yes, you are listening to a fun beat and then this part hits you. it changes your thoughts and your mood and then the beat hits you. and you are like "omg what are you doing to me?".
After 2 minutes, it gets real dark. She's so cryptic. She embellishes pain and deeper issues with frolic and playful lyrics, but there's often dark undertones.
@@pharaohmoses8836 You're way off. It's about a child not realising what goes on in "meat markets" or dance clubs where people go to hook up. The last part is when she older and she talks about the addiction many people have to such activity.
@@pharaohmoses8836 The beauty of art is that it's inherently subjective, therefore it is difficult to say any one interpretation is wrong. However, better interpretations can be achieved through an understanding of context and more evidence. Don't obsess over one line and look at the song as a whole. Taking a line out of context won't tell you the meaning of the song as a whole.
You are not one of my people. YOU are something special. Regina. Whatever it is. I don't think you even know. Keep doing it. Keep doing it. You are so sweet. And the most brilliant musician and singer on the planet. I actually love you. Really. No other musician gets that from me. I love you.
Regina Spektor is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! This song is adorable. As for the video, I think she know's what she is doing. This is awesome. It matches the song so well. I saw her live. It was just her and her piano, what an artist. She was able to capture the entire audience and we all just watched her sing and be AMAZING.
Regina's best video I think... It kind of represents her... Simply weird, beautiful, catchy, happy, passionate, and.... perfect!... she doesn't need proffesional videos to look and sound perfect!
I was under the impression that this song was about a young girl's misinterpretations of the terms "Meet Market", and "sleeping together". (I'm unsure of Ms. Spektor's age, but she must have been a little girl in the 80's). Then she grows up and finds out what they really mean. A song about innocence and the loss of innocence.
Actually. Funny thing about that. (Also, Happy New Year!) Regina immigrated with her family to America in 1989. So, while she was born in 1980, she didn't experience going through childhood in the US in the 80s. This song is really good about portraying that feeling, though.
This song makes perfect sense to me. It's the greatest music that humans can hear. This is music at its prime. A tour de force of amazing vocals. Regina Spektor, you are quite possibly the greatest woman to ever live! Your music is too good to comprehend, and it just evokes so much emotion! You my dear lady, are one of the only things that hasn't been tainted in this world! Thank you for saving my life :)
i love this. she added all the elements of 80's music(catchiness, feeling, vocal runs) into one song. kinda like a summary of music from that time. how in the hell does she do that?
i love how her songs are just a million beautiful sounds that just roll together in perfect harmony. her songs can sound like five different songs all in the first thirty seconds and somehow just be perfect. just what you need to hear and how you should hear it.
It's such a gift to be able to write every single song to be an allegory. This is a song so deceptively happy but about something so much darker. It's about how in the 80's casual sex was such an epidemic the girl who's become a sex addict who just can't seem to get her act together. She tries to become a prostitute "with her slip shown a little" but the cars don't stop. "it's been a long time since before I've been touched/Now I'm getting touched all the time". Such a good song for something so so sad.
I've never been good at analyzing song lyrics and poetry so I'm not surprised I didn't get this. I was born in 1992 so I didn't really know that about the 80s but I feel that it is still pretty rampant. At least from the people I've met.
God, you're SO spot on. "Like a drunk, but not". "There's a meat market down the street". And yeah, the dark interpretation couldn't be more Regina-ish... 1000 thumbs up.
Great song, very cute. I have an interpretation for it that makes it even more endearing. First, remember that Ms. Spektor was born in 1980. She would have been in the single-digit ages through most of the '80s. So consider this song is told from the perspective of a creative little girl trying to write a cool, mature pop song. She has overheard adults talking about how a local club is a "meat market". When she asked about what that meant, she was told that it was a place where men and women go to meet each other for romantic reasons. She imagines a place where people can buy meat and eat it, while trying to hook up with the opposite sex. She knows that men and women want to sleep with each other, but doesn't get the details...so she writes a line about boys and girls going to a meat market to watch each other eat, when in reality they want to watch each other sleep.
I love Regina's music! One of the few acoustic artists (some of her music) that can make me hang between sleep and being awake. Not too noisy. Not boring. Yeah, could be in love. Sigh. Ease my worried mind Regina!
"It's been a long time since before I've been touched, now I'm getting touched all the time, and it's only a matter of whom, and it's only a matter of when."
I'm a woman and I love this video. Why? Just because is Regina Spektor! She is a freacking genius! She is cute, and the lyrics of her songs make you think a lot. She is original and unique. There's no other meaning for this :) And why are you worried about what do we think about her? It's OUR opinions, not yours. So stop getting mad about it, relax and live your life happily :)
I love this song. Not really sure what the meaning is, but I love how compared to all her other songs, she shows her personality and has fun with it. Such a fun personality. :3
Zachary Quiroz I think the classic meat market was the disco where large amounts of booze was consumed and the "pick up" was easy, you know, questionable standards and next morning regret ( we called them parachute clubs - always got a jump - the morning after was escape and evasion). The innocence here is the watching of sleep, an act of adoration rather than lust. Great song.
"I went walking through the city, like a drunk but not With my slip showin' a little, like a drunk but not And I am one of your people, but the cars don't stop And I am one of your people, but the cars don't stop It's been a long time since before I been touched Now I'm getting touched all the time And it's only a matter of whom And it's only a matter of when An addiction to hands and feet There's a meat market down the street The boys and girls watch each other eat When they really just wanna watch each other sleep" One of my favorite bridges in any song, ever.
Hey ReginaSpektor! Do you think you could re-upload the music videos so that they're in a higher quality? I'd love to see this, Samson and all the rest in HD. Thanks! :)
I fulfilled my lifelong dream of yelling "solo!" during this song at her concert...it was absolutely incredible.
Hahahahha
You
Are
So sweet
That is indeed
I just have to do it in my bedroom
I’m jealous.

