Installing Culverts To Fill In A Ditch

  • Installing culverts to fill in a ditch. This is where I put in the concrete culverts under the driveway, I came back to clean out and grade the ditch but around lunch it was decided to put a culvert in and just fill in the ditch. We were able to hook the 12" plastic pipe to the 12" concrete culverts no problem. We also ran the downspouts from the front of the house to the pipe in the ditch so everything can be covered up for a much cleaner look. Also had a nice visit with Carson of Thrifty Garage he just lives down the road. Thanks for watching! #EliteEarthworks #Takeuchi #InstallingCulverts

Not sure where you are located, but did you have to obtain any permits or permission from the city/county prior to doing this? I have a similar layout on my frontage, and I would like to install a culvert like you did in this video. Just afraid of opening a can of worms getting them involved if I don't need to

Great job and vid! I want to install a culvert in the ditch between my two pasture. But newbie here, question is how to choose culvert, there are steel, concret or plastic pipe in your vid, any pros cons for each type? In your vid, thr pipe didnt get burried too deep, can run truck or tractor on it? Thanks a lot!

    • @eliteearthworksllc
      @eliteearthworksllc  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you! I like the plastic the best. It’s tough and heavy duty plus they won’t rust like the steel ones. The concrete ones are good too just not as easy to work with. I usually try to get at least 12” of coverage but that doesn’t always work

They'll be really lucky if that big oak tree between the driveway and road lives. It would be awesome if it does but I'm not so sure after all the work you did around it. The smaller one probably will make it since it's so much younger and doesn't require as much area to grow roots right now. Not putting much if any fill over the roots helps too. 👍

The things ive learned about cones and traffic is, the cones are just another target for the drivers, they will hit them and keep on going. I had a lane shut down one day working in a telco manhole and a old blue haired lady took out our cones and she was dragging two of them under her car, i got on the radio to a friend about a 1/2 mile down and he managed to flag the old lady down and remove the cones from under her car.
Strobe lights only make drivers focus more on the utility vehicle they are about to hit. If you slow the flow of traffic you will get cussed out by drivers.

Grading and trains are my two most favorite things in life. That's what turned me on to subscribed to your channel because you are doing the railroad grading job. You did all that work smoothing and sloping the ditch in and the man says we'll just put pipe in it now. LOL! I know it's not a big deal to you but it would have saved a little bit of time just being able to scratch the middle of the ditch out to grade, put in the pipe, then fill over it. Never fells though for something to change and not go exactly like it was planned. The sloped ditch looked great and the end results did as well having a nice flat yard. Great video. Stay well. -Wil 👍

Looks so much better being grass covered. Easy maintenance. I love bridges, culverts & drainage pipes with proper covers. I don't like ditches for a very good reason. My daughter almost drown in a fast running irrigation ditch in front of Dad & Mom’s 40 acre farm house. Shortly after she started walking, she started running fast every where. I had asked her father to watch her, while I checked the mail. I reminded him when I looked, before jumping the ditch. She was still standing beside him, as I glanced again after jumping the ditch. As I turned to check the mail box, same spot. Of course this Mom was so glad she was paying attention this day & just how fast things can go wrong.
Looked in & grabbed the mail. I look up again, as I turned to jump back across the ditch. She was almost to the ditch in seconds. Instead of jumping across the ditch, I jumped into the ditch. Just catching her under her arms, as she went underwater. Not quick enough to prevent gravity from working & her from getting wet. She was okay, just wet & crying, not coughing. I was soaking wet & so was the mail. We would all dry out. Needless to say, I was not happy with her father. Which had seen what was happening, taking his first step 30 ft. away as his daughter stepped into the ditch.
But, day got worse, when Dad called. Same day my Dad’s dog got out of the house & run over in the road. I had to accept the blame for happening. Which, I regret happening to this day. Tad was my favorite of all of Dad’s dogs through his life. I loved the little mop of patchy colored long hair. Tad & Dad was such a joy to be around. Bless Dad’s Heart. Dad was very upset with me & I didn’t blame him. I was the one responsible to make sure Tad was in the house, before we left. I had failed him so bad. I didn’t have the heart to tell him, his granddaughter had almost drowning in the front ditch.

    Soo much better looking Brandon!!
That’s a nice option where you live as it’s very unlikely to freeze up. Could be an issue here in Canada!! Hahaha. I would definitely prefer mowing that vs a half day heeling over from one side to the other!!
I don’t have to mow on my 2 acres anymore, it’s all natural mountain/prairie grasses and granite! No more than 5” tall grass, generally, and it’s sparse. In the side yard we created for our dog we have a 40 ft x 40 ft area of artificial turf! She took a bit to adjust to it, but now she tears around an rolls on her side flat out and slides!!! They are such athletes when they want to be. 6 ft chain link fence to keep the deer out. One tried to stomp her already! Small doe. Just grabbed her front feet after she whacked me a few times (it bloody smarts getting kicked with those little feet) then dragged her to a shallow ditch and rolled her in. Off she went! Haha. There’s a hot wire on top for any bears that may feel the need to climb over. It’s a new development and we are at the end of the road. Wildlife was affected, definitely by our property, but then we are part of nature as well really.
We have pressurized irrigation pipes down far enough in some areas to keep from freezing and then homeowners can o pull household water out year round. It is treated and filtered in the home. It’s pretty clear going in the home so UV light and a sand filter is usually enough. Our place is on a water co-op! My runoff goes into a valley about 40 ft down and 4-5 miles across. No more water issues for me, ever!!
Sorry, rambling. We were definitely fortunate finding this place and when I see the water issues you have to deal with there, it reminds me of the frustrations the ranch could have as well, when we were there. We didn’t leave any projects needing to be done regarding runoff for the land we sold for the new owner. If only he knew how it went back and forth over the 55 years I lived there. Hahaha.
Fun to watch how the project could change and be accommodating for the client. You are a good operator when you are willing to allow the homeowner to change their mind and go a better route. Well done Brandon!!
See ya in the next video!!

That’s cool I would imagine those pipes have to be down deep. Wow I would say your good on runoff then 🤣 it’s neat hearing about your property and how much you had to change it sounds like a nice place. Appreciate you watching and commenting as always!
