I have a few things to say about reindeer skins. Its a byproduct of meat production so buying them is saving them from going to waste, they are not valuable enough for someone to butcher a reindeer for just the skin. They float so you could roll it up and help you float in emergency. The skins that are treated and have a white skinside look nice and are very soft but not very water resistant at all. The good water resistant are the ones that are just nailed to a wall or a frame, and then left to air dry, you can easily distinguish them by the untreated skinside that will make crinkle sound when bended. The untreated skins ontop of a bed made of soft green branches is the best sleep i have ever experienced. You can turn them into leather when you have worn them out and the water resistance is weakened. Also i have never been cold when sleeping on reindeer skin, and i have slept on them my whole life when outside. The biggest downside is the bulk when rolled up.
I confess, i often put the speed up on TH-cam videos so i can consume more in less real time but not with you Joe, you're already speaking at my optimum consumption speed 😂😂
😂As a young attorney, I represented a number of union workers in some very small, rural communities. On more than a few occasions, the hotel accommodations in these areas were not the most hygienic. A sleeping bag liner, inflatable pillow, travel towel and good pair of shower shoes became a staple in my overnight kit.
I made a ground sheet with an old surplus wool blanket and a couple yards of oilskin fabric. One of my favorite pieces of kit. It's amazing how much something like that can insulate you from the earth. Nice video!!
The closed foam self inflating pad if you have the room . Store it hanging in a closet with the valve open . The loft/ cells will not be as compressed and will be much more comfortable.
Great breakdown Joe. I like a ground sheet, closed cell foam pad and layer it with other mats as temperature dictates. Also carry a couple drum liners just in case. Nate
Hey good morning my friend Corporal Kelly sent me the link to your channel and I subscribe to your channel. He said he’s a good friend of you and you have some awesome videos to share to the public.
Great content as always. I love what you guys are doing, it’s great to see options for all budgets…. and it nicely illustrates the principles behind the solutions! Keep up the great content- I always learn something and always have fun watching!
Thanks for stopping by , brother. And agreed I am surprised they are not more popular with how cheap and robust they are. Might ask what the going rate for them is Stateside?
@ I’m located in Pennsylvania. I first bought the two I have I first bought 2 on sale for around $20.00 for 2. U.S. I see from the same surplus place they are up to $19.95 each. As much as I have used them and how durable they are, I would consider $19.95 as a good price.
Hello. I'm most of the way through watching and we just switched over to the sleeping mat. I just thought that if you are talking about $ you should post an indicative price on the subsequent items. I am enjoying the info very much.
@lisamchutchison6572 hey 👋. I did want to do that, but they vary so much in price depending on whether it is a European brand being sold in America or vice versa. I averaged em out and left the links to the average prices in the description of the video. Thank you for the kind words, and if there is any content you would like to see in the future, let us know. Enjoy the journey 📸🌄🌳🌲🌴
@davef5916 hey 🤜🤛 I use it in my.summer sleeping bags, but I have never used it as a stand-alone piece of sleeping equipment. If I do, it's mostly as a Scarf or something to keep the wind off my legs around the fire. That's not say it wouldn't work. I just run cold.
Great tip about the Reindeer hide!🦌 Also wrap your pad inside instead of hanging it outside!! Definitely a new sub.🎉🎉 Id rather sleep on the ground, more stealthy that way!! Also my tiny camp doesn't have a floor either!😂😂 I'm looking for ways to insulate the "floor"😂 Plastic and other insulators will be a good solution...🎉
Awesome ! glad you liked the tips. I prefer sleeping on the ground because I am shaped like a barrel and when I sleep in hammocks and the such I always wake up so sore.

I used to work on the power lines so I had the same problem. Never thought of shower shoes haha. That would have saved me many a pair of socks

great run down! have you ever used the carinthia liner in summer instead of a sleeping bag? Wondering what temps it might work down to if so.