This woman is a genius!!!
At this point the melody gets so fucking intense. its so moving and beautiful! Never fails to give me the feels.
yes, you are listening to a fun beat and then this part hits you. it changes your thoughts and your mood and then the beat hits you. and you are like "omg what are you doing to me?".
Check out "Human of the Year"... The bridge hits me like a ton of bricks every time I listen to it...
Couldn't agree more. This whole portion of the song (bridge?) has been magical to me for the last ten years.
@@catherinesackman7633 Same!
I can never seem to run out of great Spektor songs
saamee
How does one even write songs like this? Like. Wow. I've never heard any other artist like this.
Crystal143 Try Vampire Weekend. Closest I know, or DramtiX.
Only REGINA! 😉
Try Emily Haines.You'll be surprised
I'd say Ben Folds with a female singer is pretty close.
I recommend fetch the bolt cutters album by Fiona Apple
for 3 minutes and 43 seconds i felt sweet and not bitter.
This one is sooooo underrated from her repertoire. Actually one of my favorites

Yes.
This comment is everything.
What is the christian reference? i dont see it
Lets not pretend there wasn't transitional music to get you there.

+Jack Spraker I agree to the maximum level with you.
Regina Spektor is on a whole different level than the rest of us.
I remember seeing this a good while ago, and back then I didn't agree. What can I say, time passes fast and now I am a huge fan of her.
I love watching her interviews because listening to her speaking is beautiful af
This is the most adorable music video I have ever seen in my entire life
Agree 😁🥰
I've been looking for this song for like 3 years and I'm so happy I've found it

Regina Spektor was ahead of the times and shooting quarantine music videos way back when
This clip reminds me of a very cute home made video to Brand New Key by Melanie, somewhere here on YT
I don't usually make statements like this. . . But Regina Spektor is my aesthetic.
aesthetic what
Fuck off, you ableist.
lol
She's one of the few musicians where the more I learn about her, the more I like her. She ain't exactly out of the Hollywood mold

Regina's such a dork and I love her for it.
I surprisingly really like the editing. She's so cute and I'm obsessed.
I cannot stop listening to this song!!! Regina is brilliant.
The fact that it isn´t in high quality makes it more 80´s!

It is very nice of you sir to explain that, I just wonder why all the time haha.
Thank you.
Wow, I never knew that. I always thought it gad those lines to be silly.
The way the layers of the melody build upon each other is brilliant.
