the problem with your first counter is the elbow is free on the other side,I agree that wrestling can equal MT for head control and wrestling has been my second sport to,what a lot of people dont realise is MT has underhooks, overhooks, bicep control etc the same as in wrestling,of course it also has knees/elbows from the clinch.Best of luck with your training Jarrod :)

Hi Jarrod, firstly thanks for not taking my comment in a negative way:) Ive practiced and taught Muay Thai for 31 years in my country and many times in Thailand,I have been lucky enough to train with and learn from some of the best Nak Muay in Thailand,

namphon, thank you for your input, and you are right about there being many great counters in Muay Thai! The beauty of that variety is that everyone can experiment and find what works for them. The first counter I learned from a coach who trained in Phucket for a couple years, and the second one is a modified wrestling shuck, and I think wrestling may be the only style that rivals MT for head control. I've had success with them, & I hope you decide to give them another try. Thanks again :)

It's better to lose to the best than hang around beating the bottom rung. I enjoyed our discussion, if you are ever in the Denver area please look us up!

Thank you for your input, it sounds as if you have benefited from some terrific training opportunities. I suspect you have worked with a different level of MT fighters than what is common in the US. The counters shown here have all worked repeatedly in MMA scenarios against skilled opponents, I don't doubt that high-level MT in Thailand is a whole other game.

Hi Jarrod, yes I have been lucky to stand in front of the best,I didnt stand for to long however as they are so skilled with throws/off balancing that I often feel like Im superman flying through the air lol,To be honest Jarrod I havent seen anyone real good at clinch(Thai style) in MMA/UFC yet though Im sure it will happen one day, thank you brother :)

Sir with respect none of these counters other than the upp/hook would work in the Muay Thai ring against a good clincher, far better to do as the Thais do..turtle the shoulders and neck so there is less gap for the hands to get the neck then lie kaen which is to use the forearms to block the grab..then use liam or turn the opponent of balance with the hands on his bicep and head,so many great counters in Muay Thai.:)
