Replacing Old Winegard RV TV Batwing Antenna with New KING Jack Low Profile Directional TV Antenna

  • In this video, I replace our old Winegard batwing TV antenna with a lower-profile KING Jack HDTV Directional Over-the-Air Antenna including the optional mount and signal finder add-on.
    The compact, low-profile KING jack antenna is better suited for use with my large rooftop solar panel array. Less shading and the old antenna required lots of extra roof space when collapsed for travel.

    i appreciate your showing how you removed the old antenna mount. I tried doing the same on my RV months ago but gave up thinking that even though I had removed all the screws there must have been some other hardware holding the thing down. But now I see its just the adhesive and I should have tried getting under the mount like you did.

    I did mine a few years ago, I like the signal meter, I think the old got a better signal .Mine had metal under the fiberglass roof, had to drill hole about 1/2 inch bigger.

  • @JoelWelter
    @JoelWelter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    When I cleaned off all the old stuff from my roof (hit the low bridge), I went with an omni-directional antenna. It works pretty good, but I think those that can be dialed in would be better. Honestly, if you are near a source, either works well. They are both line-of-sight, I believe, so the difference is probably minimal.

    I have a built in antenna in our Casita travel trailer, but I’m thinking of getting an antenna intended for stick built homes. I think I can get a lot more stations, especially with a telescoping pole. Of course there are antenna size constraints.

    I hope you have better luck with yours than I did with mine, Ray. Several years ago I replaced my batwing antenna with a KING Jack model and was very happy with it...at least initially. Then while driving down the interstate the upper portion broke off (and got stuck in the luggage rack). From what I could tell the plastic joint between the upper and lower part experienced a catastrophic failure. After that happened I had a Winegard Rayzar Automatic installed and have been using it since then.

    • @LoveYourRV

      Yikes! I'll keep an eye on it and see if it starts to feel loose.

      @@LoveYourRV The separation could’ve happened due to multiple causes…a bird strike, for example…but I’ll never really know what happened. What I do know is that I stopped at a rest area on a sunny day, looked up and thought “hey, that’s weird, it looks like the TV antenna is gone.”, then went up on the roof and found the upper half of the antenna wedged in the roof rack at the rear end of the trailer. The Winegard Rayzar has had its own set of problems (the antenna kept getting stuck until I applied some silicone grease to help it turn easier) but hey, it works. I might replace it with the new 5G-compatible Air 360+ that is set to come out soon, though I’m in no hurry 😉.

    Will be looking forward to the long term test. To be honest, I've read more negatives than positives on this antenna when compared to the old style batwing.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've heard both good and bad at about equal amounts. I think basically all the RV TV antennas are all about the same. To improve upon them you have to get more of a residential type array. They are larger and people usually mount them on a tall pole. I often see them in long-term RV parks and that tells me folks have tried the RV antennas and found them not as good. So basically it's a trade-off between portability and best signal. This little antenna should do what I want which is to bring in some OTR TV now and again. The pros are it won't shade my solar panels and I don't need to remember to crank it down before traveling.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's odd, I would expect a directional antenna with a focused beam and mounted higher on the roof to do better. Maybe there is an issue with the antenna power or signal wiring in your RV. RV manufactures aren't know for quality work. ;)

    I know that boot came off where the cable comes down through the roof from my TV antenna and was getting water in. Got up there and filled it full of sealer. I must have some weird antenna. It works better down and the amplifier off. Even experimented with external rabbit ears. Not as good as what I was using, but still got some channels. I noticed how thin that antenna wire was on yours. Not much shielding, I would expect more. I'm guessing it works fine? I think that show was Night rider.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think since its such a short piece of coax it doesn't matter much the thickness. In the TV info panel is said Baywatch but maybe they got it wrong. Cheers, Ray

    Have you ever noticed driving by a large antenna and it was in the very lowest part of the valley on the ground under a mound of leaves? Height is everything for VHF and UHF freq. because these bands work on a line of sight transmission path. If path is blocked by a building or a larger object (like a hood of a vehicle yes I have seen people mount antennas under the hood of a vehicle) the signal degrades. This is one of those times that newer isn't better. Height is everything and on top of that they have changed the spectrum frequency since these new fancy antennae were designed and unless these units have been updated they don't receive the newer spectrum. The batwing antennae are just too dumb to not receive. Strength meters and not worrying about forgetting about retracting it when moving are nice, but these are much more susceptible to being blocked by something as short as an a/c shroud.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      On my old OEM 2010 batwing I had to add on a extra set of elements when things went digital. It was a small sized add-on array - amzn.to/3jVqxOL I think that's why they can now use the smaller size TV antenna due to the new digital frequencies using smaller antenna elements. I'm not sure how much a few feet of extra height makes. In this location it didn't make much difference. I'm already surrounded by houses. Cheers, Ray

      Here is a link to the manual that explains the connections - www.rvupgradestore.com/v/vspfiles/assets/pdf/OA8500%20Manual.pdf
      The antenna on the roof has 2 connections. One goes to the signal level meter and the other goes down to the cable outlet with the power button. The outlet with the power button has 4 connections. Antenna in, Cable in, out to the TV, and an output for a second TV. Cheers, Ray
