Dee Gunter has been breeding and loving the Bluetick Coonhound for nearly fifty years. Dee was a key advocate and the breed being recognized by the AKC. In this video Dee shares her love and wisdom of the breed.
The Bluetick Coonhound is a hunting dog, that tracks vermin and keeps it at bay until a hunter can dispatch of the the animal.
Blueticks are not just for hunting they make amazing family dogs, great for the active family or individual.
The overall build of the Bluetick Coonhound is muscular and speedy. The head is carried up and the tail carried over the back, without signs of fear or nervousness. The Bluetick coat should be moderately coarse and glossy. The Bluetick Coonhound gets its "blue" coloring from black ticking on a white background, which gives the impression of a navy blue color. This ticking covers the body and can be interspersed with variously-shaped black spots on the back, ears and sides. Preference runs to more blue than black on the body. Black should predominate on the head and ears. Bluetick Coonhounds should have tan dots over the eyes and the sides of the muzzle will be tan. There is generally a ticked blaze running up the face. Bluetick Coonhounds should be 21 inches to 27 inches tall at the shoulder and males weigh approximately 55 to 80 pounds (25 to 36 kg). Females are considerably smaller at an average weight of 45 to 65 pounds.[1] Feet should be cat-like, rounded with well-arched toes. Their paws are larger than those of nearly all other breeds of dogs. Rear legs should have a moderate bend at the hocks. All legs should be straight from the dog's body to the ground when viewed from the front or rear.
Gascon blues are larger than standard Blueticks, with males a minimum of 27 inches and a maximum of 30 inches, per the American Blue Gascon Hound Association's breed standard

If you have not had heard a pack of hounds in the middle of the night sounding off and baying up.
You have missed alot. It's fantastic.
These dogs when ready to go to work will be vibrating like a sewing machine.
I've seen them on a hunt with cut feet, bloody muzzle and ears torn running through everything in their path and happy as hell when you get to them.
I'm older now and cannot beat the brush as I did when I was young.
Glad I got to experience hunting with these dogs.

Haha, fun story. About four days ago my friends found a starving and sickly young dog that just kind of moseyed on up to them (They live in real rural farmlands). The dog, despite being sick and probably neglected, was as sweet as could be to the family's four girls, one of them being just over a year old. However, the mother of the girls was allergic to dogs, so the dog needed a new home asap. After three days my grandmother decided to take him, and the dog was taken to the vet this morning. The dang thing turned out to be a pure bred Bluetick Coonhound of all things, and is currently on medication for hookworms and anemia. Prayers for this poor dog. His name is Israel, or Izzy for short.
Great video by the way, so glad to have a great source of information on TH-cam!

Our purebred bluetick, Bessie, is now almost 9. She is hands down the best dog I've ever had and I would never have a dog of another breed. But I will say a few cautionary words to people thinking of getting one. Firstly, and this didn't come up in the video, this is a "LOUD" dog. We live in a house in town. I've trained her to keep a lid on it, but she was very loud when we first got her, and even now she still starts bawling her head of at super high decibels when she gets excited out in the yard (for instance if a squirrel attempts to enter the yard) Fortunately the neighbors love her. But you can probably hear her 5 blocks away (seriously - at least 5), so I'm not sure about other people. She is an extremely affectionate dog. She is constantly snuggling up and trying to get pets. You have to pet her about 8 times a day. She prefers to be with me and/or my wife all of the time. She doesn't like to do things alone. She doesn't like to be alone, but she puts up with it, to a point. OK, here's the big one: You have to walk her all the time and I don't mean little walks around the neighborhood either. We're currently doing 3 brisk miles every single morning. If you don't do this, she'll get kinda crazy and might start chewing up the furniture, spreading trash around the house, and things like that. So, she keeps us in shape. So to finish this, in my experience, these are the best dogs ever - the sweetest, most loving dog you could ever imagine. But you have to be ready for all of it. They're not for everyone. This is not a golden retriever. This is a high maintenance dog.

My father had a bluetick when I was a baby, and young kid. He was everything this woman said; especially the super protective part, but also the incredibly family friendly part, and amazing hunter. I remember laying on the floor in the living room watching tv with my head on his tummy, and he would just lay there as long as I would. When I would get up to go somewhere (ie: the bathroom or kitchen); he was right there by my side. I miss him sssooo much. 😢

    • @alexmckee4683
      @alexmckee4683 ปีที่แล้ว

English Coonhound is the redticked hound, very similar to these blueticked hounds. The English Coonhound is so called because it was developed from English Foxhounds, with other dogs mixed in to improve the treeing ability. These coonhounds are all "landraces", working dog breeds that have very complex ancestry. Dogs of various breeds were mixed to try to get the best mix of traits for the needs of farmers in the American south. So these coonhounds have beagles and their antecedents like the Talbot Hound in their ancestry, English Foxhounds, the French Gascon hounds, as well as other utility breeds and mongrels. They stabilised into six distinct breeds, this video showing the Bluetick Coonhound and the reference to the English Coonhound is to what is also known as the Redtick Coonhound. All great dogs.

