The map of Ireland on his face. THE Fitzgerald and O'Neill mentioned in the first minute? What a coincidence!

I have traced my lineage back to the O'Neill's and in my branch of the family, our last name changed from the original spelling in the 1790's here in southwest PA to O'Neel then to O'Neal and some dropping the "O" altogether to just Neal in the mid 1800's and then to its current spelling of Neel in the 1890's

That is what we were told… My mother knew everything about our family history. Our family name is currently Neal and never went to Neel though.

Funny the divine right of kings is mentioned - of course, with time, that was incorporated into O'Neill history too, and are thus said to have descended from Jeremiah.

I am a descendant of the protestant O'Neal clan. The Red Hand of Ulster is our motto/signet. The Tyrone area of the O'Neal clan. I wanna come home to Ireland. Never been there.

@@benscally1143 Yes it a strange one, I'd like to know more. Some changed religion to keep their land.
Even the surname Johnson which seems English was actually MacShane in Irish, again changed to appear more English and keep land.
The Chichesters who are particularly horrible to the Irish actually changed their names to O Neil to inherit Irish land, Terence O Neil a former Northern Ireland First minister was from this fabricated line of O Neils.

Hugh O'Neill was to all intents and purposes an Englishman. He had been taken care of and educated in England, had been taken to the Court by Sidney, and also had been given a troop of horse in the Queen's service. He served in the English army in the Irish wars, cooperated with Essex in the settlement of Antrim and the Ulster war, and was constantly commended for his zeal and loyalty in the Queen's service. He remained English in sentiment for a long period, and it is interesting to see this descendant of the old fire-eater Con, the first Earl, lamenting in his correspondence with Elizabeth the disinclination of his countrymen to order and civility, and deploring their barbarous preference for Celtic manners. He pleaded the necessity of attaching the natives to the English Government, and requested that, with reference to his own district, effectual steps should be taken to suppress the name of The O'Neill, as the first step towards the introduction of English laws and manners into the northern province.

O Neill was trying to gain support from the crown to supress Turlough linneach O Neill, he wasn't the first Chief to enlist crown support against a rival. He also always wanted the title of The O Neill Mor for himself.
On his letters to the queen, what do you think he was going to write ? That's what they wanted to hear, so that's what he told them, while gathering his strength. He also wrote the queen in the interests of Fiach Mac Aodh O Broinn the Wicklow firebrand.
You say he was English , but to the English he was always Irish, indeed that's why he went into rebellion, English mistreatment of his interests in Uladh.

Saying they were looked down on due to being seen as Pagans is silly at best. They were seen as unnacceptable due to being seen as barbarians due to them not having big towns or cities. And the Pope giving the English Ireland is just a story. Simple.
