It’s interesting because he performs the exact same line with nearly the same delivery in Seabiscuit. Just as impactful in a totally different context.

No father to support her and the family, additional trauma for her whole life and the inital suffering is still there. And how does it defended the honor? Nobody can take someone's honor, you can just lose it if you are doing bad things. One vicitm has a thousand times more honor than a million rapists. What would be then the police men have been killed too? What if people do the same thing for other crimes? In the end there will be killing for insults because of the honor. The way to the hell is paved with good intentions.

I hated it. Nobody on the jury gave a damn about Carl Lee or his daughter and it took Jake pointing out it could have happened to a white girl for them to realize they'd have done the same thing he did. They didn't change in any way and it was a horrible way to end what was an outstanding movie up to that point.

I saw this movie in the theater when I was 16, and I remember trying so hard not to cry at several different points, although during the summation I realized I could hear several other people ugly crying. This movie really reflects much of what the 90s felt like when it came to the racial tension in America. Also want to second what people in the chat were saying about Erin Brockovich--there's a reason Julia Roberts won an Oscar for her performance.
I saw this movie in theatres too. I never imagined that 20 years later things would still be as bad in America. I never imagined that 20 years later I would see an American president supported and endorsed by the KKK! 😔

@@trumphatesyou I tend to agree. In the foreword of the reprint I have somewhere, he says that it was his first book and apologizes for the writing because he was still figuring it out. I remember reading that and thinking that I'd read a lot of Grisham's books, and this one is probably my favorite.
The book hits in a different way. Like many of Grishams books this is one of the few movies I think is much better than the novel. Book spoilers… Rowark is immediately described as ugly, and there is no relationship between her and Brigance. Rowark has a relationship with “morally compromised.” Brigance is a severe alcoholic and his wife leaves him and doesn’t come back. Carl Lee spends a ton of time researching how to get an assault rifle from old war friends. The end speech comes from a juror member in deliberations, not from the closing argument. The end of the book isn’t so uplifting.
This is a real heavy hitter. Definitely one of the most brutal racial dramas I've ever seen. 12 Years a Slave was another, which was already reacted to on this channel, by the way. According to the trivia section of IMDb; the defense's closing argument only required one take. And the tears were unscripted. That says a lot.

Never has a movie started off so shocking, right from the get-go. This one stays with you forever. I saw it years and years back, and still can't get some images out of my head.

The shorter of the two bad guys, the one you mentioned having a cigarette in prison, is Percy from The Green Mile. Ashley Judd plays Matthew McConaughey's wife. Also Lucian is played by Donald Sutherland who is Keifer Sutherland's father. Keifer is the one who got the klan started back up. He was in 24 I believe. Now you must watch The Pelican Brief, also John Grisham, with Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington.
she really should watch The Lost Boys. KS was so damn good in that. and the Sheriff was Charles S. Dutton, another great actor that took a small role to make this even better. and the Deputy actor has been in tons of movies including the Bourne Identity.
If she chooses to watch another John Grisham film adaptation, it should be The Client. It is just as good as A Time to Kill with top-notch performances in it as well.
I liked when they had Deputy Looney on the stand and he said he'd do the same if it was his little girl, then yells out for Carl Lee's freedom. That said, I enjoy McConaughey's movies. I think you should watch Interstellar, one of my favorite sci fi movies with a good performance by McConaughey. You'd be mind blown and immersed with the story, visuals, and soundtrack. An underrated movie by Christopher Nolan, who also directed Dunkirk.

