I have traced my lineage back to the O'Neill's and in my branch of the family, our last name changed from the original spelling in the 1790's here in southwest PA to O'Neel then to O'Neal and some dropping the "O" altogether to just Neal in the mid 1800's and then to its current spelling of Neel in the 1890's

Even the surname Johnson which seems English was actually MacShane in Irish, again changed to appear more English and keep land. The Chichesters who are particularly horrible to the Irish actually changed their names to O Neil to inherit Irish land, Terence O Neil a former Northern Ireland First minister was from this fabricated line of O Neils.

That is what we were told… My mother knew everything about our family history. Our family name is currently Neal and never went to Neel though.
