Managing an athlete's fatigue is one of the most important principles that guides effective programming. Cleverly utilizing Variation is a way to ensure that you are both satisfying the Principle of Overload and Principle of Fatigue Management without violating the Principle of Specificity. Chad Wesley Smith explains how to use Variation as a Fatigue Management tool.

It would depend on where the pins are affecting the Range of Motion but in the 3-4 range probably.

Curious on your thoughts for many of the usapl elite lifters who utilize almost no variation other than the big 3 and are still making great progress.

They're satisfying Specificity and Overload for sure which are the 2 most important parts of effective programming by far. In their current situations, Fatigue Management must be effective too (Variation as I describe in this video is just a way to manage it, volume/intensity is the primary way) but they will likely need more creative Fatigue Management strategies when they're 35, than now at 25 and more creative again at 45, than 35.