“He’s a dead dog. I don’t care who it is”. I don’t know if you ever figured it out but Matthew McCaughnehey’s wife in this is Ashley Judd, and if you’ve never seen Double Jeopardy (starring Ashley Judd and Tommy Lee Jones) you’d probably like it.
When I saw you reacted to this, I knew you would have trouble with that first scene. You could see the pain in your eyes. It’s nice to know that there are still people in this world that care about others the way you do!
It’s a very uncomfortable film to watch at times but I think the performances of all were superb. Whether we cheered for them or despised them for their roles, they played their parts with aplomb.
And if you want to see Matthew McC back in a courtroom (16 years later), check out "The Lincoln Lawyer", co-starring Marisa Tomei. (No Oscar for her this time, though.) BTW, apparently they're doing a "Lincoln Lawyer" TV series this fall.
"John Grisham, the one all the Dads like"?! That had me cracking up. I first read this book when I was in high school. This is one of the few movie adaptations that I really like. Great cast, great script and they kept pretty close to the book which is good.
John Grisham didn’t want this made in to a movie, when he finally agreed he had creative control over it, and the uncut version was 4 Hours long, him and the director sat down and cut it down to this movie.
Another great reaction to a very difficult movie to watch. Also, kudos on your video editing here -I've seen a few other reactions to this movie and they usually wind up truncating way too much in order to keep it YT-friendly but wind-up killing the entire tenor of the movie. You handled the balancing act with this one brilliantly (as usual).
She definitely has the best editor from my perspective. I watch a lot of other reactors and I find myself saying “Too bad this wasn’t Cassie’s editor.”
This movie I watched in theater 25 years ago was tears and even now no matter how many times I watched it. I felt so much emotional. And even more so because now I am a mother. I love all your reactions. Have a great day, enjoy life.
Two other films that would partner extremely well with this one: Mississippi Burning & Ghosts of Mississippi. The first is about the murders of Freedom Riders and the FBI investigation - features Gene Hackman/Willam Defoe /Francis McDormand. Ghosts is a courtroom drama about the trial of the killer of Civil Rights Activist Medgar Evers and features Alec Baldwin/ Whoopie Goldberg/James Woods. Both stunningly good and as intense as this film.

I've been curious about this movie and I'm glad I got to see it through your eyes. This was very much a To Kill a Mockingbirdesk movie that had a lot of harsh realities but heartfelt ones too. So thank you.
One of my favorite movies, john grisham is my favorite author. Pelican brief, the firm, the client and rain maker are my other favorite grisham movies, but there are a few more that i didn’t think were so good. 14:48 was my favorite scene…well next to the closing argument. And if you like the southern race type movies in the heat of the night with sidney potier and rod steiger is another one of my favorite movies.
If you would be up to it, I would like to highly recommend another race related courtroom drama with Matthew McConaughey. Steven Spielberg's 1997 film, Amistad. An extremely powerful and excellent film.
That was an emotional yet amazing reaction Cassie. I still enjoy watching this movie but there are scenes that still enrage me and make me sick. The cast and performances are outstanding.
One of my favorite movies, one of the BEST cast ever. Great adaptation from the book - the final speech by McConaughey in the movie was actually a juror in the book - this was McConaughey's big debut and people wondered if he could hang with such a powerful cast - and he showed he belonged
This movie was filmed in Canton, MS. At the time, I lived in Richland, MS which was about 30 miles away. "You hear they are filming a movie in Canton? It has Sandra Bullock in it!" Everyone thought that was so awesome lol. I was about 11 years old at the time and didn't realize how many more A list actors there were. Sam Jackson, Donald and Kiefer Sutherland, Matthew McConaughey.
While Grisham was writing the book, a new law was introduced that peremptories (twelve chances for both the prosecution and defense to automatically dismiss a potential juror without explanation) can’t be used to exclude everyone of a certain race, because of course it was being abused just like we see here.
How does that work practically? Can't you just lie and say it's for another reason? And why is discrimination on any of the other factors (age and sex for example) any better?
@@notthestatusquo7683 Because in this country there is a clear and undisputable history of deep racism. There are people alive today who's grandparents were raised by grandparents who owned other human beings. You're right, age, gender, and a lot of other factors matter too. But it's a pretty tiny statute to provide just a teensy bit of sanity to an otherwise completely broken system that is based on rules and laws that didn't treat everyone as a human being...and still doesn't as is evidenced by our entire judicial and penal systems. Our nation should be ashamed. The fact that we often get into arguments about that is just a sign of how bad it really still is.
As despicable a villain as Kiefer plays, you have to admire how much fortitude it takes to play a character so evil with such talent. And that's Ashley Judd as McConaughey very sweaty wife. She's in a lot of great stuff.
She was Val Kilmer's wife in Heat, that's where Cassie was trying to place her. I wouldn't say she's been in a lot of great stuff. She was hot for a minute. Went off the deep end.
Kiefer has a lot of balls. He's taken a few roles that most agents would advise people to stay away from. I've heard him say that he's met people who won't shake his hand, because they associate him with some of the characters he's played, which is pathetic, but I guess a compliment to his acting?
John Grisham didn't write A Few Good Men. But he's a lawyer and he did write the novels or treatments for these films: The Firm The Pelican Brief The Client The Chamber The Rainmaker Runaway Jury and several others.
Great reaction to one of my favorite '90s movies. This is often one of my go to films when people say Joel Schumacher was a terrible director. He wasn't. Batman just wasn't his thing. But films like this, Lost Boys, Flatliners, Falling Down, The Client, Tigerland, and Phone Booth proved he could be pretty damn great. You should react to some of his other movies, too.
Like most directors he need to understand the material, not try and mash it to his vision. Apparently Keating dropped out of Schumacher's Batman, when JS said in a meeting "Why does it have to be so gloomy?" Falling Down was great.
This is a movie that lives on its performances, and hits you right in the heart because the actors make you feel every emotion. And to think, Joel Schumacher made this movie inbetween directing Batman Forever and Batman & Robin! It’s hard to imagine a bigger change of pace and tone than that! But thinking about it, all three movies are about men taking the law into their own hands to right injustices… hmm…
Kiefer can play a bad guy so good, even though he’s such a sweetheart in real life. This one ☝️ “ Phone Booth”, The Lost Boys”, “Freeway” and and “Eye for an Eye” (which has a scene kinda like the beginning of this movie, that makes me ugly cry every time) with Sally Field. That one you absolutely need to see.

