Pretty wild that Pyroclasm wasn't mentioned at all even as an honorable mention. I'm not sure how well positioned it is in the metagame currently but it's a pretty unique effect that's a pretty big limiting factor on the types of decks that are allowed to be played in the format
I can see the black overlord being played in the beanstalk/toralian terror decks were the goal is to fill the graveyard and grab tolarian terror or eddymurk crab
Turn Inside Out is comparable to a couple of 1 mana red instants like Felonious Rage, Make Your Mark, and Otherwordly Outburst. But a manifested 2/2 that can flip instantly if it's a creature on the other side (and opponent doesn't know if it is) is miles ahead of any similar combat trick's payoffs. Drop it on your own blocker to trade, untap, attack and flip, or cast it in response to removal. Witch's Cottage something on top first. Seems like both a pumped card on value and also maybe a sick card to build around and a fun casual card. But most importantly it's also a common.
I don't know if it's too slow, but I'm interested to see how Kona could do as a sideboard option in Greasefang. It lets you pivot away from focusing on the GY and you can keep your vehicles protected in hand till they drop. I mean, it's much slower and not as explosive as Greasefang is, but could be an option to dodge all of the GY hate that'll get boarded in.
I was expecting Unstoppable Slasher to appear somewhere. Deathtouch, reduces 21 life to 0 in three hits, and you get it back a couple of turns later for free if they kill it. Seems just good in rakdos mid or some other fair Bx deck. (Though black is spoilt for pushed fair 3-drops at this point.) I'd also give Marina an honourable mention, as a card WotC was probably aiming at EDH 5c goodstuff piles but which seems like it ought to find a home as a 1-of in e-fires at the least, even if Marina-to-light doesn't take off.
Peer Past the Veil and Leyline of Resonence surely. Peer is such a good refill in the RG aggro deck and Leyline is absolutely obsurd. Honorable mention: Pyroclasm
One thing I've been cooking on with enigmatic is going sultai and doing 8 overlords (prob 3 black, 3 green, 2 blue) and using demonic counsel to find enigmatic. As far as the rest of the deck, I've got founding the third path to mill into delirium, glissa to connect and remove impending counters (which can be incarnated into from founding), and neoform to turn my 6 drops into 7s. For six drops I'm currently looking at trumpeting carnosaur, kolaghan, lumra, and/or muldrotha (to impending out of my yard). Didn't realize about beans until recently so I haven't slotted that in yet but will probably try and find space for it.
I think silent hallcreeper could find itself in maybe a UW enchantment list with like ethereal armor, all that glitters, and shardmages rescue since it’s an enchantment itself, that also pumps itself
Could you put the overlord of the haunted woods into quintarius combo you might catch it with discover 5 and that may be a problem. Let me know what you all think
deep-cavern bat might be a decent chain saw wielder? also oni-cult anvil is kind of cute with chainsaw, doing a lot of triggers, making 1/1s that come back if they die on your turn don't think that's really where the meta is going, just have a soft spot for the card
Was really surprised there was no pyroclasm in this list. Regarding Valgavoth, I am 100% certain its incorrect to play it in transmog because, among other things which Ill get to in a second, it costs you jegantha which let you cast atraxa. Jeg taps for 4 colors of atraxa, which means you only need to tap 3 lands to cast your 'brick' and leaves some of your mana open to cast cards you find off atraxa. Its legendary so its a downside for creativity decks (unless you want to play a split of targets, which has its own problems of not being sure what you will find once you resolve creativity) Its considerably more expensive than either atraxa or tyrant, and it is more demanding in terms of pips of colors. I can also imagine it being awkward vs wide boards, since it doesnt have vigilance, attacking for 9 (and gaining 9 life) might be bad vs boards convoke/angels/monoG can create, which means you have to hold it back and watch your opponent build the board even further until they kill you. Most importantly, I think its unacceptable to play a creativity target this bad against sweepers, and to lesser extent edicts (these dont see much play atm but would return if valgavoth decks were any good). Hype around a new 9 drop is understandable, but this card is extremely unlikely to be better than atraxa in transmog or vaultborn tyrant in creativity. The only thing this has going for it is that its a strong hatebear for phoenix/sacrifice/greasefang, but then it does (almost) nothing vs lotus field. I also suspect sacrifice can make enough nonland permanents to cast bitter triumph and kill valgavoth without hurting itself too much, so even that is a moot point. We might be down to 'Valgavoth is only better vs phoenix than alternatives, and worse vs everything else" which is not a good place to be.
