Nürburgring 1972 German GP, standing on the hill just after the bridge at Adenau. The Matra, on a lap by itself. You could here it from when it left Hatzenbach. Every throttle blip etc. As the car got closer, blasting downhill through Kallenhardt, the curves to Wehrseifen, the sound was simply beautiful. The crowd on the hill were silent, taking in the spirit of the moment. When it passed by, admittedly not as fast as Ickx, many in the crowd clapped, cheered, raised their bottles and drank to the glory of those who created that artwork. A perfect couple of minutes of memories... Romantic? You bet your butt it was.
The explanation of the unique sound goes as follows, if I am correct. Matra is a French aerospace firm, with access to lots of very high tech. The French government in those days wanted to have a French car and a French driver win Formula 1, 24 Hours of Le Mans, etc. So they funded Matra to develop winning cars & engines. One way you help make winning cars is to make them lighter than the competition, and one of the items where this could be done is the bundle-of-snakes exhaust pipes on a V12. Matra decided to save some weight by changing them from steel to titanium. The problem is, titanium is very difficult to work with, so instead of welding up various curved pipes for each exhaust, they cast most of the entire pipe out of titanium. Very light. I would not want to hear how much that technology cost. No one else could afford it. Anyway, once you have metal that has been cast, it can/will "ring" like a bell, when struck. And that is what happens on the racing engines., Each exhaust pulse causes the pipe to ring, and when there are twelve of them being struck. each one 6,000 times/min (@12,000 rpm) you get music. And that is the reason, as far as I know.
Standing at Mulsanne Corner, in the dark, listening for this sound to emerge. Through the trees. It grows and grows until the lights comes into view. Hard on the brakes and down through the box, but just as quickly hard on to the accelerator again out of the corner down to Indianapolis - Oh happy days! Nurse! Nurse!! (Now go and find Mazda 787)
"Léonard de Vinci a connu François Ier, il a connu la Joconde... Mais il a pas vu ça!" And if nothing is done against the autophobia, our children will not see it either.
@flashmaisters The sound is good because this is one of the greatest sounding engines ever made. Unless you've stood next toa race track and heard one in anger, you just can't appreciate it.
Holy Mother of God! That is the SOUND! How badly do I want one of those randy beasts? Let's just say it's a good thing I don't have any children, or they'd be up for sale...
Is this the same or similar type engine that they put in the F1 cars of similar time,, I presume by the fact they are 3 litres and around 400 bhp they are a similar type of engine...
+Blind Orbit Point well taken. However, I only posted (for historical reasons) a video that was up briefly online by the French auction house, Artcurial. If I could have posted it without music, I would have.
+Rick Foley My apologies for the hostile remarks as I figured it was the show's production, but wasn't sure. Since music override appears on far too many videos pertaining to professional racing.
+Rick Foley I agree, as there are certainly more race/Matra fans that would like to see this. The thing that struck my cord was that engine wasn't finished with its' tune, and they had to pipe that damn music in.... again. Unbelievable. Oh well. Again, my apologies for blowing a gasket on that.
Yeah! Facel Vega,Bugatti and Voisin`s are dreadful. And let`s not forget Alpine 110,the group B Peugeot and Renault, also grand tourer`s as the Citroen SM. Cant like that.
well I think we have to make big differences between french roadcars and racecars...French road cars are complete rubbish but french race cars are mindblowing!
hAHHAHA you didn't get it at all I was joking about this microphone... not that the sound is good because of it or not hAHAHAHHAHAA it just seem to be a really old fashioned microphone hAHAHAHA

Amen!
❤Few exhaust notes even approach the beauty of the Matra!
Amazing story! I think possibly the greatest sound in all of motorsport 👌
The noise of these cars will always put a big smile on your face.

you just blew my mind
so that makes the Exhaust a musical instrument
The French government never minded about sports cars. Jean-Luc Lagardère did.
+Reggie Johnson I just blew my load...
Sweeeeet

Maybe the best sounding car I've ever heard.
V12 Matra sounded as pure music.
"And the sound of the Matra was...just...spectacular....It sounds like power!"
Merci Maître Poulain pour vos commentaires. Quelle mélodie ce V12 Matra !!!!!

