Watched this video on the 31. I'm a total rookie in commercial and never even worked on am exhaust fan. A customer called my residential appliance co. and for help as he couldn't get anyone else out new year day. My lucky day this is the same system he has. I knew exactly where to look and what to look for. Even though it was a simple repair sure made a good impression. I love how detail oriented you are and that you take your time to do it right.
I work part time in a restaurant and I noticed the fans doing that exact same thing today. Good thing I’m working tomorrow so that I can check that. I’m a regular employee there and because they know that I also do HVACR work they ask me before calling the other guys out. Thank you for this video Chris.
Well Chris, I didn’t realize until I got here this morning is that the hood system here is the exact same system, CaptiveAire. But luckily it isn’t on autopilot. So I’m good with messing with that system. Thanks again for the video.

I know its several months old. But I haven't seen anyone mention this. When you were checking fault codes, you hit enter and got into the codes menu. You saw the PCU error, but when you went to scroll through the list, instead of hitting up or down, you hit menu, which should act like a back button. So you likely backed out of the faults menu back to the previous screen instead of scrolling. I can see how it would be easy to do, your finger is nearly big enough to hit two buttons at once. And the silk screen print telling you which was which is tiny.
The big picture and the narrowing down of the slightest possibility. Reasonable judgment plays a significant role in formulating your next step, yet the path stays consistent until it no longer provides a logical conclusion. That's what I walked away understanding, and I appreciate that. Great job and thanks.
Excellent work!! That video demonstrates not only your tech skills but your interpersonal/communication skills as well even though we did not see your interaction with the manager it was an important part of the job as you mentioned in the video.

This is a case of what I call "white coat syndrome", where the problem is no longer happening when the technician shows up (the guy in the white coat, therefore the name). Happens all the time in automotive repair, and I assume most other trades too. Usually prior experience is the only reliable quick way of fixing these, otherwise you have to do like you did and go thru the whole diagnostic procedure looking for "fingerprints" of the issue, evidence that something is still not quite right. Evidence like that temperature sensor reading being wacky is exactly the kind of thing you're looking for. Around my area, if it's a car you get under the hood and start wiggling wires and looking for the green fuzz of copper oxidation, which means you have a wire that chafed thru, then corroded thru, and now only conducts current half the time. Intermittent issues then show up because one bump in the road might sever the connection, the issue shows up, then they go over another pothole, the circuit completes (probably poorly) again, and now the issue's gone. My dad has gotten really good at finding those kind of issues, if I have one I can't crack I give it to him and he's found it within 2 hours usually.
a little observation , the little battery that’s keeping the memory on the board is it good ? and behind the thermostat is there some back up batteries also ? strange it didn’t kept the last fonction activity , like if it forgot how it was before the power interruption
I would recommend getting a battery operated heat gun would come in handy at a time like this and checking other temp sensors. Also would work with shrink wrap as well edit my dyslexic brain left a few words out
Something to consider on these, we have somewhere in the range of 30 or so of these where I work. We have had issues with the reliability of the sensors and losing settings after power loss. A few months ago we had a guy out from Captive Air ...he plugged into every one of them with his laptop and updated the software. Since then we have had far less issues with them.
Great information our hood system started doing the exact thing after someone accidentally turned off the main breaker I will study this and put it to the test to find out if this auto system is causing the problem
I work for captiveaire and this is a common complaint. Most of the time the chefs are not pressing the button - fans on. They come in and cook something, temp sensor senses a rise in temp(you can adjust the offset but usually 10-25 degrees above room temp, the fans will come on) fans come on, they stop cooking , sensor sees a drop in temp, and eventually the hood shuts off and they don’t know why the hood shit down. If there is not a sensor bad or misplaced, I always tell them to turn the fans on by button, that way, if it happens again, we’ll know there something deeper going on
All of the tech support people at Captive Aire have been pretty good so far! I will be going live on TH-cam this evening 12/23/19 @ 5:PM (pacific time) to discuss my most recent uploads and answer questions from emails, TH-cam comments and the live chat, come check it out if you can th-cam.com/video/K3iG5q_Q_0U/w-d-xo.html
You do a great job with these videos, and your deductions are accurate. Unfortunately, there is a tradeoff with electronics such as these --- you get an absolutely amazing variety of options, usually with none or very little additional hardware (most of the time an extra terminal block here or there), many of which are extremely difficult or impossible to achieve the old-fashioned (analog) way. On the other hand, they can be really wonky in a very random fashion after a power outage or a power surge, whereas analog can be a bit more forgiving. You are correct in that there is an adjustable offset that is used to compare the hood temperatures to the room temperature, to decide when to automatically turn on. In this situation, if getting an accurate room reading is difficult, you can go into the configuration and set temp sensor #1 (the room sensor) to "preset", which then assumes that the room is 75 degrees at all times. A lot of end users like the auto setting because they don't have to bother with turning the fans on and off --- sounds lazy, but it's one less thing to worry about. You'd be surprised how often people forget to simply turn the fans off at the end of the day (which can also be fixed with activating the manual-to-auto option, as mentioned). Love the videos, and appreciate the hard work you put into this!
I've never been a huge fan of the automatic hoods, but they are becoming required by code in a lot of areas. I had no idea that there is a room sensor for the hood. I figured it just operated on a fixed temperature using the sensors in the hood. I don't see why that is necessary, but I'm not a kitchen hood expert.

