Fire Flame Meditation (Tummo) explained by Garchen Rinpoche

  • The Buddhist Tantric master Garchen Rinpoche explains an abbreviated version of inner flame meditation, as taught in the Drikung Kagyu lineage of master Jigten Sumgön (1143-1217).
    *Notes from Garchen R's teachings*
Abiding in the ultimate meaning is abiding in true nature, buddha nature. However, discursive mind follows after thoughts, wind energies in body follow after karmic winds, so mind and winds separate. In the body there are five principal winds (the navel being like the “royal seat” of them all) and three principal subtle channels: left, right, central (the central channel is the principal one). Drawing wind and mind energies into the central channel at the navel is the practice method for “merging mind and wind energies into one point.”
A particular method for focusing on the energies at the navel is the Vajra Recitation: mentally reciting the syllables OM AH HUNG, together with focusing on the subtle wind energies. Bringing together the OM AH HUNG recitation with the in-and-out breath allows wind and mind to mingle, freeing us from obstacles that arise from the distraction of winds going where they will while consciousness wanders where it will.
Sitting with spine erect, visualize in the central channel, at the level of the navel, a ball of fire the size of a lentil. Breathing in through both nostrils together, mentally recite the syllable OM. The wind energies descend the right and left channels, entering the central channel just below the navel chakra. At this time, hold the breath briefly, mentally reciting the syllable AH. Imagine or visualize the winds lightly fanning the flame that sits at the navel so it burns hotter and brighter, as you rest in equipoise for a few moments. Then breathe out through both nostrils together, mentally reciting the syllable HUNG.
“Within this practice, look at the empty nature of mind itself,” says Rinpoche; this will help stabilize the practice of mahamudra. We are concentrating on the fire of awareness at the navel, not following the in-and-out breath with our minds. Again and again we return to the flame, liberating all mental, physical, emotional arisings through awareness.
With this practice, no need whatsoever to consider the gross physical body. The three channels are visualized, but it is unnecessary to be concerned with their exact locations since they are immaterial, cannot be found in the physical form. Eventually we can focus our attention completely on the central channel, from which the right and left channels arise. Other than this, no additional visualization is required.
As to holding the breath slightly with the syllable AH: we are holding the breath mixed with the wind energies at the level of the navel, fanning the flame. Hold the breath gently by binding the lower orifices, drawing the lower winds up while pressing the upper winds down. This is known as the “vase breath.” This is not a forceful training but a gentle one. (Do not distend the belly while holding the breath.)
With the wind energies abiding at the navel and the mind left in its natural, unfabricated state, warmth will arise at the navel. When habituated, there will be no need to hold the breath again and again, because the warmth will allow awareness to abide naturally at the navel.
Results will depend on effort. Best time to train in this practice is at daybreak. The experience of warmth may arise in a week, a month, six months, etc. Eventually the experience will require no meditation but will naturally abide as mind abides, and the cycle of OM AH HUNG will become continuous, pervading our awareness.
This method of causing the mind to abide on the basis of warmth and bliss is extremely beneficial. When it is stabilized mind will abide in stillness without effort, warmth will be stable in the body, awareness will be clear, afflictive emotions will be burnt by the fire, cold-based illnesses will disperse, and so forth. The experience of bliss is empty in its nature; it is a mental arising, no need to fixate on it.
These notes, from instructions given by Garchen Rinpoche (Tucson, 2005), were compiled by Barbara DuBois to fulfill the request of a devoted student to whom Rinpoche assigned this practice.

“Above all, be at ease, be as natural and spacious as possible. Slip quietly out of the noose of your habitual anxious self, release all grasping, and relax into your true nature. Think of your ordinary emotional, thought-ridden self as a block of ice or a slab of butter left out in the sun. If you are feeling hard and cold, let this aggression melt away in the sunlight of your meditation. Let peace work on you and enable you to gather your scattered mind into the mindfulness of Calm Abiding, and awaken in you the awareness and insight of Clear Seeing. And you will find all your negativity disarmed, your aggression dissolved, and your confusion evaporating slowly like mist into the vast and stainless sky of your absolute nature.”

This video reconciles me with TH-cam, a place where you can find completely stupid and uninteresting things, and at the same time where there are teachings like this one, so deep and "secret" that you feel blessed and privileged to have stumbled upon them.
This Master exudes incredible energy, may he live a very long time and continue to transmit his wisdom-compassion.
    Thank you so much.