A Tie to a Kill was Grisham's first book . The publisher would not release it. Years later after Grisham was a hit he made them publish it. You cannot miss with this cast it was amazing !!!!

I like the way during her opening and closing monologue, the little round mirror with the decorative frame on the wall in the background frames her head perfectly like a big flower... Serendipitous, and wonderful; I love it! Also GREAT movie, of course; excellent performances from every member of a phenomenal cast!
Sandra Bullock’s character went to Law School at Ole Miss, where she met her husband who was a Basketball star and moved to Tennessee opened up a bunch of Taco Bell’s and adopted a young black kid that would become the inspiration for The Blind Side
A Time To Kill was actually was actually the first book John Grisham ever wrote, but it was limited to a few thousand copies and wasn’t well known . After the success of The Firm, it was pulled from the dustbin and published in paperback and the rest is history.
This was a great book and the movie stayed true to the book. A fabulous cast made the movie come to life. You are really picking up on a lot of the actors and where you have seen them. I'm glad you liked this movie even though it was about a very brutal crime.
One of the men shot by Carl Lee was the annoying cuss of a guard in the Green Mile - the one who want to see 'one of the fry up close'. I LOVE YOUR REACTIONS - so genuine and heart felt - sometimes I cannot stand to see you tear up as it just breaks my heart. Thank you for reviewing this film... it has always been a favourite of mine.
I studied this movie extensively during high school. I remember the teacher asked the class, do you agree with what Carl Lee did? She was met with a resounding YES! Then she asked, do you think he should go to prison? She was met with a resounding NO! 15 years later and I smile thinking about it.
This film was directed by Joel Schumacher. He also made Falling Down (1993) and Phone Booth (2002), two favorites of mine that I would definitely recommend! (You can skip his Batman movies though)

This is one of the VERY few movies I rate higher than its source book. That climatic speech in the novel is very different and not nearly as powerful. This is one of my favorite movies but, as a mom, can only watch every now and then because it shreds my heart.

