- The incredible and one of a kind Baritone Sax phenom LEO P. performing the "Underground Theme" from Super Mario Land for the Gameboy (1989) originally composed by the great Hirokazu Tanaka.
I was heavily inspired by Leo's incredibly unique approach to his horn, and wanted to draw some vocabulary from Arabic classical legendary artists such as Umm Kulthum while letting him rock out with his unique sound on the melody (while throwing in some love for Camille Saint-Saens towards the end in the process!) Hope you enjoy :)

Blending together timeless musical themes from Nintendo, Sega, Sony, and more then re-arranging them in genres and styles of all musical inspirations, The 8-Bit Big Band has members from all around the world, but most reside primarily in New York City, and are some of the most highly sought after musicians and performers.

In the early 50s, Harry Carney held a note for 45 minutes on baritone saxophone. It was aNew Years Eve gig with the Ellington Band. Carney was known during his lifetime and today for being able to play incredibly long lines for long periiods of time while circular breathigng on a low A Conn bari that has a bigger bore than the YBS 52 (Intermediate bari) that Leo P is playing here. If you want to hear really great baritone saxophone, start with Harry Carney. He is the granddad of the bari sax. Listen to his playing of "Sophisticate Lady" if you really want to hear great baritone saxophone.

Leo P. is a bad man! Check out his solo in this video. What he does with a baritone saxophone is incredibly difficult and he makes it look simple. Not to mention how he dances around a lot while playing and that saxophone weighs in at at least 40 lbs.

There'll be no other ensemble/orchestra quite like Big Band, such unique remix take on video games, so authentic feeling, and blows me away with every single composition they make, and this is no exception. With every composition they publish I just have to stop everything I'm doing and absorb what I'm listening to, it's just that beautiful personally. Wish Nintendo would hire them for their musical skills, absolutely incredible

I just love the enthusiasm Leo brings to this piece, like you can see he's really having fun.
Here I wondered how they were going to translate a three second underground loop into a whole piece but surprised to hear it's a beautiful improv thing around the "Egyptian" levels instead. 😄

This is one of my all-time favorites by this band, although that's probably because jazz metal has always and will always be my favorite thing in the world. Painfully underrated

Yeah "big band" is a funny term because it's both a genre and also just a description of musical instrumentation, in our band it usually just falls into the latter which just means: Big Band = an ensemble that has 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, 5 saxes, rhythm section and sometimes strings/other orchestral stuff