Do your exhaust fans not complete the circuit? All of the ones here in Iowa that I work on complete the circuit so if an exhaust fan fails, the fryer/grill shuts off as well. So when changing belts or motors, we have to make sure they are not cooking or have enough in the cabinet to get them by for a little bit. It can be a pain, but it also helps because we it’s easier to know whether a fan is not pulling enough air or is not working.
I will actually discuss this on my livestream tonight! Worked on a captive air, they were shut off from the breaker and when power was restored the system that runs the automation permanently locked out the MUA and I had to reset the whole system with customer service and it took about 30 minutes
I think that is one of the most difficult parts of troubleshooting when there is no way to reproduce the issue and you just have to take what you know and use it to the best of your ability. Although tech support is always a gamble I have never had too much luck with that. I work in the IT industry so might be different as far as support goes.

Awesome troubleshooting skills Chris nice way to put your thoughts together of how everything works how space temp sensor and Hood temp sensor work together to allow exhaust Hood to come on automatically and disengage when temperature goes down. It makes sense that the sensor is not in the ideal location.

I just ran a similar call but instead of room sensor getting fooled, the hood temp was being fooled by a worn belt. Fan was moving so little air that the sensor differential would get close enough to stop calling for exhaust fan. So basically low air flow was resulting in no call for airflow 🤦♂️
Nothing is better than a simple, balanced system. All this electronic stuff is just a unnecessary money maker for the service companies and the manufacturer.

