    I’m surprised they didn’t acknowledge that Matthias Wandel designed the original pantorouter and that he sells plans to build one much more affordably from wood.

      The aluminium version is licensed from Matthias, not sure if its a one time deal or a cut, but they have a good relation, Matthias did some design work recently to make additional addons for the aluminium version

      Well, Companies (when are use inventors); they don't tell the inventor. For, they are scared the inventor; will want the buyer, to sell his! And I believe, Matthias would do it. (Not Sure)

    Not a single word about Matthias Wandel, man who designed and made the 1st ever pantorouter out of wood. He even sells plans for it and has step by step videos on how to build it.

      Matthais actually worked with PantoRouter to help them develop the tool. No one is trying to cover up his significant contributions. www.pantorouter.com/about

    Built mine years ago, and it's my most used tool still to this day. It costs less that the Festool Domino mortiser, and makes better Domino slots. As well as everything else.

    I love how this fast tracks mortise and tenon joinery, no buying biscuits or dowels, not to mention the endless other things that could be done, even half blind dovetails could be expedited with this.

    I will put in my two cents here. This is a very high quality machine with great people behind it. The improvements made to it are also worthy of attention. I like that there is nothing digital about it which makes its simple operation open to a lot of different ways of using it etc. With custom jigs for unique wood challenges it goes beyond the mortise and tenon which it does very well. Maybe the most appreciated aspect for me is the intuitive nature of setting up a part and its cut with whatever I end up noting on the wood itself, then, matching it to the router and cutter. If the machine relied more on settings then it wouldn't feel as intuitive. The Domino is also great but it has many more limitations and can sometimes feel less intuitive but again it is quite good on large sheet goods but not so much for furniture parts. The Panto in my shop will probably continue to evolve along with various jigs and custom applications.

      If I recall correctly, Matthias built his own panto-router long before they offered to give him one. For the kinds of easily repeatable joinery he likes, it's a great tool. Not everyone wants to knock out a sturdy cabinet or shelving system with a zillion mortised joints in an afternoon. But if you do, it's well worth considering either the money to buy one or the time to build one.

    Have I just not been paying attention, but when did Woodsmith and PW merge?

      @popularwoodworking  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Woodsmith's parent company purchased Popular Woodworking in 2019. We're still separate publications but we share a lot of resources. We'll be moving into a new, independent shop in 2023 so be sure and check out the updates on that as we get underway.

    An interesting tool but at $1400 I'm not sure of the cost effectiveness. Probably OK for a shop doing production work. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

    • @FearsomeWarrior
      @FearsomeWarrior 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think 1400 is about right. Considering how much you can spend or have spent on everything else in a workshop. Depends on what you’re making but any domino or joinery tools cost about as much and are less flexible. I get the cost/use relation but it’s a drop in the bucket even if you’re frugal.

      You can make them from wood. :)
      They are worth it. I mean, the production model is great, but it is pricey. But once you take into consideration the price of extruded slotted aluminum alone, it starts to become more understandable.
      People spend more than this on silly Domino mortisers. (And they don't do them as good as the pantorouter.)

    Great machine, I hope China makes one and puts them out of business. The people who sell it are jerks beyond belief. If you get defective parts like I did you play hell getting replacements. It took me 8 months to get replacement parts. And ever since then. they cancel my accessory purchases still.

  • @RonSnayberger

    Big cost and a lot of work. I think there are easier ways to make mortise and tenon joinery, dovetail joinery, etc.

    • @carterscustomrods
      @carterscustomrods 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I made mine years ago, and it's so much more than that. Every form of joinery can be done with this, and with extreme precision.

    • @displaychicken
      @displaychicken 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Absolutely. Of course there are far cheaper ways to make these joints.
      As far as work? The pantorouter is far faster and easier than any other method I have ever used or seen. It also has accuracy to within a few thousands of an inch, which is difficult to replicate.
      Did I mention it’s insanely fast?
      It’s an absolutely perfect machine and it is so intuitive to use. It also lends itself to a lot of creativity, and the owners/community are only starting to scratch the surface of what this thing can do.

    My PantoRouter sits in the box in the corner of my garage just collecting dust, no Router to fit in Australia. it went from $2300 dollar by the time it was delivered to my home $5000 dollars later useless

      Bosch and others have routers for your AUS power - soft-start too. I built a rolling stand for mine including a place for s centrifugal dust separator. Set it up and play with it. You should find endless uses and pleasure from it. I can run mine on a generator when the power is frequently out in CA, too.