best sounding car engine ever!
Metro 6r4
I can remember the sound of a Matra F1 at Mosport, it was not the fastest, but the most musical.
Goosebumps! What a lovely sound!
It's aesthetically the most beautiful thing I've ever seen, and sounding too. Many thanks. Gérard lacey in Ireland.
Message to the Universe:

Nothing will ever equal the howl of the Matra V-12
@flashmaisters The sound is good because this is one of the greatest sounding engines ever made. Unless you've stood next toa race track and heard one in anger, you just can't appreciate it.
Holy Mother of God! That is the SOUND! How badly do I want one of those randy beasts? Let's just say it's a good thing I don't have any children, or they'd be up for sale...
I think ,that Henri Pescarolo and Graham Hill won in Le Mans with car like this..? Gorgeous pure sound ,like music or opera ...
sounds soooooooooooo good.
Absolutely gorgeous 😍

And the induction.
@@John-jl9de hummm
Add me as another person with goosebumps. Now, if I can only find the F1 matra video!
2:20 if you really need to skip the introduction/informative/commentary (i.e., if you don't understand French)
Fabuleux
....there's just simply nothing like it
@emmon72cz3x thanks, greatly appreciated...
Unbelievable...
Oh, quelle musique....
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
(I very strongly agree with you !)
Awesome sound! Which circuit is this?
It's music !!!!
AND THE SOUND OF THE ENGINE???
FUCK MAN!!!
Cosworth, that’s the way!
THE ARMAGGEDON...ARRIVES
Is this the same or similar type engine that they put in the F1 cars of similar time,, I presume by the fact they are 3 litres and around 400 bhp they are a similar type of engine...
le moulin ultime !
Matra should be at the same level than ferrari or porsche actually . But in france we don't invest enough in sport car brand .
@kirkconway
The french maked incredible car at age! But now... sick
They'll have to pipe in the that sound on the coming electric cars.
@topha007 What's a hover?
Matra V12 mucho loco
🎶👌🎵
this is how a car from hell sounds! Bloody awesome!
Wish my speakers could go louder...
Ese es el Sonido de la F1
Sonido inolvidable. Pero saquen el pianito, por favor
✌️❤️
Real fun starts at 2:50
Ain’t nuthin’ like it.
I'm french and have learnt english, so I can translate Hervé's speech if you want.
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Spanish knowledge comes in handy here
I can understand the better part of it.
Certainly helps a bit.
Yeah, but no, this is french, spanish can only help a tiny bit here
This car actually makes a 512M sound boring by comparison. Wow.
Stradivarius¡¡¡¡
What track is this -- Clermont-Ferrand (Charade)?
Too much tinkly-dingleberry French techno, not quite enough Matra V-12. Nice, nonetheless...
The old man came at "4:06" lol
skip to 3:25 for the joy
sounds like my hover
just listen shsh sh dont open your mouth just listen ,sound great well it was agreat car.
Too bad they weren't as fast as they sounded...
vive la france!!
@udubrx7 ?!?
Go to 2:43 to get to the reason you came on this video.
what a microphone HAHAHAHAHHAHAhA
maybe the car sound is good because of that huge freaking microphone the guy was using hAHAHAHhA
Don't forget.... it's a diesel....
4 persone hanno una prius...
or four people wanted Matra sound and ONLY Matra sound and no musical soundtrack attempting to augment that.
Thumbs down; the only music this film piece needs, is from the exhaust pipes.
You either document a race car properly, or not at all.
+Blind Orbit No harm, friend. Fortunately, the music fades out when the Matra is flat out screaming. That's why I haven't taken it down.
+Rick Foley I agree, as there are certainly more race/Matra fans that would like to see this.
The thing that struck my cord was that engine wasn't finished with its' tune, and they had to pipe that damn music in.... again. Unbelievable. Oh well.

commentaires un peu gaga,,,
This Porsche 917 comes close. Close. th-cam.com/video/FkP5Svl16Qg/w-d-xo.html

Great noise - takes me back.
But why on earth must we have that stupid plinky-plonk music with it? So dumb.
the Matra never sounded "good" in person and you would constantly check you ears for signs of blood.
hAHHAHA
you didn't get it at all
I was joking about this microphone... not that the sound is good because of it or not hAHAHAHHAHAA
it just seem to be a really old fashioned microphone hAHAHAHA
@emmon72cz3x ............ Nerd! Lol