Man, I didn’t remember how this movie started, that was too much for the faint of heart. I guess it serves the purpose but wow. Rest of the movie is great. I wondered why it was not in tv much. Now I understand.
This movie was based on a true case, Willie James Harris, DeSoto County Mississippi... The revenge plot was added and the "particulars" of the case had some interesting 180 degree changes....
As the KKK under its new banner of proudboys and oath keepers rise to power in the USA watching movies like this is a painful reminder of what the Republican Party wants the USA to look like.
Sahara is a better movie than fools gold, in fact its much better paced, and focused than the book despite the author trying to derail the production, and disowning it

I highly recommend you, the movie The Client (1994), also based on a novel by John Grisham, and also directed by Joel Schumacher with Tommy Lee Jones and Susan Sarandon, a movie goes along the same lines, about the investigation and trial of a crime and a teenage witness, For me it is much better than this movie.

Mississippi Burning is based on a true story and the events surrounding it. It is an incredibly intense courtroom drama as well.

The Client is great. I'd also recommend "The Pelican Brief". It's definitely my favorite. Hard to go wrong with Denzel and Julia Roberts.
I wish they could make "The Brethren" into a film. #1- Show how the twisted the Presidential Race is. #2- The stupidity of overblown jury awards.
This is another of my all time favourites. All star cast giving a world class performance! Still amazes me how brilliant everyone was in this film!
Grisham confirmed that 'To Kill a Mockingbird' was a big influence on this story. Which was his first book, actually.

@@trumphatesyou I tend to agree. In the foreword of the reprint I have somewhere, he says that it was his first book and apologizes for the writing because he was still figuring it out. I remember reading that and thinking that I'd read a lot of Grisham's books, and this one is probably my favorite.
The book hits in a different way. Like many of Grishams books this is one of the few movies I think is much better than the novel.

Rowark is immediately described as ugly, and there is no relationship between her and Brigance. Rowark has a relationship with “morally compromised.” Brigance is a severe alcoholic and his wife leaves him and doesn’t come back. Carl Lee spends a ton of time researching how to get an assault rifle from old war friends. The end speech comes from a juror member in deliberations, not from the closing argument.
The end of the book isn’t so uplifting.
His first book to read? Harper :Lee wrote the book.
This is a real heavy hitter. Definitely one of the most brutal racial dramas I've ever seen. 12 Years a Slave was another, which was already reacted to on this channel, by the way. According to the trivia section of IMDb; the defense's closing argument only required one take. And the tears were unscripted. That says a lot.

Never has a movie started off so shocking, right from the get-go. This one stays with you forever. I saw it years and years back, and still can't get some images out of my head.

The shorter of the two bad guys, the one you mentioned having a cigarette in prison, is Percy from The Green Mile. Ashley Judd plays Matthew McConaughey's wife. Also Lucian is played by Donald Sutherland who is Keifer Sutherland's father. Keifer is the one who got the klan started back up. He was in 24 I believe.
Now you must watch The Pelican Brief, also John Grisham, with Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington.
One more: the trial judge (Patrick McGoohan) was also King Edward in 'Braveheart'.

If she chooses to watch another John Grisham film adaptation, it should be The Client. It is just as good as A Time to Kill with top-notch performances in it as well.
I liked when they had Deputy Looney on the stand and he said he'd do the same if it was his little girl, then yells out for Carl Lee's freedom. That said, I enjoy McConaughey's movies. I think you should watch Interstellar, one of my favorite sci fi movies with a good performance by McConaughey. You'd be mind blown and immersed with the story, visuals, and soundtrack. An underrated movie by Christopher Nolan, who also directed Dunkirk.
Being #25 on Imdb's top rated movies of all time is definitely not underrated.

I don’t know if you ever figured it out but Matthew McCaughnehey’s wife in this is Ashley Judd, and if you’ve never seen Double Jeopardy (starring Ashley Judd and Tommy Lee Jones) you’d probably like it.
She was also in the Divergent series.
She was also excellent in Kiss the Girls with Morgan Freeman as police detective and forensic psychologist Alex Cross.
When I saw you reacted to this, I knew you would have trouble with that first scene. You could see the pain in your eyes. It’s nice to know that there are still people in this world that care about others the way you do!
It’s a very uncomfortable film to watch at times but I think the performances of all were superb. Whether we cheered for them or despised them for their roles, they played their parts with aplomb.
That was the best summation I've ever heard. I tear up nearly every time.

