One may listen this extraordinary testimony reading the memories of Nathan Milstein. It comes from these years of their common youth.

It reminds me of Rachmaninoff’s wonderful recording, unsurprisingly. I think Rachmaninoff was forced to make a few cuts due to time restraints as well. Very elegant playing from Horowitz!

Indeed, Rachmaninoff's 32 Variations were more like 25!! This may be the first complete recording (am not sure and should find out)!

@ yes that would be very interesting to know! I just looked up the Rachmaninoff recording and it’s about nine years before this one.

Horowitz and milstein played wonderfully together. Horowitz played the big romantic pieces which made him a star, but I think he would have been excellent in other repertoire.

By the way, does anyone ever play the Diabelli variations which the other composers wrote for an intended set?

so is this audio file improved more than some other uploader's own?

Yes - others are uploading transfers that various companies released on LP or CD, which often use more filtering; this is a direct transfer from 78s with less sonic adjustments than on most LPs or CDs.

Before 1950 he played at a level of which I have never heard the equal. After his mental collapse, long layoff, and problems with drugs, the electroshock , he was not the same, although still outstanding.
