Great video... Would be nice if you do a video kind of a tour of your smart car all the little things you added and modified.. BTW I have a smart car too 450 mk7 2006 cdi
Oh man, no human life should be allowed to - 40 lol, yes restricting the thermostat and make it actually shut when its supposed to is gonna be a total gamechanger, I changed mine with the one of a petrol Smart that has a restrictor plate built in, but one of the end of the new thermostat is bigger than the diesel one so you need also another rubber tube, you could also just place a restrictor Plug in the tube keeping the old thermostat, in both cases you need to drop the engine, not great fun but the result especially in such cold days is gonna be so worth it, you are gonna have totally different car, cheers!
Yes, I agree too cold. When I was a younger man I said I dont want to go through another winter. After fixing old trucks in the cold back when cold used to be colder & longer durations. Weather seems tamer these days except for the one or 2 week inevitable cold stretch each year. Anyway I packed up my truck & trailer with all my possesions & headed down to the US boarder. Being in my 20s & nieve to how the world works. I dod not apply for a visa & showed up at the boarder & said I want to go to california & find work & become a US citizen. They brought me inside & did a big write up & said cannot just come down here & work. I spent the night at a small town near the boarder. Got up & said to mtself I came all this way. I might as well just go for a vacation then. So I went back to the same boarder crossing with my truck & trailer full of all my possesions & said " I just want to come down for a vacation now !". & It was the exact same boarder gaurd as the day before haha. Well then they finger printed me & banned me from driving down, said if want to travel to the US. I would have to fly down & provide where I was staying & how long & proof of employement 6 months back to show I was not coming down to find work. So I flew down a week later & spent 2 months roughly in las vegas & found out that I was 1 guy in a sea of many, most illegal imigrants with fake id's trying to find a company just like I was. In construction. I even called the army recruiter to see if I could join the army & get citizenship or residency that way but they said no. Eventually I ran out of money & had to come back to cold Canada to go back to work. These days I think of finding a piece of land where is warm down south & go there for the winter months. Very difficult to go live in other country without the corporate connections or schooling. But the winters are milder these days & I like chop wood in the cold. If have a warm Jacket & boots - 40 °c is not so bad. No moisture in air to transfer the cold. If windy then sucks or if have to work outside on metal machines then sucks, but always ways to stay warm & have to plan for or will freeze literally. Now I enjoy the cold & not mind so much. But retirement in a hot sunny place for sure :)
@@manbuilds1587 shame on the US, their loss! Nice story thank you for sharing, yes you can adapt but so much better to be in a milder climate, keep your behind warm my friend :D
Thanks for the video, I live on Vancouver island, I have a 2006 smart, I had to up my antifreeze with the cold snap we had, I pulled the lower rad hose to drain out some and now I can't put back the same amount, maybe a liter and a half short, have you done a video n burping the coolant?
It should burp itself eventually. The resivour in the front of the car is the highest point in the system. But there is a long way for all that coolant to travel from the front to the back. Could try filling it while running or top it up after it cools down from a good drive. Might have to check the level a couple times untill it stabalizes.
@@manbuilds1587 the early one as the same engine with the egr only and 45bhp the later deisel as the 54 bhp with egr and dpf on it so ime guessing mines got the 450 engine . Great little engine . Probs is stuck open ordered a new one anyway will fit it and see thanks
I think it got five gears looks like a manual with a clutch actuator on it not a real auto you got the deisel model before uk ive never seen a 450 cdi over here until early 2009
@@phiiipbrickles8657 Yah. I forgot, I remember now. Thank you :). 451 has actuator also with the manual. Is upgraded still with different actuator that keeps the water out of the bell housing. & a much nicer interior. 451 probable best of both. Diesel & more comfortable drive & more air bags. 450 air bags just block glass from windshield cpming into car. Had a 100km accident & found this out hard way. Probable why memory slipping on 451's :). Think the Smart 453 is the one with the convensional automatic transmission & poor fuel economy. In canada we got the diesel smart 450's for 2 years 2004-2006. Then importing tjem was stopped. Not sure why. After that only the gasoline models were imported.
New emission standard after 2006. CDI would need a DPF, too expensive to Canada. For 2004-2006, Mercedes doesn't want to redesign the gasoline EVAP for CAN and US, so they sell the diesel (don't require evap ) in CAN. US has higher emission standard for diesel( EPA has the same standards for gas and diesel, most countries relax on diesel cars), cdi is not offered in US. There's a sticker on the CAN cdi cars saying NOT FOR SALE IN USA. But One 450 went to an US Museum. The later gas 451 has a lower CAN MSRP than 450 cdi and offered in US. 451 is safer with two more air bags, 450 just has two pieces of foam by your head (it's high quality foam, like in a helmet; why the car doesn't come with helmets?), very creative by Mercedes.. clutch actuator in the 451 is better. Gear box in 451 is a regular 5 speed, 450 is a 3 speed with hi/ lo drive(like a semi truck), so it's a 6 speed in total. No space for a regular 6 speed. Mercedes doesn't intend to sell cdi in Canada at all, but the bean counters have no choice. The base gas model already costs more than Honda fit, Toyota Yaris and these have 4 doors; cdi costs even more. I think we are lucky to have the cdi in Canada. Financially, gas smart doesn't make sense, cdi is worse, Mercedes didn't make any money from the entire business, 450 cdi is pretty special(the good and bad) @@manbuilds1587

I was thinking my thermostat was stuck open in my early 451 at -8 because it was only blowing cold air maybe its just the way they are in the cold
I thought the 451's had upgraded everything & a traditional automatic transmission. Maybe coolant is low or really is stuck open.