"John Grisham, the one all the Dads like"?! That had me cracking up. I first read this book when I was in high school. This is one of the few movie adaptations that I really like. Great cast, great script and they kept pretty close to the book which is good.
John Grisham didn’t want this made in to a movie, when he finally agreed he had creative control over it, and the uncut version was 4 Hours long, him and the director sat down and cut it down to this movie.
Another great reaction to a very difficult movie to watch.
Also, kudos on your video editing here -I've seen a few other reactions to this movie and they usually wind up truncating way too much in order to keep it YT-friendly but wind-up killing the entire tenor of the movie. You handled the balancing act with this one brilliantly (as usual).

This movie I watched in theater 25 years ago was tears and even now no matter how many times I watched it. I felt so much emotional. And even more so because now I am a mother.

Two other films that would partner extremely well with this one: Mississippi Burning & Ghosts of Mississippi. The first is about the murders of Freedom Riders and the FBI investigation - features Gene Hackman/Willam Defoe /Francis McDormand.
Ghosts is a courtroom drama about the trial of the killer of Civil Rights Activist Medgar Evers and features Alec Baldwin/ Whoopie Goldberg/James Woods.
Both stunningly good and as intense as this film.
The Client (1994), also based on a novel by John Grisham, with Tommy Lee Jones and Susan Sarandon. For me it is much better than this movie.

One of my favorite movies, john grisham is my favorite author. Pelican brief, the firm, the client and rain maker are my other favorite grisham movies, but there are a few more that i didn’t think were so good.
14:48 was my favorite scene…well next to the closing argument. And if you like the southern race type movies in the heat of the night with sidney potier and rod steiger is another one of my favorite movies.

If you would be up to it, I would like to highly recommend another race related courtroom drama with Matthew McConaughey. Steven Spielberg's 1997 film, Amistad. An extremely powerful and excellent film.
That was an emotional yet amazing reaction Cassie. I still enjoy watching this movie but there are scenes that still enrage me and make me sick. The cast and performances are outstanding.

One of my favorite movies, one of the BEST cast ever. Great adaptation from the book - the final speech by McConaughey in the movie was actually a juror in the book - this was McConaughey's big debut and people wondered if he could hang with such a powerful cast - and he showed he belonged
This movie was filmed in Canton, MS. At the time, I lived in Richland, MS which was about 30 miles away. "You hear they are filming a movie in Canton? It has Sandra Bullock in it!" Everyone thought that was so awesome lol. I was about 11 years old at the time and didn't realize how many more A list actors there were. Sam Jackson, Donald and Kiefer Sutherland, Matthew McConaughey.
While Grisham was writing the book, a new law was introduced that peremptories (twelve chances for both the prosecution and defense to automatically dismiss a potential juror without explanation) can’t be used to exclude everyone of a certain race, because of course it was being abused just like we see here.
How does that work practically? Can't you just lie and say it's for another reason? And why is discrimination on any of the other factors (age and sex for example) any better?
@@notthestatusquo7683 Because in this country there is a clear and undisputable history of deep racism. There are people alive today who's grandparents were raised by grandparents who owned other human beings. You're right, age, gender, and a lot of other factors matter too. But it's a pretty tiny statute to provide just a teensy bit of sanity to an otherwise completely broken system that is based on rules and laws that didn't treat everyone as a human being...and still doesn't as is evidenced by our entire judicial and penal systems. Our nation should be ashamed. The fact that we often get into arguments about that is just a sign of how bad it really still is.
This had me sobbing but it was worth the tears. I loved it and first time to the channel. What a blessing
As despicable a villain as Kiefer plays, you have to admire how much fortitude it takes to play a character so evil with such talent.
And that's Ashley Judd as McConaughey very sweaty wife. She's in a lot of great stuff.

She was Val Kilmer's wife in Heat, that's where Cassie was trying to place her. I wouldn't say she's been in a lot of great stuff. She was hot for a minute. Went off the deep end.
Kiefer has a lot of balls. He's taken a few roles that most agents would advise people to stay away from. I've heard him say that he's met people who won't shake his hand, because they associate him with some of the characters he's played, which is pathetic, but I guess a compliment to his acting?
John Grisham didn't write A Few Good Men.