Wow... I didn't expect Fear of Missing Out to be your first pick... I really don't think its gonna impact Pioneer that much... But I'm probably Crazy rs
Aside from domain (where it's marginal benefit over the existing land base), I think people are seriously overestimating the green overlord. If you're in a place where you have the 1GG to impend it, either the lands got shifted to have a very greedy amount of green producing lands, it's t4 or later, or you probably already have 3+ types anyway.
Valgavoth comes into play, does nothing, dies to an edict, gg go next. In certain matchups it's really good but I think it's more of a sideboard swap in against like phoenix and your main transmog/creativity/reanimate target is still gonna be Atraxa or vaultborn. Against any deck with black though it seems really sketchy imo
@@DoctorJango Exactly, which is why I think it's more of a sideboard threat, in your mainboard you want something that's always going to be good, if you happen to play against a black deck game one you may just lose because they had an edict. It's also bad into UW control since if you do manage to resolve your transmog or creativity or w/e they're just gonna have a supreme verdict that they haven't had to use on anything else yet and again valgavoth will do nothing. It's worth playing just not as your primary threat I don't think
@@TheZeratulsan Yeah but people had blot out in sideboard for veinripper and can easily put that back in, creativity and transmog don't have many/any nontoken creatures so sheoldred's edict can't really be played around either. Maybe I'm overestimating people's removal but I think having some value off an etb like atraxa or vaultborn is a big deal as well
I've done a crazy amount of testing, valgavoth makes grixis or rakdos creativity so absurd. It just wins the game on the spot into things like phoenix, and you can board things like sire of insanity for control or bring to light.
Hedge shredder is better in MonoG. All lands milled with cavalier of thorns come into play. 2 devotion, elves can pilot, and it's a 5/5 good against mass removal.
If Silent Hallcreeper copies a Mockingbird that’s a copy of Silent Hallcreper, does that mean it becomes a Silent Hallcreeper with its counters still on it and its three choices reset?
As a boggles player, I do think Sheltered by Ghost and Shardmage's Rescue are going to be amazing for boggles. I think it is funny we are getting an Ethereal Armor reprint in the set, the set itself is telling you to play boggles / enchantress.
@@turbo_vieja yes, but a 2/2 is still very relevant. For control the 2/2 just kills you eventually, for midrange it might still trade with a creature, or flip into something relevant, and for aggro it gives your opponent a blocker for your small dorky creatures. If it is good than for combo to disrupt hate pieces because you usually do that the turn or a turn before you win
@@Souperbs there are plenty combos with Marvin, rakdos tree is one of the best. As for leyline, you thinking it’s inconsistent is just nonsense, even in standard they are putting up results. Red leyline putting in turn 2 to 3 consistent kills. Green leyline is either free or easily cast turn 3 or 4 into turn 4 or 5 win.
@@KMProtectionServices Rakdos Tree is probably my most played pioneer deck and I definitely wouldn't want to put it in there. You almost never want to actually play the tree, and that line also requires you playing a 2/2 that can't do anything on it's own first and having it live. Marvin copying bloodtithe is okay at best, just a slow removal spell. To play him you'd be cutting Inti's or one of your other looting effects, and that would just make the deck more inconsistent imo.
@@Souperbs Marvin can copy the sac vampire too. Being able to win through combo on board or graveyard makes it much harder to deal with. I have tested it and it is better, however with the new set and current meta this deck isn't that good anymore.
