Good find. These days whenever I see "CHEAP FOLLOW FOCUS!" in a title I expect some derpy rubber band trick or something. This was refreshing.

Thanks for this Caleb. Ordered one from Amazon and was very pleasantly surprised. Nice smooth dampening to the movement, light weight and small. Since I would never use the white marking disk and little blue indicators I removed those for an even more compact unit. I use this little follow focus with various camera rigs. I appreciate how well photographed your videos are. Keep up the great work.

Always great videos Caleb. I mostly only use a follow focus with my shoulder rig. If I have to use it with a focus by wire lens, I use one of those rubber band bracelets instead of a gear. Since the focus points are not always in the same place on a lens like that, the attachment point will interfere. The gear on the follow focus drives the focus ring pretty well with just friction. Thanks for all the great content!

Well informed review, true to form. I find follow focuses (focusi?) ensure that you never accidentally a finger in the shot when focusing. Also for interview set ups it's so much handier focusing your talent if they lean forward with the follow focus from side of camera, if acting as interviewer and cameraperson as I do (with monitor facing towards me naturally). 33 bucks is a steal!

Nice video as always Caleb. I only wish you'd covered whether the unit had any slop/play in the gearing, and how useful a FF can be for doing repeated focus pulls to specific marks (distances). I thought you'd be especially interested in that aspect, as you often do tutorials on product videos.

great video! great find! having played with it first hand, do you think this would work on the zoom ring instead of just the focus ring? I'm my mind i see it being helpful with a slow zoom in or out and keeping it smooth.
Love it! As you say. A lot of fun and a cheap way to getting practice at follow focus.
BTW, any specific cages you would recommend for a GH4? To hand hold with a mic and light (and perhaps the above!)?

Recently, I upgraded from a6300 to a Fujifilm X-H1. I'm thinking of buying the smallrig cage for X-H1 with vertical grip. Do you think the previous setup from this video(with single rod clamp & follow focus) will fit into the smallrig cage for X-H1?

dope review - wanted to see demo footage compared to your normal focusing techniques as well.
Does the hand wheel have any play when pressing around it. I just bought one and it's got a slight play in it like the hand wheel isn't push in all the way on the stem. Hope that makes since.

Great vid! Caleb, just wondering... how come you angle the follow focus instead of using it at a 90-degree angle to your lens? Does it only work at that angle, when mounted? Wondering if there was an advantage/disadvantage, either way... thanks man!
Awesome find, now I need to get some manual lenses for my two a6500's :)
I use my follow focus to mark focus points and hit them spot on. My FF has a marker that can spin toward the back so I can see it from behind and not have to try and check markings on the side of my lens which isn't facing me at all. I'm sure the original intent was for focus pullers but I think it's far easier to use a focus system if your camera is mounted to something.

Thanks for this tip! Do you know what dimentions the gears are? Been looking around for rubber gear rings, and the cheepest are 0.8 (teeth size). Do not know if the dimentions are in mm or imperial.
Looks pretty cool but is there something with a servo and the focusing dial detached from the unit with the servo? It doesn't need to be wireless but I would like to use a contraption like this to help me focus manually with 600mm focal length where with a 10x magnification in live view, the entire image jumps around like crazy at even the slightest touch of the focus ring with my hand. I'd like to be able to focus without touching the camera on the tripod.
I've been looking for something else to use for my follow focus. The one I have does not work with my Helios 42-2 that I recently purchased already modified with gear rings for focus and aperture. The one I have now will only work with the aperture ring because the focus rigs is much closer to the camera.

Late comment, But would this follow focus work with canon eos M (1st gen) cine build you made in another video ? I know you mentioned it would work with any cage I am specifically curious about the form factor of those c mount lenses

I find that if your cage allowed for the follow focus to be mounted on top of the cage (by opposition to the base of the cage), the follow focus being then inverted, by that I mean pointing downward instead of upward, I have more stability.
I purchased the coocher camera cage that you featured last in your camera cages under $100. It comes with the 15mm rods. Can I attach the follow focus directly to this?
Bought this in April but hadn’t found a use for it (since Z lenses have the focus ring to near to the base to use for my Z6 mounted in a cage... but I just bought a legacy 60mm 2.8D for macro shots and it all fits! Now to try to use it in tandem with my Rhino Slider... 🧐

I've been considering a follow focus and for this price I guess I can't go wrong. I want to try one to see if it would be a benefit for the shooting I do. "Hyper-budget"......I am going to steal that term. Sounds better than "Zero-budget."

This could be exactly what I'm looking for. When filming presenters at conferences and they're walking around the stage with a shallow depth of field, it's fiddly re-focussing. So, having a follow-focus wheel I can mark up with focus points (back of stage, lectern, front of stage etc) is something I've been looking for. What's the gearing like - i.e. what is often a tiny turn of the lens I'd prefer a bigger turn of a follow-focus wheel. NB Love your videos, I've learned so much and often buy kit you recommend, but being in the UK I can't use your affiliate links, which I feel bad about! How about some international affiliate links?

Right now I think that a used DJI Focus is probably the best deal you're going to get. However, if you're aiming even cheaper, the Came-TV wireless is actually pretty usable, you just can't rely on auto-calibration and the motor tends to 'jump'.
Used both with the Alexa Mini on several different shoots.