Since you are in the USA, you are using Fahrenheit for the temperature in your videos. Is it possible to add an overlay with the temperature in Celsius (for viewers outside the USA)?
Hey , Chris , good video as usual . Hey , if you can address one thing in the stream tonight , even though I can't be here live to my demise , How do you differentiate between gut feeling that tells you to double check , and going OCD and doubting yourself too much ? Cause I kinda suffer of some of that ! Thank you very much indeed 👍
We have a system that shuts off every 20 min, and we have to push the max air button everytime is that normal? When it shurs off and sometimes we forget and it gets a little smokey the fire alarm comes on, police come and everything, the engineers say it's built that way, is this correct?
I'm not in your business but I would schedule those belts for down time. Unless you have permission and they understand they may have to move to another cooking surface. What if something goes wrong. I am in the IT business and work on servers and it's almost the same thing with having to take into consideration the impact on customers operations.
sounds to me like the magical control panel at the hood is going wonky. good old junktronics. maybe the backup battery on the control board, possibly another in the control button panel? look like standard CR2032, used in many things including computer motherboards.
I really appreciate normal switches these days for sure! I get the appeal of the electronic stuff but it was much easier to diagnose a bad rely vs a programming issue or bad sensor placement in my case! @@HVACRVIDEOS I work on electronics stuff. It seems clear that the on-board battery is bad. When the power failed, the previous settings were lost or corrupted.
That's how user interface on the hood gets power and communicates with the control board. These are also capable of remote monitoring and controlling over the Internet.
The top two ports are for "communication", for programming the options into the board at the factory (or in the field, if you have the software & equipment), and also optional monitoring over the internet using an optional module. The bottom three are modbus (think of it as internal communications), used to work with HMIs, VFDs, communicating with other circuit boards, etc.
That is a correct assumption via temperature probes *in the hood* forcing on/off especially with frost on the roof, it’s cold outside, if the MUA is un-tempered. And as that air comes back in it can quickly trigger the need for no exhaust. Those room sensors are completely worthless.
Actually, if you were listening, you would have heard that the air IS tempered, and is, in fact, warmer than the ambient room temperature. What is worthless is the location of the room sensor.
@@shingledubber That was the air coming out of the ceiling grill from the air-handler into the space at the room sensor. Not the dedicated MUA at the hood supply plenum which would supply air to the hood and is the primary air that would go to the temp sensor in the hood. Two completely different air streams, he did not comment on the incoming MUA@ the hood.
My customer has a 20' hood. 2 fans He's only using the first 7 to 10 feet of it. Can he turn the 2nd fan off and seal it so it's not taking in grease. There's no stove appliances on that end, none.

It can be a pain, but it also helps because we it’s easier to know whether a fan is not pulling enough air or is not working.
that's usually interlinked for "fire safety" ancient building may not have that many tie-ins and be grandfathered in as such.
I will actually discuss this on my livestream tonight! Maybe relocate the zone sensor just below the equipment cabinet. Since it just need some kind of idea how the ambient temperature is.
the equipment cabinet looked to be mounted to the side of a hood though
I was watching one of your other videos when I got the notification for this one lol.
James DJ Service me too! LOL
Worked on a captive air, they were shut off from the breaker and when power was restored the system that runs the automation permanently locked out the MUA and I had to reset the whole system with customer service and it took about 30 minutes
Ridiculous...
@@douro20 So let me get this straight: someone who can't fix the problem calls someone who does fix the problem. Why are you complaining?
I think that is one of the most difficult parts of troubleshooting when there is no way to reproduce the issue and you just have to take what you know and use it to the best of your ability.
Although tech support is always a gamble I have never had too much luck with that. I work in the IT industry so might be different as far as support goes.
DANG those TRANES are HUGE!
I believe that’s a swag, scientific wild ass guess
Sounds about right!
These videos are gold. Keep it up, bud!
Thank you so much for watching! I'm just trying to share the little bit of knowledge that I have. Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays!
Thanks bud
Awesome troubleshooting skills Chris nice way to put your thoughts together of how everything works how space temp sensor and Hood temp sensor work together to allow exhaust Hood to come on automatically and disengage when temperature goes down. It makes sense that the sensor is not in the ideal location.

Did you pull the little piece of plastic of the LCD display between takes? I feel the OCD too!
In the HMI, pressing the top two buttons. If you went into factory settings, temp sensor config, temp sensor 1.
Assignment. Preset. Sets the room to 75 degrees factory Would have saved a lot of trouble
Your my Favorite TH-camr and I love your favorite word. “CHINGUS”
Great troubleshooting!
Looks like someone already labelled-up the temperature sensors for you to make everyone's life easier: 5:14 "ROOM Stat" on terminals T1A & T1B... etc.
Nice troubleshooting Bud ...

Nice job. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Great video thank you Blessings
Great job Chris !!! And nice sub count rising , pretty soon you will be making all your money from TH-cam instead of in the field lol so happy for you brother !!!!!

with power outages, Always ask how long power was out, how many times it went on and off and if it was sharp on/off or did it brown out!

