I love this song and Let's Talk About Your Hair. To me, Let's Talk About Your Hair talks about a relationship on the brink of dying. Both of them know it's doomed and it's so awkward and painful to talk to each other the only thing they can do anymore to communicate is make small talk about the persons hair because they don't want to face the fact the relationship isn't going anywhere and that it's damaged beyond repair so it's best to move on, he knows that they don't really care anymore and that they no longer love them and question when they stopped possibly implying if they ever did. When he asks about the man in their dreams and asking if it's him, he's still holding onto some hope there's even the smallest chance to save the relationship. In Cigarettes and Old Perfume he's reminiscing about the times he spent with them, he calls to let them know he's okay and that despite how much he misses them he knows it's better off that they're not together. When he talks about how they never found their way back, it sounds like he's talking about how this person has changed and the person he fell in love with is simply no longer there, and despite all that he still wants to be with this person because he still has feelings for them and hope they'll get back together even though he's accepting it's not a possibility, and when asking if they think of him by listening to the pain in his voice it's like you can almost tell he's desperate to hear yes even if it's not true. It's not just the lyrics that speak to me though, it's the raw emotion, the cracks, and the pain in his voice that really brings the verses and chorus to life. I feel like you can really tell the singer is wearing his heart on his sleeve when he's singing this, the emotions he's feeling and the way he shows them in the songs is so powerful that you can almost feel it if you've been there and even be able to imagine it if you haven't. I'm not 100% sure but that's the picture that's painted for me when I hear these two songs and I kinda wonder if others who listen to these two songs have the same picture painted as well.
