Acura as a brand needs a complete overhaul from its R&D, management department and completely revamp their entire lineup. The TLX is a good start, but everything else is lackluster. Bring back the type-s for crying out loud.

The few videos I have watched with this presenter (forget name). His reviewing of each car is always so solid and I had a KB1 RL probably the most modded on US market to perfection. Watching your acceleration run, I think I should point out that even in Sport Mode you have to select 1st gear manually. Even if your floor it in Sport Mode, you are going to start off in 2nd gear. The 47 HP motor that is attached to the automated manual will pre-select gears both up and down, and it can downshift more than one gear when necessary. The front electric motor also serves to keep the car moving between gears, which makes it feel smoother than something like the Porsche PDK.

  • @dannnnnny
    @dannnnnny 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

The dual screen is not a bad idea. It is Honda/Acura's poor execution of the software UI/UX that bugs everyone.
Look at Land Rover and the new Audis. They have dual screen but the execution is much better which makes it look and feel modern/expensive.

  • @WillMoon

Acura will not regain any of its' former relevence until two things happen: 1. They need an everyman's sport coupe like the old RSX and 2. they need to implement their precision cockpit concept ASAP. This car is trying to be sporty, trying to be precision crafted performance, but comes off as a car for some old geezer who couldn't quite afford a 7 series or a Mercedes S class.

Acura has done little to no marketing on the RL/RLX since 2005; when the RL re-design came out. Back in 2007 I was contemplating between a Cadillac STS, 5 Series BMW, Infiniti M and Lexuse GS350. The RL was barely a blip on the radar. I knew more about the car that a couple Acura salesmen I met. And at both dealerships, there were only two to test drive. It was a very nice car but when it came down to spending my money, I didn't feel Acura would have my back if there were warranty issues. I went with the Lexus GS and it was a good decision. Still use the car as a secondary vehicle.

I think this is a good review and most of the criticisms are spot on. I currently drive 2015 RLX with P-AWS and have truly enjoyed the car. Just add a couple of comments:
    1) Every reviewer wants to complain about the dual screen arrangement. After living with the car for even a week, you come to understand that the lower display is not intended to be a display at all but a configurable control panel. It works very well at cleaning up the blight of buttons you might see in something like a Genesis or older Acura. That said, a software update to what is currently used in the 2019 TLX would be appreciated.
    2) I agree with earlier comments that this car is too expensive new, but it is a great deal when it's about 2 or 3 years old. I went to a Honda dealer to buy a new Accord touring and came away with this car for $5k less. I've been very happy with it.
    3) Some of us have grown out of being boy racers. "Sporty" cars do nothing but beat us up on pot-hole ridden roads. I've come to appreciate smooth and quiet. The RLX does this very well without being a boat.
    4) Yes, RLX is an older design desperately in need of an update, but that does not inherently make it a bad car...just one that you might not want to spend $62k on when the new Lexus ES350 is so good ;)
I'm looking forward to its replacement. I do hope they bring back the Legend name. That said, it would likely be 2023 or 2024 before a used one shows up that I can afford.

I own a 2016 hybrid. It is a demon!!! Extremely fast, 5.0 sec to 60, 80-100 in one second and handles like a sports car, yet comfortable and utterly silent. The review missed that when all 4 motors are in use it is 4 wd. Acura’s have always been boring to look at and anonymous. Police don’t see it. I am a driver more than someone that goes only for the looks of a car. The RL,RLX are Acura’s test vehicles, the driving tech filters down to lesser models after it is shown to work properly in a low volume vehicle. Acura never expected or cared if it sold many. My opinion is biased of course since this is my 4th Legend.

I own an base 2014 RLX and this has a nicer front and rear as you said but basically the same car. We bought it as a CPO 3 years ago cheaper than getting a new loaded Accord, we think we made a great choice since we wanted a unique luxury car, and because it didn’t sell well it is. It has most of the features we want but I still feel like it is basically a larger Accord with the same engine. The interior is nice with awesome rear seat room. But with all that said Acura is really digging a deeper hole for itself by only doing a refresh and calling it “ all new”(just like the “ new “ TLX and MDX), even people that are not into cars like us expect a little more these days and Acura is lagging behind everyone else, but they are blind to see that by all the soccer moms buying MDXs every year...

You said, "not something I'd want to push to its limits." As long as you are smooth, the car will allow a remarkable amount of vectoring out of the 72 HP on the rear wheels. On a traction circle with my car, you will notice that the nose is pointed to the inside...the car allows a mild oversteer. If the car detects a lift, jerky steering, or other unpredictable actions, the computer will kick in and straighten the car...which is not something you necessarily want. As long as you are smooth, the car allows quite a bit of neutral to even oversteer attitude.
There's no disguising that it is a big heavy car, however. It's not a sports car, but it will surprise you with its aggressive attitude when you want it...and as long as you're smooth.
The delay you noticed when you suddenly floored it: A lot of things have to happen in a hurry. The car has to pick which injection system (it has direct and manifold injection systems), it has to switch on the ICE if it's not on, it has to pick the map it's going to use and get all four motors engaged, and decide the attitude of the VCM rocker arms! It's not slow...but that delay is perceivable and it will annoy some people.

This is the only Acura that can pull off the Grill and the new design Acura is trying to in-place (Why this car doesn't sell Acura doesn't push it, like they do that ugly TLX all over FB and YT). Honestly They should push more of these (because the TLX is not it; Acura needs to bring back the TL TypeS).

Purchased a CPO 18 RLX hybrid back in Dec/2019 with 7,200 miles. Perfect condition, always get +29 mpgs in city or hwy driving, sleeper muscle car, and very comfy. It is a vehicle you get if you love to drive and lean toward performance. All the greatest cars in history are based on performance and how they make you feel; not, on tech like 30 way adjustable massaging seats, back up cam quality, or wireless Carplay. It can turns heads and I get people asking "what type of car this is" or "that is a beautiful car". It stands out in a world full of trucks and SUVs. Love it even more with current gas prices and I get 3-5 better mpgs compared to my old 205hp 06 TSX with a 2.4L I-4.

This is what Autoweek.com said about Acura...so true!!
"Unfortunately for Acura, most of those customers are not buying Acuras. They are instead buying, in order: the Mercedes E-Class (50,896), BMW 5-Series (32,408), Audi A6 (18,686), Lexus GS (14,878) and, heck, 5,872 people even bought Infiniti Q70s last year. How bad are sales of the Acura RLX? One thousand four hundred seventy eight in the last calendar year. Mercedes sells almost 35 times as many E-Classes."