I know why I subscribed...😁..love vids like this....dunno how much u make ..its not near enough..
Isn’t there an interlock that shuts off the receptacles behind the grills in the event that the exhaust fans don’t turn on for some reason?
Not always
Nice vid chris.
Great job
I just ran a similar call but instead of room sensor getting fooled, the hood temp was being fooled by a worn belt. Fan was moving so little air that the sensor differential would get close enough to stop calling for exhaust fan. So basically low air flow was resulting in no call for airflow 🤦♂️
Great video
Power outage can scramble unit configuration. Lithium Backup battery is a good test. 3V is Good.
Nothing is better than a simple, balanced system.
All this electronic stuff is just a unnecessary money maker for the service companies and the manufacturer.
Isn’t analog switching better? Because it doesn’t malfunction as much as digital switch.
Sir, which vacuum pump do you use in the 410 system? Single stage or two stage .plz tell me .
Literally having the exact same issue right now but im not sure if my hood has the automatic system
Chris I’ve never liked the auto switch on those. What’s your thoughts ?
Yeah i don't like them either, i prefer a mechanical on off switch
Im actually gonna discuss this on my stream tonight, I will be going live on TH-cam this evening 12/23/19 @ 5:PM (pacific time) to discuss my most recent uploads and answer questions from emails, TH-cam comments and the live chat, come check it out if you can th-cam.com/video/K3iG5q_Q_0U/w-d-xo.html
Since you are in the USA, you are using Fahrenheit for the temperature in your videos. Is it possible to add an overlay with the temperature in Celsius (for viewers outside the USA)?
Fault logic problem. I have Trapped Xducers. Can they?
Is it normal that the CaptiveAire’s hood being very loud?
Hey , Chris , good video as usual .
Hey , if you can address one thing in the stream tonight , even though I can't be here live to my demise ,
How do you differentiate between gut feeling that tells you to double check , and going OCD and doubting yourself too much ?
Cause I kinda suffer of some of that !
Thank you very much indeed 👍
You got it Sterling I have your question on my list!
@@HVACRVIDEOS thank you so much ! Made my day , sir 👍 cheers for that !
We have a system that shuts off every 20 min, and we have to push the max air button everytime is that normal? When it shurs off and sometimes we forget and it gets a little smokey the fire alarm comes on, police come and everything, the engineers say it's built that way, is this correct?
No that is not right
I'm not in your business but I would schedule those belts for down time. Unless you have permission and they understand they may have to move to another cooking surface. What if something goes wrong. I am in the IT business and work on servers and it's almost the same thing with having to take into consideration the impact on customers operations.
Are all of their newer hoods smart hoods?
Yeah as far as I know
sounds to me like the magical control panel at the hood is going wonky. good old junktronics.
maybe the backup battery on the control board, possibly another in the control button panel? look like standard CR2032, used in many things including computer motherboards.
Had to laugh at the painted black trane units that were sticking above the parapet wall.
Was this at a walmart ?
Can someone tell me why there is an RJ-45 connection on that board? I don't think Ethernet would be plugged into that.
Probably the connection to the control/display on the hood.
That's how user interface on the hood gets power and communicates with the control board. These are also capable of remote monitoring and controlling over the Internet.
All 5 of those RJ-45 ports are modbus. The bottom 3 also supply power which can be used for HMI's, the top 2 ports would be used for VFD's.
Great video, Thank you for sharing ^_^
can someone tell me what was the issue??
Maybe flame rod was locked out due to frost.
Yaktrax... don't walk on ice without them!
2 fans
He's only using the first 7 to 10 feet of it.
Can he turn the 2nd fan off and seal it so it's not taking in grease. There's no stove appliances on that end, none.
Still waiting for the r134 r290 video 😭

👍👍👍
you slip, you fall you stick your tiny arm out, your body says "lolz thats not stopping me", your arm is broken, and your still bruised up from the fall.
Why do you call them motor starters?? There contactors with overloads
A motor starter is created when you combine a contactor and an overload, its an old school term but still applies, I will be going live on TH-cam this evening 12/23/19 @ 5:PM (pacific time) to discuss my most recent uploads and answer questions from emails, TH-cam comments and the live chat, come check it out if you can th-cam.com/video/K3iG5q_Q_0U/w-d-xo.html

Most likely the fault history will display the date when you click enter on the fault.
@Sam S that could be, but in my experience if the battery dies there's no history what so ever.
