How to light an MSR whisperlite stove

  • The MSR whisperlite stove is an ingenious invention, turning a liquid fuel source into a gas and then burning like a gas stove.
    This is the MSR whisperlite international, and burns a variety of fuels including shellite (white gas), kerosene and propane gas.
    You need different jets for the different fuels though. It com,es standard with the shellite jet.
    Here is a link to where you can but this stove online. It is not cheap, but it a very good quality reliable stove that will last you a very long time.

      Thanks heaps mate. I use to have one but it was different. I only bought this one recently and had trouble with that locking hinge which is why I put a lot of emphasis on it. Nobody else seemed to say much about it.

    Nice demonstration. I have an early 90's vintage MSR International (from before the shaker jet was introduced). This was a time when you had to learn by doing - there were no instructional videos like there are now.
    In almost every video I've watched on YT, people are in too much of a hurry to start the fuel flow before the stove is properly primed (with the expected flare-up). If you're doing it right, the stove will tell you when it's time to open the valve - you just have to learn to recognise it. Here, you've used just the right amount of fuel to prime it and waited the right length of time before opening the fuel valve.

    i've had my (white gas) model for 40 years...very reliable and rugged...i carry a 1 liter bottle for 3-4 day backpacking trips, but could easily switch to a half-liter (i probably won't because it's the original bottle, and has held up as well as the stove)...

    Hi Robbie, that's the same principle as the old kero primus stoves and blowlamps. We used to light them with metho to heat them up. I still have a couple in my shed, along with a blow lamp.

      @@robbiefishing NOT like kero. It's highly refined petrol! REMEMBER my burnt hand vid from a few years back? THAT was the result of a FLASH burn from shellite fumes combusting! Kerosene is more like diesel, oily and usually does NOT burn on its own without wicking!

    I am a bit suspicious of those sorts of things Robbie, after the uncle I used to go fishing with blew something like that up when we were camping on the Edwards one year. Who owns the pony's that sneeked up to the fence and had a squiz a few minutes in?

    • @robbiefishing

    Bloody ripper stove Robbie! What do they go for?

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks UF, theyre quite expensive. I think it was around $220. I cant remember exactly because I bought a few other odds and ends.
      The propane/butane gas stoves are much cheaper, but buying gas cannisters all the time is much more expensive.
      If you use them all the time, these work out cheaper in the long run.

    • @Urbanfisho
      @Urbanfisho 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robbiefishing Ok, Those can stoves ARE good, I have several, and the gas DOES last a while! I can get a 4 pack for $3-5. Last me a few trips!
      Seems they got the SAME idea/principle from/of the EVAPOURATIVE fuel injection system!
      Remember that? A mob in Melb came up with it & got an old 202 VK to do 60mpg!
      THAT disappeared quickly didn't it? NEVER heard about it AGAIN!

    • @robbiefishing
      @robbiefishing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Jinda,
      I put around 20 or so initial pumps to light it as in this video. Usually that will keep it going while I boil water. If I'm frying, every once in a while the flame will start to weaken a bit so I will give it another pump, but its not often. Its not like it's every minute or so. LOL
