    Sorry for not uploading for a while, 30% of my footage shot here was corrupt. It took a lot of time to retrieve a bit of the material.
    Our craziest and most dangerous urbex adventure ever to the abandoned Soviet Space Shuttles in Baikonur ! The Buran project was the most expensive space project in the Russian history. The project stopped in 1993 due the fall of the Soviet Union.

    I worked with a very serious design engineer. He was involved in the development of this project. He told me a lot of funny and not so funny stories about Buran. He once said to me, " the Buran is a very large ship, but if you cast it out of solid gold, it would cost less than the real thing..." Unfortunately, he passed away almost ten years ago.

    • @KypraH_MaMaeB
      @KypraH_MaMaeB 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @tsolias27 Failure? Of course not. Buran will perform its flight brilliantly. Landing in automatic mode was perfect. He just wasn't needed by the new leadership of the country and was put in a closet.

      @@KypraH_MaMaeB It's been pretty conclusively proven that you guys did a pretty damn good job. However I think in this case, the Soviets might have been better off to go with a different design. Our shuttles were great overall, but the design had SERIOUS drawbacks and painful costs. I think it was also a good idea to rid the Buran of its engines and omit the solid rocket boosters. I never liked that we used something so volatile.

      By any account I've seen, the Buran orbiter was a fantastic shuttle. Its automation capabilities were very impressive at the time. The Soviets were never really thrilled with having a shuttle program - they just did it because they were scared the US could use one to drop a nuke quickly so they wanted something similar. They really had no other use for it. And to your friend's point, it was far, far more expensive to operate than their typical Soyuz crafts. May your friend rest in peace

      That's half the story, the CIA knew the Russians were copping the space shuttle plans from the national archive, so they switched them, and ruined the Russian space shuttle on it's first flight. We only glued the tiles on the back side, but on the switched plans, the CIA showed the tiles glued on all sides. This gluing allowed heat to make it's way up the tiles on re-entry, and warp the Russian shuttles aluminum skin. No more shuttle flights....comrade

    I'm a huge space nerd, so I'd like to provide some extra information that I feel is important. Specifically, as far as I can tell, the shuttle you entered was almost certainly 11F35 2K, which was likely going to be named "Burya" (Russian for "storm"). The other shuttle in that hanger is OK-MT, a test article that was used for numerous projects but may have been planned for a flight where it would ultimately burn up in the atmosphere. The space shuttle you entered was designed to go to space, and was constructed with the intent of being a fully functional spacecraft.
    I cannot express how incredible it must feel to see these two Space Shuttles in person, I saw the launch of an American one (Discovery on flight STS-131) and later was able to see the spacecraft up close. It's a shame these two shuttles were just left to rot in a building, they should be put on display. Sadly, the Soviet shuttle Buran, the only of these three to fly to space, was destroyed in a hanger collapse, and I wish more people would push for these two to be protected from the same fate. Hopefully this video will encourage Roscosmos to move them, or at the very least draw attention to it.

      The Russian security primarily monitors the site for local Kazakhs scavenging and selling off material from the site, but are occasionally catching tourists, too. They are often seen using black vehicles, checking the Buran hangar 3 times per day (09:30-10:30, 12:00-13:00, and 14:30-15:30) walking the perimeter and hanging out for an hour on each visit. They have firearms and dogs available to them, but are rarely seen used at the abandoned sites compared to active areas of the cosmodrome. They rarely check the Energia-M rocket tower, but you can watch them from above in either building if you're attentive to roadways and/or have an additional person in your group who can take on the duty. This place is very challenging to reach, but by no means impossible, and absolutely worthwhile. Having been myself, I recommend it to anyone of capability, as you'll have an incredible experience and impressive story to tell thereafter.

    I've watched this vid a hundred times, never fails to cause the hairs on my neck to stand, provoke goosebumps, and even break a tad of sweat. The Buran's front shots are like grinning reptilian skulls, the drone shots bring out the look of a flying creature entombed in some kind of "Valley Of The Kings" environment, permanently dead yet still very much alive as it rests in the desert-dusted peace of its former glory, all in company with the haunting background music as the drone seems to bow its head in grace to the ghostly-looking face and still wings, those wings still reaching out to fly, a flight of Eternity.

    When I see the abandoned Buran and facilities I just think of the cost, the time and the effort put into it all. It was state of the art at the time. Remember, on its test flight it took off, went into orbit, made re-entry, flew down and landed ALL BY ITSELF. Fully automated mission of a huge complex orbiter with up to that point only simulated flight characteristics. It was seriously impressive demonstration, this was the late 1980s, that's difficult to do now let alone 30 years ago! it must have cost the Soviet Union a fortune to build and they just shelved the whole thing. Their economy was so broken, the Chernobyl accident was possibly the final straw. The cost of that virtually bankrupted them and hastened the end of the Cold War.

    Wow this is a amazing I've only ever visited an abandoned park in my lifetime and it was amazing but you guys are on a whole new level! Wish I had the courage to do something as crazy as this but the thought of rotting in a prison In a foreign country would set me back.

    Nothing changed since 2002, when one of the Russian "Buran" Space Shuttles was destroyed when the roof of its hangar collapsed. That Buran actually made an unmanned/remotely controlled spaceflight in November 1988.
    Want to see a Buran shuttle up close ? Visit the Technik museum Speyer in Rhineland Germany !
