Amazing songs all around, with real life examples, stories which we all have seen or lived through. They certainly don't make them like these anymore. Always brings a few tears and smiles
I was 12 when Carry on up the charts was no 1, begged my parents/santa for it for Christmas, I got the CD and its still my favourite album 20+ years later. fab album fab band :-)
Did you play it over Christmas Dinner and the explicit version of Don't Marry Her come on? I know a few people who were cringing when grandparents nearly choked on a Brussels sprout! I think Paul Heaton talked about it in an interview.
@@michelle88960, Don’t Marry Her is on the album Blue Is The Colour not Carry On Up The Charts. I only know this because I had Blue Is The Colour CD and was quite surprised at the change in the lyrics of the album version compared to the single release, especially as there wasn’t any “parental warning” label on it like you would have now.
This is ss Saturday morning/afternoon for me as a child, out for weekly shopping, against my will of course, with mum, dad and 2 sisters carry on up the charts playing while waiting for footbal to come on the radio, then mcdonalds and 90s tv (gladiators, family fortunes etc...) every damn weekend and it was... great!
Paul Heaton is a master of happy sounding songs that have dark or cynical lyrics. Everybody thinks “Don’t Marry Her” is a romantic song and it’s about a bloke having an affair! 😂 Same with “Song for Whoever” another romance that’s actually about the bloke only dating these girls so that he has material for the songs he writes, and how he thinks of them in a generic way.
I was in Ireland in the early 90's that introduced me to this group. Spent years trying to figure out who sung that "a Little Time" Song. It had haunted me of 10 years... Has been a prize CD in my collection for another 10 years now.
man!! i grew up this song in the background of my life ive heard 20 or sometimes??? which makes it so greta..i heard on 80s hour on Absolute Radio great, unassuming singer
That line "Midnight, a husband getting ready to fight, the daughter sleeps alone with the light turned on, she hears." Gets me everytime. I was that kid. My mam and dad coming home arguing and fighting, I sneaked downstairs once and saw my mam with a knife. I'm 50 now and I still think about it. Don't think kids don't hear your arguments.
not bad considering his music teacher at school told him he will never get anywhere in music. they say 1 in 3 households in the uk has the beautiful south album...
fu**ing good times in my life. Man we were mad, Me shirl, oggy Ricky Nickie and Gary BTS coming thru!!!!!!!!!!!!! you know what I am talking about in the 90s
the housemartins or beautiful south, which ever, there timeless now, there music is one of a kind, and TH-cam has made them timeless, live on, and have a good day. be happy with what you know, and respect the people you've know, have met, and will meet... you only have one life...
paul heaton genius love what he does ........pity he wont play these songs or housemartins songs again...but respect your decision ....life changin song still left in ye brother
Before I knew about the first 3 Beautiful South albums I didn't know Jackie Abbott wasn't the original female vocalist. Another thing I noticed about Briana Corrigan was that she never got asked to do solo vocals which was one of the reasons she left The Beautiful South but it was the song 36D that made her finally decide to leave the band and persue as a solo artist. Then after that Paul Heaton agreed to allow Jacqui Abbott and Alison Wheeler to do some songs as a solo.
30 years later and I still every so often come back to the beautiful south (early stuff only thanks) for a binge... did a music video for paul Heaton years ago.. he was grumpy but nice.
I found their greatest hits cassette when I was little. I loved it, I used to listen to it all the time - never understood the lyrics! - The songs aren't quite the happy chirpy songs I remember as a child. :') haha
back in the 80s here in South America we made our "own hits cassettes" recording live from radio and mixing manually (with a bic pen as an "editor") in the boombox; the lucky friends that happend to own a double deck were the replicators for the rest of the gang
The Beautiful South were the first band I ever saw live back in 1989, Victoria hall, Hanley. Unfortunately Brianna Corrigan wasn't there due to illness. Top band
It is the same woman on vocals. Her name is Brianna Corrigan. The rest of the band at this point is Paul Heaton (the male vocalist in this one). Dave Hemmingway (the male vocalist in A Little Time), and Sean Welch, David Rotheray, and David Stead. (source: Wikipedia/Album Liner notes)
@@Oh_You_seen_my_Womble She left because she didn't agree with some of the songs Paul wrote about women. 36D as an example. She also wanted to try going solo. She was the best female lead in the band. A lovely person also.
I’m a big fan of the beautiful south and of the Housemartins, I have all their albums. I think Briana was he best female singer they had. I love her (singing , looks, everything about her )
Songwriting as clever and smart and melodic and pleasing as this...well, not much out there as good as this. I am working on an opera based on songs of the Beautiful South. So much rich material.
Anyone stil listening in 2024❤

There's never been anything like this band since. Strange, warm and other worldly about them.. I've never put my finger on !!

Lol, you had a good upbringing then....
Loved this band for years. Great songs.
Why has it just occurred to me this track is genius. Frothy sound with sinister lyrics, this is my sound. I love it.

Seriously? The Bedouin got into The Beautiful South? No reason why not, of course. Music is the universal language after all!
Beautiful South videos always make me so happy :)