Polish on other hand has a letter Ą being the exact full sound Aum/Aom. I believe we do not have any word containing the calm soundless hum except the sound we do in winter when breathing on hands to heat them up ;-) and the name of this activity is huhać. But if to ignore the h as a soundless letter um is a basic root for words as umieć - knowing something after learning or have a skill state, umiejętnie - skillfully, umysł - mind, umyślnie - consciously, knowingly, purposely, in other version u is lost into "o" or "a" like pomysł = afterthought/idea, pamięć - memory. Somehow the root is related to word mięta - mint. Was inhaling mint helping not only in breathin but also thinking? There rest of words around thinking, memory, reason is around wiedza (snsk veda - knownledge, lead), powiedzieć to say is literally after-knowledge-ing.
IMO we are lucky to have so many branches of the our old lost PIE language - we can think pieces of lost meanings in irish/scot gaelic, nordic, germanic, italic, albanian, slavic, lithuanian, sanskrit, avestan/iranic. There is a bias & political agenda in reconstruction of the original words but if you are focused on the actual meanings tied together you easily find close words everywhere around north, south, west, east, far east. We are more lucky than Chinese who changed few times the way their words sound completely loosing the old context, meanings & learning their characters you feel as if words were made by a madman randomly adding completely unrelated words making the new words :-) Innovativeness in langauge destroys all remnants of own culture & understanding what it actually is. Variety in one big family is good, in different paths of evolution preserving different archaic forms and creating new but globalisation is like the chinese reforms, 1 big external language makes your langauge dirty, full of words that doesn't fit and basicaly is process of a cultural colonisation. Then you will loose the feel of your language and this process and process of starting thinking in other language will make your own native language feeling alien & not right - what will be the point of loosing own identity & crossing the line without going back.

Emptiness, Clarity and Awareness are also the three subtle veil in the Kabbalah. These veils are the aspects of the Essential Awareness, the "self-illuminating flame". Such essence, that resides beyond thoughts are our Essence, who we really are, so to speak, or speaking in a way that is easy to understand. Constant focus on that, as mentioned in the video, will free yourself from the grasps of illusion, shape and so on. Understanding all that, you become aware of all the subtle forces in your body, thus manipulating them, you'll be capable of great things.

@Dean Miller i am sure you don't expect to recieve the information you mentioned, in a youtube viedo. :)
the use tsa and lung is something the teacher personaly transmits to his student, when the time comes. the practice in this video, could be the very begining of that. however i assume, it is free, because it is simple enough for people to do and to benefit from, without getting into the complaxities (and dangers) of channels and tigle.

It is definitely a tummo, innerfire practice.
There are many ways of tummo practice, and this is a very direct one. We can do all sorts of visualizations and breath holding/stilling applications, and they all come to that place of awakened stillness / or not if missing the absorption into its purity.
Notice he is using the navel and warmth, the winds of hum, and analogy of the flame. There are many centers that can be used and many elements, or combinations of elements, each of which are more attractive to different individuals and abilities, that can bring the same resting into the sublime clarity; but they are not called tummo, whereas this is.

There are numerous tummo type practices, not just the yoga of Naropa but the tummo yoga of Niguma, various Dzogchen anuyoga practices, Kalacakra yoga, Lamdre, etc all work with the same principles of getting the winds to enter the central channel through inner heat elements (and they explain it in slightly different ways, with different visualizations etc). H.E. Garchen Rinpoche is known for teaching a lot of so called "secret" practices openly as well as for presenting more simplified methods. This Vajra recitation method is one of these simpler forms of tummo practice.

@@FearlessWisdom what you said is mostly right but I still believe the term tummo is misleading for this video. Here's the title of this video in a Buddhist website which I visited recently, "Buddhist Tantric master Garchen Rinpoche explains an abbreviated version of inner flame meditation, as taught in the Drikung Kagyu lineage of master Jigten Sumgön"
As you see they called it inner flame not tummo.

Veda means knowledge, Widzenie - seeing. Vairya - Wiara ja means a river/stream/flow - belief self. Wiara/ Wie Ra - belief, Ra knows. Radość (enough/full/given of Ra) is happyness, Rada - means advice, literally Ra gives. Kraj/kraina means last place, borderzone, country, ending, final destination.

Evergrowing I bow to the teacher on this one. I was expecting some conventional explanation including breathing exercises but this was way better than my expectations. I assume it’s tummo as it involves a candle at the navel chakra. I’m still pretty glad to find this explanation of the realisation of emptiness.
