    Im not sure if its just a Los Angeles thing but here we've got family run donut shops in every street corner. Dunkin and Krispy Kreme are very rare here since those mom and pop shops are usually 10x better and dont have the chemical processed taste that the big franchises have. They are a local treasure for sure.

    • @faeriesmak

    What you called a "jam donut" is actually a dividing food in Germany. In a lot of places it is called a "Berliner" but in Berlin it is called a "Pfannkuchen". Which in most parts of Germany is the word for pancake but in Berlin you call a pancake "Eierkuchen" (word by word translation: egg cake). Also the "jam donuts" are called "Krapfen" in the south of Germany. This concludes my little rant of how jam donuts and pancakes are called in Germany and if any non Germans could follow this explanation I am impressed.

    Love all your videos! Just wanted to mention for cup measurements you can actually get measuring cups so that you dont use any random cup. Most recipes are usually referencing using measuring cups and they usually come in a set of 4 (1 cup, 1/2 cup, 1/3 cup, and 1/4cup). You'll find them at most kitchen stores or just on amazon.

  • @lilianneweinhandl8493

    I'm Dutch and also prefer recipes that work with grams and ml, but cups and spoons work with standard measurements and you can just buy a set of spoons and use your measuring cup that you'd use to measure amounts of fluids instead of a set of cups if you don't want to invest in those. What's 1 cup for me is one cup for everyone else.

    grace you should really try to get your hands on a set of american measuring cups, because they're standardized. when a recipe calls for a cup of something they don't just mean any random cup, they mean a standardized american 8oz measuring cup

    • @graceschammer6384
      @graceschammer6384 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey😊 even if she uses the standardised cup measurements the tecnique used to fill the cup can yeild different amounts. If you spoon the flour or ingredient in to the cup measurement, it will be aerated and have less flour. However, if you scoop the flour straight out of the bag with the cup measurement it will be more compacted and therefore have more flour in the cup. Using grams reduces this margin for error. Hope this clears the cup vs weight debate.

    • @eleanor_anne
      @eleanor_anne 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@graceschammer6384 I mean, it's not a debate, I'm just saying that if she did get a set of standardized american measuring cups she'd be able to make recipes without having to convert them. gram measurements are always going to be more accurate, but if you use a standardized cup and fill it the way you're meant to (which is whatever way does not compact the ingredient, unless otherwise stated, like you said) then you should get generally the same result as the author of the recipe.

    It's so weird that in England you go down the stairs on the left? In North America you do down the right cause that's how we drive. Didnt know it applied to stairs too!

    A word on the Boston Cream donut: It is based on the dessert Boston Cream Pie, which is actually a cake lol. I know...crazy! But it's a real rich custard filling between 2 buttery cake layers with just a round disk of chocolate on the top layer. Seriously. Now what I prefer is the twist on the elements known as an eclair. Using the best buttery custard in a flakey pastry, topped with quality chocolate icing, a great eclair will melt in your mouth. Hope this gives you some good info. Great review of DDs, Grace!

    The “donut holes” are called “munchkins” here in the US (especially where I’m from- New England). And for the record, I don’t believe we have Biscoff anything here- edit: apparently you can buy it on Amazon (big surprise).

    I live in NY and loooove Dunkin. We don’t have Rocky Road, White Chocolate, Biscoff (sounds amazinggg), Creme Brûlée, Coffee, strawberry (creme filled) or the “cartoon donut.” We have the chocolate cream equivalent during Valentine’s Day and it’s shaped like a heart! ❤️🍩

    When I lived in the UK for 6 months, I tried Dunkin donuts for the first time. There was a sale for if you buy 2 boxes of 12, you get the other one for free. So with my friend we each got one box. I ate the whole box that day, and never felt that sick lol. And never had Dunkin donuts ever since 😂😂😂

    • @summersoul3
      @summersoul3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The main problem is a cup measure allows more variation. I could pack the flour in, and somebody else could keep it fairly loose, resulting in different amounts / weights of flour for one baker versus another. As baking is precise, it's much better to have a recipe in weights

    Here in America, it really depends what time of day you buys the donuts. When they’re freshly baked they are pillowy and soft and melt in your mouth. Otherwise they are more bread like and not so good.

    Interesting to see the UK version of DD, here in the US MY FAV DD donut was not in your box, it's a powdered donut w/WHITE CREAM filling. I wish they would make this w/just the white cream inside and a drizzle of chocolate on top, because w/the powdered sugar, it's just too sweet for me. If I can remember Krispy Kreme made just the glazed donut (they opened about a MILLION stores here in the US, then they all closed quite swiftly, now you cannot find but one or two per city). #odd LOVE seeing your London travels and you trying all the bits & bobs on offer! #subscribed

    I feel the need to comment on the donuts...each Dunkin Donuts store is different. The filling looks low on some of them, and they only carry about 5 types of filling so you're not likely going to get much variety with limited equipment.
    The chocolate munchkins are cake based, while the glazed is a yeast based (hence the bread texture).
    I've never made any of those specialty donuts you tried, but Americans at my store tend to only like the same classics like bismark and boston creme. Never did creme brulé or that Apple filled one, only apple fill I do is the fritters and apple n spice (cinnamon sugar powdered).
    Colored icing is usually white vanilla icing with food coloring. Only the pink icing is flavored for strawberry.
    The only donut actually baked are glazed ones, just to melt the glaze. Otherwise it would take an entire day (24 hours) to make 100+ dozen donuts from scratch, every night.
    It's a fun job, so long as everything is working, the just-brought-in-inventory isn't in your way, and you don't get held up taking supplies to a neighboring store because someone forgot to order enough to get them through the week.