This is a very good movie. I already know in some ways it is going to wreck her evening. It can be a very emotional movie.
Great reaction to one of my favorite '90s movies. This is often one of my go to films when people say Joel Schumacher was a terrible director. He wasn't. Batman just wasn't his thing. But films like this, Lost Boys, Flatliners, Falling Down, The Client, Tigerland, and Phone Booth proved he could be pretty damn great. You should react to some of his other movies, too.
Like most directors he need to understand the material, not try and mash it to his vision.
Apparently Keating dropped out of Schumacher's Batman, when JS said in a meeting "Why does it have to be so gloomy?"
Falling Down was great.
This is a movie that lives on its performances, and hits you right in the heart because the actors make you feel every emotion. And to think, Joel Schumacher made this movie inbetween directing Batman Forever and Batman & Robin! It’s hard to imagine a bigger change of pace and tone than that!
But thinking about it, all three movies are about men taking the law into their own hands to right injustices… hmm…

This was the first big movie I saw McConaughey in. He was swoon-worthy. The other was Dazed and Confused.

I'm glad that at least a few people on TH-cam are watching such great classics again. Many people only watch the standard films that everyone knows, but such films are becoming more and more forgotten.

A Tie to a Kill was Grisham's first book . The publisher would not release it. Years later after Grisham was a hit he made them publish it. You cannot miss with this cast it was amazing !!!!

I like the way during her opening and closing monologue, the little round mirror with the decorative frame on the wall in the background frames her head perfectly like a big flower... Serendipitous, and wonderful; I love it! Also GREAT movie, of course; excellent performances from every member of a phenomenal cast!
Sandra Bullock’s character went to Law School at Ole Miss, where she met her husband who was a Basketball star and moved to Tennessee opened up a bunch of Taco Bell’s and adopted a young black kid that would become the inspiration for The Blind Side

A Time To Kill was actually was actually the first book John Grisham ever wrote, but it was limited to a few thousand copies and wasn’t well known . After the success of The Firm, it was pulled from the dustbin and published in paperback and the rest is history.

This was a great book and the movie stayed true to the book. A fabulous cast made the movie come to life. You are really picking up on a lot of the actors and where you have seen them. I'm glad you liked this movie even though it was about a very brutal crime.
One of the men shot by Carl Lee was the annoying cuss of a guard in the Green Mile - the one who want to see 'one of the fry up close'. I LOVE YOUR REACTIONS - so genuine and heart felt - sometimes I cannot stand to see you tear up as it just breaks my heart. I legit watched this movie this morning. A very underrated Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew McConaughey, and Sandra Bullock movie.
I studied this movie extensively during high school. I remember the teacher asked the class, do you agree with what Carl Lee did? She was met with a resounding YES! Then she asked, do you think he should go to prison? She was met with a resounding NO! 15 years later and I smile thinking about it.
This film was directed by Joel Schumacher. He also made Falling Down (1993) and Phone Booth (2002), two favorites of mine that I would definitely recommend! (You can skip his Batman movies though)

This is one of the VERY few movies I rate higher than its source book. That climatic speech in the novel is very different and not nearly as powerful. This is one of my favorite movies but, as a mom, can only watch every now and then because it shreds my heart.
Simply "WOW" this film is so hard to beat for it's ability to mess with one's emotions and morality. Thrilled you finally got round to watching, loved the reaction as well as your closing words.

Ghost of Mississippi (1996) is another good courtroom movie, and a true story.
This movie is both brutal and heartbreaking at the same time and a important part of my childhood. Love your reaction to this movie and I also like your review after the movie that speech at the end hit me hard too.

I remember watching this for the first time as a 13 year old, that last line of McConaughy’s speech hit me like a punch to the gut. One of the first times I remember a movie affecting me so powerfully.
Man, I didn’t remember how this movie started, that was too much for the faint of heart. I guess it serves the purpose but wow. Rest of the movie is great. I wondered why it was not in tv much. Now I understand.
This movie was based on a true case, Willie James Harris, DeSoto County Mississippi... The revenge plot was added and the "particulars" of the case had some interesting 180 degree changes....
