He also fought in the Marshall Islands campaign. That's where he saw the majority of his combat. He was badly wounded on Saipan in the opening days of that campaign. RIP PFC Lee Marvin, USMC. You still have many, many fans.

Listening to Lee Marvin and Broderick ('Highway Patrol') Crawford's voices; I'd say they were the inspiration for 'Officer McGruff'.

*This is the infamous "dirty cop" episode.* But since the CPD officer was exonerated, I don't see why Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley was so upset with this episode. Perhaps he thought the series gave Chicago, and the CPD in particular, a bad rap. For example, in this episode Maxwell accused the department of protecting bad cops, and Ballinger was pretty rough with Cook at the TV studio.
M Squad's documentary style led some viewers to believe that they were watching actual CPD personnel. During the show's three year run, the CPD had to deal with calls from people wanting to speak to Lt. Ballinger or asking why the CPD hadn't solved this or that crime when Lt. Ballinger did it so quickly.
*The Chicago Tribune printed the following letter from a viewer in its March 1, 1958 issue:* _I would like to know if Lt. Lee Marvin of M Squad is really Frank Ballinger of the Chicago police force or just an actor._
*The Tribune replied as follows:* _Lee Marvin, who plays Lt. Ballinger, is not a policeman and there is no such officer on the Chicago force. in fact, (Police) Commissioner Timothy O'Connor has refused to give his approval to the series or to "any other show that dramatizes 99 per cent crime and 1 per cent solution." This approach to the problem of big city crime encourages misguided youngsters to go astray, says the commissioner._
*Nothing had changed by July 1958, when the Tribune reported that* _"Producer Lee Marvin, who is tying up traffic around town with chase scenes for M Squad, his cops and robbers TV show, is doing so without cooperation from City Hall. Commissioner Tim O'Connor still won't sanction fictional video based on departmental fact, as do other cities. Maybe it would be smart public relations to show our police dept. in a good light about now?_

As a son of Native Chicagoans who were in the newspaper trades in the '30s, I have the sense that John Larkin committed what was refered to in Olde Chicagoense as ''A Breach of Da Clout'' [or insufficient bribery.] Meaning he didn't grease the right palms in pre-production. A smart locations guy should have fixed it, but it never happened due to reasons lost to history.
Maybe Latimer Productions didn't have the budget to let the entire outfit on its back, so they resorted to a Cinema Verite style of running and gunning, -- apache-scene grabbing.-- exterior shots as necessary and patching the rest together in LA. Chicago alleys and fire escapes were never as sunny and clean as the one the Chantueses' BF climbs down. Even if she did live at the Drake, as the exterior suggests.
Excellent episode. Still Noir, but classic TV.
NYC has the opposite philosophy with ''The Naked City'' a contemporary cop show that showed a more humanistic light on New Yorkers despite thier foibles.
      Thanks for digging this up.

Thanks for the updated info on the posted episode. I also wondered why the mayor would think this gave the Chicago PD a black eye. Maybe he couldn't stomach any doubt of the department's integrity.

In 1956-57 several Chicago cops were busted for corruption and participating in crimes. Daley banned all filming in Chicago after that. A friend's grandfather was the person that got Daley into politics.

Crime show in competition with Peter Gunn at the time. Both shows had music interludes, but in this show the combo music was faked. In Peter Gunn, the musicians actually played live.