    Love this video..
I've had many dogs breeds in my life; muts (lab/pit mix), Collies, Great Danes, and a few smaller breeds. although 13 years ago i was given a Bluetick puppy as a valentines day present and she was the best dog i every had in my life. She was the most caring and lovable dog i ever owned and is the reason why i will never want any other breed again (well except for maybe Great Dane). But be warned. Blueticks are very smart dogs. She could tell what you where making for dinner before you even have it done, and already plan out how she could steal some off your plate. :) But she was a dog that wanted nothing more from you than love and attention. From the time i got home till i had to leave for work she was by my side. So if you don't want a dog that is with you all the time stay way.. Also on training get a electronic training collar. Once a hound finds a scent they are fixated. There was more than one time i could only get her attention outside by making her collar vibrate because she was so fixated on the cool new sent she just picked up.

I have had two lines of these majestic dogs as well as the le petite bleu de gascon. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM!!! I live in Nova Scotia Canada where raccoons are so plentiful they are a dominant pest, however I purchased my first line from the famous David Dean. It was off hammer xv111. His name was Gator. I trained and used him for snow shoe hare. This beauty was incredible. He would leave the beagles in the dust. What ever took the 15" top notch beagle say 20 min to round up the first rabbit these beasts would do it in 3-5 min. Beagles are no match!! The blues have an incredible nose and can handle the deeper snows. I would run them 5-7 hours a day on a hunt and they were ready to go the next days to follow. I have also had the Cameron line. The same thing outstanding in the deep black thick spruce with many bogs lakes and rough terrain ie cape Bretton highlands of NS. I have today my old gal Ruby who is 10. She is now just my jogging companion. I have also had the Bainbridge line out of Ontario Canada. Her name was Dixie. She was by far the most BEAUTIFUL OF THE BLUETICK. A show dog. Once again incredible hunter and exceptional house dog. Extremely lovable and compassionate hunter. 7 years ago I purchased their European cousin the petite bleu de gascogne. Not the short legged basset type rather smaller to the grand bleu. You can definitely see where the breed originated to make its American cousin. Now Otis was the grittiest of all and he was very sleek GORGEOUS. there were only 4 in Canada from le bleu cardinals from Europe here. Unfortunately he passed this winter. I loved him dearly. I would have to say the larger hounds were much more enjoyable than the beagles for rabbit hunting. Smart and quick. My female would even retrieve the rabbit after the shot was confirmed. I would own many more if I were a younger man starting off again. My next hound after Ruby will be an American black and tan. I just love the coonhound breed. They will hunt what ever you train them on. After 40 years of this hare hunting I would say all around hands down they are the most lovable best hunters of large and small game.

She passed 1 year ago and my cat passed 6 months ago both from cancer RIP Bella and Amber

Love those huntin' hounds. Didn't know they were also good protection dogs. I've always had ridgebacks, for that purpose. I'm crazy about Blue Ticks and Black & Tans, and always check them out at the Westminster.

Had to help get over the fear of noises helped some she was the best dog I ever had she passed at 13 about 7years ago her picture and ashes are by my bed think of her everyday. She was sent to me for a reason and had the best life I could give her. Her name was Shilo

Enjoyed the video, just wish you had interviewed someone in the south who has raised hunting bloodlines for years. Uchtman, Jet, Smokey River Jeans Blue Tramp... etc. She touched on the high points but never explained them to to some of the older bluetickers in Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Arkansas, Mississippi... 10/10 though still. Thanks again for another great one.

I knew a bear hunter that had a kennel full of blueticks. One of them looked identical to the dog in the beginning. His name was EASY. And he was the COOLEST dog!! There was 7-8 of them and Easy was the diplomat of the pack.
I might like one of these. Fearless and jovial is a great combination. Lol

Blueticks are amazing dogs. My great uncle had one. I only coexisted with Maggie may a short time but she was so patient with me as a Toddler. I would claim on her and pull her ears and she'd just lay there and take it. She been gone a long time. I think I was four or five when she died and I'm nearly 20 now but I hope to get on in the future.

I think my dog is a Coonhound mixed breed. She's the cutest dog ever in my opinion. I'm not sure what breeds, but she weighs about 65 lb (full grown) and she has double dewclaws on both of her back legs.

I have a ukc registered redbone hound and he is amazing. She is right about them not liking things in their yard and will chase them 😂 and he will not let people come near him or me if he feels uneasy. But he is very sweet! He lets people touch him. The only people he don’t like is my neighbors and that’s bc they was mean to him. But I had my words with them 😊 he is huge btw! I only feed him a protein grain free diet and he is all muscle and he weights right at 100 pounds

If Dee was a key advocate for AKC recognition, she did not "love" the breed. The AKC has done nothing good for so called breed "improvement."
I read their board minutes from years ago, when they backed a split among lines of Black and Tan Coonhounds, all based on ear length. People who were actually WORKING their black and tans bred dogs for smaller ears than the show folks liked, because contrary to some people's belief, those giant ears don't do much to pick up scent or help dogs on the hunt. Too big and they are a liability, prone to injury.
But the show folks said they liked the giant ears because they looked "Houndy" and "Typey" and "Traditional". So they actually closed the studbooks. Thus limiting the gene pool.
Now does that sound like they care about dogs? Not really. It's a beauty pageant and a farce.
