Text:
What shall I call this force I know
Who do I come to when I wonder
The space that holds me when I’m low
More than a parent, friend, or lover
They are Mover
They are Maker
They are Mother
They are Mother
They are the breath I see in cold
The ready muscle in the sprinter
They are the glitter and the gold
The steady heat lamp in the winter
They are Mover
They are Maker
They are Mother
They are Mother
They nod and know
They need nothing
They’re god and grow
They bleed blessings
They nod and know
They need nothing
They’re god and grow
They bleed blessings
They are solitude
They are multitude
They are gratitude
Gratitude
Laugh lines around the all-seeing eye
And I can lean up into the sky
Laugh lines around the all-seeing eye
And I can lean up into the sky
What shall I call this force I know
Who do I come to when I wonder
They are Mover
They are Maker
They are Mother
They are Mother
Program notes:
When I was working on the words for this piece, I consulted with my friend Reverend Alex Reegan, who is a trans man and interfaith minister, to create a text that I hope embodies the energy of the feminine divine that is present in any gender.

This song is living rent-free in my head
I don't know how many times I have come back to this one and "Time" that Cantus does. I subscribed, liked, hit the bell, and finally told myself, "You doofus! You should let her know how much these pieces mean to you!" So here I am. Both songs found me (as I believe they were meant to do) in one of the worst seasons of my very long life, and I want to thank you because they are helping me to hang on until things get better. Your poetry is as exquisite as your music, and the world needs both so very badly right now--as do I. I don't know how often you get to be the messenger, but I wouldn't be surprised to learn that it happens a lot. You were definitely sent. Bless you. 💖🌹
Well, if this comment didn't just make my whole day/week/life! Thank you, truly; it means the world to me to know that my music and words resonate with you. I hope this season passes quickly for you into a happier one, and hopefully I'll be there for you with more music to celebrate!
@@jenlucycook I would love that--and I wouldn't be surprised if that's the way it happens! 💖
I heard this piece for the first time last night, performed flawlessly by the University Singers of Syracuse University. One of the most gorgeous, striking pieces of choral music I've ever heard.
I heard this song performed for the first time not too long ago, been obsessed with it ever since
Edit: Just realized this is nearly identical to another comment here, lol
Lol, I'm so glad you're obsessed! Who did you hear perform it?
My high school's Chamber choir
Love it. Beautiful music Jennifer!
Thanks Scott!!
My daughter's high school choir performed this, and it's still my favorite that they've done. I cry every time I hear it, and the power they have going into "Laugh lines around the all-seeing eye" gets me every time. Just wow.
Inspiring!! The enphasis on words like "mover" and "maker" give me chills.
Same
And it is SO hard to do
@@whatthefridge1o1 I agree. I'm in one of Dr. Criddle's Choirs right now and he's such an impressive conductor.
I’m singing this piece with the Fargo Moorhead Choral Artists this month, and am honestly flabbergasted that such a combo of fascinating music and generous doctrine came out of BYU. As a less-than-ideal Mormon woman, I’ve had to grit my teeth through the works of some LDS composers … But singing this has been so affirming and so healing.
The WSU Philharmonic choir performed this somewhat recently and I've been obsessed with it ever since!! Thank you for making such beautiful music ❤️❤️
I'm SO glad you like it -- WSU did an amazing job with their performance; I'm honored that they sang it so well and that it connected with you! ♥
Saw this performed at ACDA and I've been thinking about it ever since. Absolutely captivating
In the recent one in Cincinnati?
I heard this piece for the first time this summer, when my wife (Kirsten Oberoi) programmed it with the South Shore Children's Chorus in Boston. HOLY MMMMMMOLE- this piece literally left me speechless!! Amazing work 🙌
