Labour leader Tony Blair, the man widely topped to become Britain's next prime minister has promised to build a new constructive relationship with Europe if he comes to power.
In a keynote speech at Labour's Annual Party Conference - his last before the next general elections - Blair mapped out his vision for Britain's future under a Labour government.
Britain's Prime Minister, John Major - leader of the Conservative party - must call an election within the next eight months. Opinion polls are predicting a Labour win for the first time in 17 years.
Blackpool in the north coast of England is a favourite spot for political party conferences.
And it was here that Labour leader Tony Blair made his final conference speech before the next general election. Blair - who's widely tipped to become Britain's next prime minister, rallied his troops behind the Labour banner and mapped out his vision for the future under a Blair government.
The Labour leader received a rapturous welcome when he appeared on stage.
The Labour party is currently ahead in the opinion polls - if it topples the ruling Conservative party at the next general election, Britain would have its first Labour government for 17 years.
Tony Blair had a message of unity for the party faithful.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Forget the past. No more bosses versus workers. We are on the same side, the same team and Britain united will win."
SUPER CAPTION: Tony Blair - leader of Britain's Labour party
In his rousing keynote speech Blair vowed his government would rectify a number of issues.
Among the Labour leaders' top priorities would be improving British education standards.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Ask me my three main priorities for government and I tell you education, education and education."
SUPER CAPTION: Tony Blair - leader of Britain's Labour party
The fight for education was the main plank of Blair's speech and he was adamant his party would rejuvenate a system that in Britain has suffered lack of funding and constant cuts for years.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"And I tell you my vision of the future. I would like a state education system in Britain so good, so attractive that the parents choose to put behind us the educational apartheid of the past, private and state, and I don't believe anything would do more to break down the class divides that have no place in a modern country in the 21st century."
SUPER CAPTION: Tony Blair - leader of Britain's Labour Party
The Labour leader promised to take action over gun ownership following the Dunblane tragedy where 16 schoolchildren were shot dead by a gunman.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Well if they had been in that gym, if they had talked to those parents sitting on those tiny chairs where once their children had sat, they would have been emotional too. I believe that we should ban the private ownership and possession of handguns.
SUPER CAPTION: Tony Blair - leader of Britain's Labour Party
Blair also pledged to push Britain's relationship with the European Union to the top of his election campaign.
    SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Britain has the Presidency of the European Union in the first half of 1998. One of our key priorities in that Presidency will be the completion of the single market. Well today even in opposition I set a deadline - June 1998 - the end of the British Presidency for the completion of the single market in Europe."
SUPER CAPTION: Tony Blair - leader of Britain's Labour Party
Blair's speech met with an enthusiastic response by delegates at the conference.

Homicide rate went up faster after he banned handguns, and gun crime went up at a faster rate until 2003. Very restrict Gun laws started to come in the to the uk in the 60s and from then to the turn of the century crime, violent crime and homicides went up as gun laws got stricter and firearm ownership massively decreased. Guns can be used to commit crimes and atrocities but they can be used to stop and even prevent them. Criminals will be more hesitant to attack someone or be a joke invader if the potential victim is legally allowed to have a gun and they are likely to.

Too many students going to university and even then a lot not putting all the effort in, so tuition fees are good way to motivate people, keep numbers down and allow a fair system to the Taxpayer. This is coming from a graduate and staunch Labour voter, it would've been inevitable.

"Education, education, education" ... yes Tony, but what standard of education? Standards are a lot lower today than they were pre 1994 ... standards were lowered so that more young 'uns passed their exams and government's set "targets" were met ..

So be it. At least with that they are able to get a degree and be able to help the country in the fields of work that needs filling. One colossal mistake however was introducing tuition fees by the same guy.

    • @tig3662
      @tig3662 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Standards were largely lowered by Blair and Brown. They dumbed down the educational system. And Labour will do that again if they ever get into power because as a party they do not believe in high expecations and standards. They let schools become too soft on people that lead to poor discipline. Britian has actually climbed on on intentional educational rankings recently -- across the broad in maths, science, and reading in the latest Pisa. This is because the Tories reformed the system and got rid of Labour's horrific polices and dumbing down.

Bikerbish yes, and there are people going to university today that are just not cut out for what they should be. 10-%20% max of the population should go to university. Most should go to trade schools. University is for thinking people to explore ideas and build upon them. Tuition fees shouldn’t be a problem. The number of people at university is. An IQ of 115 min with strong work ethic but really 120-125 is needed and that’s 10-20% of the country. The same reason we can’t send half the population to the Olympics. They’re, by definition, elite events that only the best can benefit from.

''Education, education, education''.... Blair's education reforms dumbed down the educational system and made Britain far lower on educational rankings. A decade of low expecations and poor discipline in schools thanks New Labour. Britain was only just recovered and now after the Tory educational reforms jumped up across the board in Pisa 2018 for maths, reading, and science. Standards are rising in schools now but thanks to Blair rapidly declined for a good decade and as a result Britain declined briefly in all educational rankings, because Labour had low expecations and poor discipline policies. Kids taught under Blair (I was sadly one of them) came the bottom of the developed nations for educational skills in one ranking a few years ago. Says a lot doesn't it? It has taken us a decade to get over Labour's horrific educational policies -- thankfully we are starting to see improvements due to Tory policies. Our schools should have strict discipline and high standards.
