Love these videos, thank you so much. I recently picked up the game and even though there is in-game tutorials I feel your content is a much smoother ice breaker into the game. So, thanks Chad.

I struggle to understand the concept of MTN and Hills early on when I was a beginner and had the same thought as yours but think of it this way.
What's the fastest way to traverse a short steep climb(hills)? By using high effort. Hilly stages are notorious for causing splits and if you preserve your stamina by using low effort late in the race then you can get caught behind the peloton.
The best way to ride a long climb? By pacing yourself. That's why the MTN rating corresponds to lower effort on a gradient.
How about medium mountains? By using medium effort
Ideally, the fastest way to traverse a road with a gradient is to correspond your effort such that you're empty at the top of the climb for the finish or you can recuperate if there's a descent. It's not good to blow yourself up (using all your red bar) before the climb is done because not only you'll be hampered, but you are also just wasting your green bar.
I believe the system is different now with medium mountain introduced so

Agree--I don't struggle with it now, but as a new player, it was confusing.
My understanding is that Medium Mountain (MM) sits at 90, with MTN at 85 and HIL at 95.

Hills, Medium mountains and mountains isn't counterintuitive at all. Look at the greatest outliers. A hill is maybe 1-2 kilometers. Col de la loze is over 28 kilometers. They may have the same gradient, but you will die very fast on col de la loze if you use high effort. Hills take a few minutes. You can use much higher intense effort. Col de la loze takes over an hour. So to me a lower effort for mountains is just logical.

You are correct. As a newbie, though, I didn't think about it that way. I thought of hills as requiring little effort, and mountains as requiring high effort. I had to flip my mindset.
