuckers.
Do it! Haha, changing pickups isn't hard. Just go slow, and if you get stuck, ask for help- our User Group Forum is a great resource: www.seymourduncan.com/forum
dunboozin Similar but with more output. Also given the location it will have less treble than it would in the bridge. There are lots of people who use bridge pickups in the neck.
Sounds like the guy who used to do that painting show on PBS with the big 'fro, a nice calm voice that relaxes you and makes you feel like you can do this no prob!
In total agreement with Charlie. Got a matching set of custom humbuckers coming from Seymour Duncan's shop and the last thing I wanna do botch anything on the new pickups for "Jezebel" my newly acquired Gibby SG 60's Tribute.(black semi-gloss, block inlays) The stock pickups are awesome but, Needs more Cowbell! My first new guitar. Can't wait! Cheers Eveyone!
you know how you said the spring might go flying across the room? well, that happened. fuck I mustve spent 20 solid minutes looking for that damn thing. hahahah
Your voice made this tutorial all the better.
I loved it hahah
If this guy hasn't already made a career out of narrating how-to videos, he needs to asap!! Great lesson!
Dustin Burt lol right
Clear language, clear elocution, clear audio. First-rate!
it feels like guitar asmr
You're the Bob Ross of pickup tutorials. Thanks all involved.
Kevin Osborn - fuckin' right?? 🤣
This video is almost 7 years old, but it is the best How To guitar video I've ever seen. Thanks to everyone involved.
I started playing guitar in the late 70’s & hit my stride all through the 80’s. I seam to remember the guitar community was more of a one upsmsnship & I know something that you don’t!! This is the best pickup change video ever.
So I finally Bought a JB for the bridge of my Ibanez... Came with diagram but youtube is So much easier than reading...hehe So Here I am!! Wish me luck :D
Brian Auer did you ever get it to work
The very best tutorial on the internet when it comes to changing pickups. All the rest speed through the most crucial steps. Thanks Seymour Duncan!
As someone who doesn't understand anything about electronics this is a fantastic video - definitely the clearest, best explanation I've found yet.
Greatest narrator I have ever heard, I can change my pickups with more confident.
For real. It's a great video full of great information, but dude has the most placid, calming voice ever.
Great guide! I've never changed a pickup before, the thought of doing something wrong has put me off the idea -- until finding this video.
WOW best tutorial I think Ive ever seen, from any category.. Thanks!!
GK Sage You're welcome!
Man your voice is so entertaining I love IT!!!
I can't believe how easy this is. I'm going to change mine myself for the first time and unless it somehow goes horribly wrong, I'll never pay someone else to do this again. Thanks for the clear instructions.
I nodded off half way through this, his voice is so soothing.

The wiring schematics on the SD website were really helpful too. You guys are the best.
Thanks for the great tutorial. It was nice to be able to see exactly what you were doing clearly.
Helpful tutorial, crystal clear! Installing 496R to an affordable guitar, I'll update as soon as I finish. Thanks for uploading this vid.
Best tutorial on TH-cam.
Thank you for posting this. I've never changed pickups before and after watching this I first did a guitar with just a humbucker and volume to a HSH, 1 tone, 1 volume, 5 way switch and a coil tap. Really great stuff!
ASMR going nuts, learning from a helpful tutorial; this is a damn good video!
That was ridiculously clear and to the point...Thanks!
Very clear annotated video on a process that would appear daunting!
Very detailed and to the point. With this lesson,I believe I'll have enough conference to change mine out. Thanks for a great tutorial.
I don't think there's an actual way to do a better tutorial than this lol Thank you so much
Very useful video. I've always been worried about soldering inside my guitars as I'm not experienced with that kind of thing, but this video is very helpful.
you've just given me the confidence to do it myself, thanks
By far the best tutorial around :)

Thanks Seymour Duncan! Hey Darryl, James Hopper here! This video is great eh?
This guy speaking is soothing my soul
Love how he starts off won't take much longer then changing your guitar strings than goes on showing 20 different tools you'll need just to do it haha but thanks for the help hopefully one day I could fix a whole guitar haha great video bro!!! Thanks!

I have Seymour Duncan pickups on my Strat, and they sound great!
I just put a new SD JB in my bridge on squier strat. It sounds great, thanks a lot for the tutorial.
Great tutorial! I was looking for a good tutorial because I'm thinking about purchasing a Black Winter bridge pickup.
Do it! Haha, changing pickups isn't hard. Just go slow, and if you get stuck, ask for help- our User Group Forum is a great resource: www.seymourduncan.com/forum
what would happen to the sound/dynamics if you put a lead/bridge humbucker in the neck position ??
dunboozin Similar but with more output. Also given the location it will have less treble than it would in the bridge. There are lots of people who use bridge pickups in the neck.
Thank you V. much.
I bought a set of Invaders to go into my Jackson KV3, thanks for making awesome guitar stuff and great tutorials!
We owe this all to YOU!
I installed the Invaders and holy shit, the guitar went straight to 11!!
Installed SD JB on the bridge, lots of fun! Thanks !

This was awesome, well done!
What kind of work surface can I use for soldering? I notice the work surface in this video can handle soldering wires without melting at all.
Very good video!! Thanks!!
Can't wait to change my humbucker for a Alnico II Pro Slash humbucker! *-*
Just got my Bareknuckle pickup out of the box and the green and white wires are pre soldered together, not the red and white. Any ideas?
this looks really easy thanks to you man
Excellent, informative video!
Thanks for the Support!, Excellent Tutorial!
Superb video, and so well explained.
Thanks man, this tutorial really helped!
His voice is magical
Great stuff gotta love Mr Duncan, thanks for that great job now it's my turn :)
GR8 info and kept it simple.
This was extremely helpful!
Thanks man ! . Excellent explanation. I did it. !
so i just connect the bare to the back of the volume pot along with the green like right next to each other?
My charvel desolation is different having trouble figuring it out any suggestions
So is their a video for switching pickups with coiltapping?
a simple search on google or youtube will find results...
Actually, it's called "coil-splitting." It's a common misconception amongst the guitar community with humbucker wiring.
Easier than i expected it to be. Thanks dude
why not coming up with solderless system? Like EMGs?
Do I need to de-solder the pre-existing wires, or can I leave them on and connect the new pickup wires to the existing ones?
