  • I am possibly the world's greatest Louise Homer fan. This gloriously talented and absolutely lovable contralto was one of the most popular singers of what is commonly called the golden age of opera. She had one of the longest Met careers of any classical singer in America, and was a great favorite not only of the Met audiences but of music lovers of all kinds who enjoyed her 144 recordings, made between 1903 and 1927, which embraced not only classical music but many popular Victorian age parlor songs and hymns of the day. She was in all ways an admirable artist and human being.

Not only does Louise Homer sing it beautifully, she gives the piece the triumph and joy Handel originally intended. What a marvelously glorious recording.

Where, oh where have all the contraltos gone. A rich bottom, no gear shifting and no creation of a tone. Wonderful diction!

Excellent. I'd not known of this great contralto until tonight--this X-mas Eve. A great gift. Thank you.

So glad to find these recordings! I grew up in Winter Park, Florida where she retired, and studied with her rehearsal accompanist, Phyllis Sias. I used to know a person who had seen her often at the Met and would play me recordings of her on her ancient record player. An artist to cherish.

I am her great-granddaughter, and I love hearing the sound! I only have LPs. Do you by chance have her singing any of Sidney's compositions?

Sorry, but I checked ever place I know, and while Louise Homer did record some recordings of songs by her husband, most were not published, and the few that were seem to be in the library of Congress. I tried to download two, but it is not permitted. She recorded 'Requiem, 1912), The Dog Lies in The Kennel, 1912, Sing me a song of a lad who is gone, 1903, and A Banjo Song, 1911. I'm sure there is a collector someplace who may have one, but it would be a prize collection, and no one has put any on TH-cam. You might try Ebay. Edmund

Ms Kidwell: tell me, how has your search for more recordings progressed? A great contralto, indeed.

Another reason to appreciate Louise Homer: the influence she had on her young nephew, Samuel Barber. Would he have been inspired to write so many wonderful songs if his aunt wasn't a great singer?

@Bivolari Yes, she's wonderful. I absolutely adore her....always have. And you are right...where, oh where have they gone.

They are misunderstood in wrong voice categorys, some of them sing Mezzo’s roles, and some of them even soprano’s roles, for example Julie Andrews, she was definitely a Contralto! The women’s voice are very complicated, so the ,,teachers” ruin many talented singers vocal folds, unfortunately.

O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion,
get thee up into the high mountain.
O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion,
Get thee up into the high mountain.
Get thee up into the high mountain.
O thou that tellest good tidings to Jerusalem,
Lift up thy voice with strength, lift it up, be not afraid,
Say unto the cities of Judah,
Say unto the cities of Judah:
Behold your God, behold your God!
Say unto the cities of Judah:
Behold your God, behold your God, behold your God!
O thou that tellest good tidings to Zion,
Arise, shine, for thy light is come.
Arise, arise, arise, shine, for thy light is come.
And the glory of the Lord,
The glory of the Lord is risen, is risen upon thee, is risen, is risen upon thee.
The glory, the glory, the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.

Homer’s voice comes through even better in this later acoustical recording than for example her work with Caruso some10 years previously. No surprise of course. Real operatic contraltos at any time are rare indeed & Ms. Homer was the real thing & took care of her wonderful instrument right up to her retirement. I know Samuel Barber was composing already before his aunt had retired but I wonder if Homer might have sung. & recorded any of his early songs. He, himself, recorded his own DOVER BEACH & I wonder if Homer might have taken a crack at it.

Alas, no...you must search for it and add it to your collection; also, the "Fac ut portem" from Rossini's Stabat Mater...two MUST HAVE records by the great Homer!!!

  • @EdmundStAustell

@paulostroff99 No, she certainly wasn't! Another great favorite of mine. She and Louise Homer were good friends, and did wonderful religious recordings together, among other things. Fine, upstanding people, and great artists. The best of what America was about at that time.
